New fitness equipment installed at Jess Martin Park

County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation and the Community of Julian recently celebrated the official opening of the new fitness and recreation areas at Jess Martin Park.

The new improvements include a nine-station fitness area, community exercise path, a permanent restroom building, shade structure, picnic tables, barbeque grills, rock retaining walls and footbridges.

The park improvements were developed and implemented with the community in mind. Department of Parks and Recreation staff worked with the Jess Martin Park Advisory Committee during the design of the project.  The advisory committee gave valuable insight into how the improvements could best serve the community.

The improvements at Jess Martin Park are a great example of how parks can make life better.

Featured Park: Sycamore Canyon Goodan Ranch Preserve

Sycamore Canyon consists of 2,272 acres of coastal sage scrub and chaparral-covered hills including the 325-acre Goodan Ranch, a mix of grassland, riparian, coastal sage, oak woodland and mixed chaparral.  More than 10 miles of trails lead to grand vistas, abundant wildlife and interesting reminders of the history of human use of the area.

The Preserve includes the Goodan Ranch Center which was built next to the original ranch house that was burned in the 2003 Cedar Fire. It houses a multipurpose demonstration room, exhibit room, staff office, and support spaces. This project is designed for low site impact and high energy efficiency (LEED certified). Goodan Ranch is jointly owned by San Diego County, the Cities of Poway and Santee, and the CA State Fish & Game Department. The project’s focus is to stress the value of the region's natural and cultural resources while respecting the pristine natural setting of the preserve's ecologies. A seasonal creek bed lies within the site.  Other site features include an outdoor amphitheater, a horse trough and hitching post. Programs and hikes are offered year-round.

A Message from SDG&E

SDG&E LogoUnderstanding you summer energy bills

When hot weather arrives, your energy bills may increase, especially if you use air conditioning. Understanding seasonal changes in your energy bills can help you manage your energy use to keep bills down. Here are three basics to keep in mind.

1. Summer baseline allowances apply from May 1 to Oct. 31. Every six months, your baseline allowances for both natural gas and electricity switch between winter and summer levels. These daily allowances provide you with certain numbers of therms and kilowatt-hours for basic needs at the lowest, or baseline, rates. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) sets baseline allowances according to the season, your climate zone, the number of days in the billing period and other factors.

2. The more electricity you use, the higher your tiered electric rates go. The CPUC established a tiered rate system for electricity in 2001. Your baseline allowance for electricity is tier one of SDG&E’s four rate tiers, and corresponds to the lowest rate per kilowatt-hour. When you use more than the baseline allowance, your electric rates go up progressively. You’ll see the greatest increase in how much you pay in tiers three and four.

3. Total standard electric rates are slightly higher for summer than winter in tiers two, three and four. Your tier one (baseline) electric rate is the same all year round, but the summer rate is slightly higher than the winter rate for each succeeding tier.

To see how much of a difference increased energy use can make in your bill, visit sdge.com/rates, click on “Understanding your baseline allowance for electricity,” and try the baseline calculator.
