Sep. 20, 2011 - The Well's Not Dry!

And, as a matter of fact, even here in this ‘ole desert, right now, we have plenty of water for drinking, bathing and watering the many plants on my 5 acres of paradise! Recently we have had visits from a Gila Monster and a Horny Toad who look to be thriving as well. How blessed I am to get to hang out here in this corner of the world. Life is good!

I am reading Nancy E. Turner's book,Sarah's Quilt, set in 1906 documenting life on a Southern Arizona ranch. Click here to read more and the rest of CoachJoeann's Tuesday Tips....

Aug. 10, 2011 - Are You Having Fun Yet?

August's Best Business Tip

HAVE FUN!

Yep, I know it is stressful and challenging in real estate these days. But, you know, no matter what the markets bring, there are always those who find the difficulties and get stuck focusing on them. What you put your attention on EXPANDS! Always!

There are also those, that no matter what the difficulties, are able to focus on what the opportunity is or how to survive and thrive as a challenge.

Perhaps you, like me, fall in to both of these categories some times. The trick, I have found, is to remember I can always choose my attitude, even if I can not choose my circumstances -- and it always feels better to have fun and be happy.

So, if you want more business, start having more fun. People like to do business with happy people. Start by being grateful for what you do have. Pay a little more attention to it. Notice what is ok. Laugh.

I was impressed when I was in Juarez, Peru with CARE how happy the people we met were. They had very little. They were living on less than $50 a month, some of them. But they grew their plants or raised their guinea pigs and smiled and were grateful.
When we are happy; when we are having fun, the world responds with delightful surprises. REALLY! Try for a week to double the amount of fun you are having and then let me know how much more business shows up, ok?

Borrowed Wisdom

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude."
- Maya Angelou

"Each of us literally chooses, by his way of attending to things, what sort of universe he shall appear to himself to inhabit."
- William James

"It isn't the things that happen to us in our lives that cause us to suffer, it's how we relate to the things that happen to us that causes us to suffer."- Pema Chodron
"The basic thing is that everyone wants happiness, no one wants suffering. And happiness mainly comes from our own attitude, rather than from external factors. If your own mental attitude is correct, even if you remain in a hostile atmosphere, you feel happy."

- Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama

Apr. 30, 2010 - Who Are You Hanging Out With?

Last week was a fantastic week of connecting with amazing women. For three wonderful days, I attended Bernice Ross’s Awesome Females in Real Estate (AFIRE) conference in Scottsdale and then my friend and national trainer extraordinaire, Amy Chorew, came for the weekend! I am so grateful and fortunate to have such inspirational women in my life. I believe it is important to surround yourself with people who elicit the best from you, who energize you and who model what you want to evolve into!

Here’s some of what I learned this week:

  • @KellyWhite CFO of www.GoodLifeTeam.com shared their progressive company’s “Constellation” strategy for social media, which ties all the activity into a focused, comprehensive plan that systematically leverages everything they do. Their innovative support for agents was fascinating and is destined to continue to help them capture a large share of business from the internet and building relationships through their social media. They have truly invented a model that is the brokerage of the future.
  • @TerriMurphy of shared how her company is helping people with reputation management and shared how negative social media posts can be buried by flooding the channel with positive posts.
  • Bernice Ross (@BRoss) said “remember what your mother always told you, 'If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all.'” She also told us that video testimonials are the BEST way to get higher Google rankings (who knew? Cool!)
  • Tricia Andreassen (@TriciaSings) from www.ProStepMarketing.com suggested how Press Releases and partnering with businesses (á la the Social Partnering™ that I have been sharing with you this year) are a good demographic fit and can give you more expert status, credibility and exposure.

There was lots, lots more. I’ll pull more nuggets for next week!

What did you learn this week? There are so many opportunities and now is a perfect time to be learning, expanding and networking:

  • Attend a webinar-check out what is available at no cost through RightToolsRightNOW or Women’s Council of REALTORS®
  • Go to a National Meeting! The MidYear NAR meetings in DC in May will offer lots of great networking and learning. Sign up for the National Convention in New Orleans in November.
  • Take a GRI, CRS, SRS, PMN or other designation class (even if you already have the designation, it’s a great value). Besides the current content, you’ll meet others who are serious about expanding & learning.

...or if you haven’t joined my my Facebook business side…please come play!

...or come play on FourSquare!

Tuesday’s Borrowed Wisdom

“Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand - and melting like a snowflake...”

Feb. 12, 2010 - Who Do You Hang Around?

You've heard me (and many others!) say "what you focus on expands"!

It DOES Make a difference who you spend time with!

If you surround yourself news and people who give you more evidence of how tough it is...it's easy to buy into excuses for your own lack of results. If you want to attract and create more to be positive, happy and grateful about ... your thinking and positive emotional state are the best tools you have to start with.

Is it time to upgrade your Rolodex and your experiences? Have you outgrown some of the people you hang out with? Or are the folks to spend time with each day inspiring and encouraging?

I'm not saying to abandon old friends or give up mentoring or helping others, but I am saying that careful attention to what input you let in can impact your success!  You can read more about this topic and the  lively discussion it spurred  on my Active Rain blog......

Oct. 27, 2009 - Tuesday Tips-Lotsof Resources!

Creating Miracles: Three Cups of Tea
“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”
- Mother Teresa

I love reading and being inspired by unreasonable people who have a dream and set about to make a dent in the world! Often, against all odds and logic, their taking action shifts the direction of the future. I recently finished Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. A mountain climber who went to conquer Mt. Everest, Greg has and has spent the last 15 years building schools in Pakistan. He believes educating girls is important because they can bring peace to the world. His story is amazing.

His vision is inspiring. If you’ve had some struggle in your life lately, do yourself a favor and read this book.

Choosing a vision that you are passionate about and using that energy and passion to create miracles is a great way to approach your business planning. What would you attempt if you knew you couldn’t fail? Why not attempt it anyway? New agents often do very well and try things the people who “know” how it works are skeptical of because they are excited and have a vision. If you need a little inspiration along these lines, watch The Dream Movie. And then, start with a vision for next year that YOU are inspired by. Let go of the “how” to get there. Be very clear in the end result. And, then go to work utilizing every crazy idea and resource that appears! Believe me, it will be a very, very good year!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens
can change the world;
indeed it's the only thing that ever has.”

- Margaret Mead (1901-1978), American Anthropologist

Take Action Today!

I believe that my readers are pro-active people who take ACTION to create the lives they truly want. They INVEST in themselves and expect great results, so I want to invite you to make this coming year your best year ever. I will be giving you opportunities with every weekly Tips! Commit to take action to create an awesome 2010 by surrounding yourself with the people and resources (and books!) you need to achieve a life of ultimate success, in every sense of the word. If we each envision and create the lives of our dreams, we are making the world a better place! It IS up to you!

Borrowed Wisdom

"If you don't control what you think, you can't control what you do.
Think first and act afterward."

- Napoleon Hill

Free Think And Grow Rich

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill has been responsible for more self-made success stories than any book I know. It’s the best description of success techniques, the best description of the success mindset, and the best description of setting (and achieving) goals I’ve ever seen. Much of today’s Law of Attraction work is just another spin on the sound advice from this book. My friend, Vic Johnson, is currently giving away 1 Million copies! How cool is that?

Planning for 2010

Are you ready to hit the ground running for your best year ever in 2010? I love consciously creating the coming year in the Fall. I start with the trips and vacations (we are going to spend June of 2010 in Hawaii) and then fill in the rest. I am a recovering control freak…so the visioning part…creating what I want is something I just love! I’d have some ways that we can do this together so you can get more of what you really want in 2010? Are you ready?

Three Ways to Play…One for every Budget:

  1. The $12 Solution - My 34-page 2010 Awesome Year Business Plan has been tweaked and is ready for you to use to get ready for next year. This may be the best investment you make today! Order for yourself…or if you are a manager, this is a cool tool to use with your agents, or as a gift for your real estate clients, if you are an affiliate. I have quantity discounts or only $97 for unlimited use!
  2. The $57 Solution - A 3-session 2010 REALLY SIMPLE Business PlanningTeleConference, using the Awesome Year Plan, that will include masterminding and coaching. December 3, 10 & 17
  3. The You Deserve IT! $1900 Solution- A Full-Day Business Makeover! I have a limited number of days available in the next 3 months to come to you and/or your team or office for a whole day of personalized and customized strategizing and planning.

Borrowed Wisdom
Living Well!

My wonderful husband, Bub Fossland says,”If you’re not enjoying yourself, you’re doing it wrong.

One day I misquoted him and said,”If you aren’t having fun, you’re doing it wrong.” Which, by the way, I do espouse!

But, Bub corrected me, explaining that his quote was about liking oneself. Methinks, this is a very good idea too.

That’s Bub with Jean Baker, his 88 year old Mom on his 65th birthday a few weeks ago!

Read this blog post by Jay White, AKA Dumb Little Man, for 39 other good ideas on living well.

Tech & Social Media

The National Association of Realtors® has been surveying members to find out about their use of technology like websites and blogs for several years. Now, Research, too, has its very own Facebook group, Active Rain and RealTown presences, as well as a presence on Twitter and LinkedIn. Research's social media pages are not only a place for our members to receive insight into our latest surveys, commentaries and reports, but also an avenue for you to make your thoughts known to us and your fellow Realtors®. There may be certain special trends in the marketplace that Research may be unaware of - such as a significant rise in foot traffic at open houses or continuing long delays in getting short sales to close. They'd like this to be an open forum for discussion rather than a one-sided monologue.

Apr. 28, 2009 - Getting What You Expect!

Getting What You Expect!

How do you start your day? Which side of the bed do you get up on??? You know…is it the right side? OR????? Try this simple technique to set your intentions and expectations for the day and give yourself a really great place to start from. Do you realize how much power you possess about what happens each day? It amazes me when I stay conscious to it, instead of rolling out of bed and seeing what happens. Start the day with gratitude that you woke in a nice warm bed and saying to yourself: “It’s going to be a wonderful day.” This sets up a nice filter through which the events of the day will come through. Try this for a week and see how those days are different (or not) from days as usual.

I’ve been enjoying some weekly audio interviews that Speaker, Healer, Author, Jennifer McLean offers. Last week she interviewed Dr. Judith Orloff who has a new book, Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life, and shared some wonderful tips on staying away from the negative. One theme she shared was to look at EVERY single experience as a growth opportunity and to be aware of what that situation is teaching you. In my coaching training, I have found the stuckness that occurs for many clients is not learning anything from a previous lesson and getting to revisit the same situation in different clothing, over and over and over. By becoming more aware and LEARNING the lesson, you can evolve and move to the next place. I loved the quote from the Dalai Lama who said, ”When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

Coach’s Tip:

  1. Start your day with an intention that it be wonderful and then look for evidence all that that it IS!
  2. Examine if there are places you are stuck that you could recontexualize the meaning you have attached to the circumstances, and accept the lesson that is there to help you grow.

How Smart Are You???
Now is the time to get more educated!

As we experience the natural cycles of real estate, making time to raise our standards and knowledge to the next level can place us in a strong position for the future. Apr. 21, 2009 - Volunteers

Volunteers
As I watered my garden this morning, I saw several volunteers that I hadn’t planted but that had taken root. I have a compost in the garden and some little seeds and a potato had decided they liked the environment. I moved them to a better place with more sunlight and have some brand new plants that are going to yield goodies for me. Gardening has so many good metaphors for doing business in a “green” way, in tune with the natural (and attractive) ways of nurturing “seedlings.”
Spring comes early to Tucson, of course. We are actually expecting 100 degree temperatures this week, so I planted many seeds about a month ago. My tomato plants are 3 feet high and loaded with ping pong sized tomatoes. I also have loads of wildflowers that I intend to harvest seeds from once they have flowered. It is so satisfying to plant these seeds, and them water and see the results in the future.
But back to the volunteers…… I am not sure a potato plant will thrive in Tucson, but I am going to give it lots of water and see what happens. I also have a couple of tomato plant volunteers. Much of my garden is kinda unstructured, wild and unplanned. I doubt that surprises you given my style. I tend to plant stuff here and there and then see where it thriv es. Since my personality isn’t given to lots of structure, so this fits for me….going with my strengths!
Because of this, I am constantly surprised with my harvest and the volunteers are my favorites. They have started to grow on their own. Now, it just takes nurturing and they will turn into a nice harvest. The analogy for me while I was watering was understanding that there were lots of volunteers or additions to my garden that had shown up but were not going to flourish unless I nurtured them.
In my business life, I find, there are volunteers all around me. I try so hard, sometimes, to prove my self-sufficiency not seeing I am surrounded by wonderful people all around me who can help; who would love to grow in my garden; who could add something unexpected and extra to my life. How often have I tried to do it all myself, instead of looking for the volunteers? In my experience with Women’s Council of REALTORS® (WCR), I often see Presidents try too hard to get it right and instead of letting go and trusting that the volunteers will bring something surprising and unexpected. When I take my eye off perfection and allow the natural flow and abundance take me in a little different direction, my results expand and there’s usually lots more fun and collaboration.
Where are the volunteers in your life? Have you been ignoring the opportunity to find clients that are unexpected because you didn’t plant them? Or you didn’t plant them or expect them there? I bet you also have volunteers all around you that would love to give you business if you’d give them water and attention.
Are you doing things YOUR way, using your strengths instead of trying to find a magic pill outside yourself? Are you assiduously planting the seeds for the future AFTER you close that deal to ensure that there will be a future harvest, remembering to drip on those seeds, even if it is going to be another season for harvest?
This week, look for the volunteers. Water them. Ask them to lunch! Have fun with the process and smell the flowers!
