It's time for me to get a new camera and I'm considering one of the two above. I need something that will take great wide angle shots for real estate and also takes great clear close up shots. Video, panorama, etc. which seems to be standard on most cameras would also be nice.

I have a Kodak that takes decent wide angle shots but I use a really OLD Sony (DSC P3) for close up. It's pretty clunky but takes surprisingly great close ups and night shots. I would prefer not to lug around a heavy camera (I used to have a Nikon that was cumbersome) which is why these two appear to be possible choices.

Currently Costco has a nice bundle and deal with $300 off:
Nikon 1 J1 Compact System Camera Lens 2 Bundle

I also like Sony a lot:
Sony Alpha NEX

I appreciate any comments or recommendations. Mahalo!

Both the Nikon 1J1 and the Sony Alpha Nex-5 are using a wide angle zoom 27-81mm equivalent in 35mm format.
That number 27mm is not enough wide for Real Estate, I think.
The minimum wide I would recommend is 24mm equivalent in 35mm format and that is what you will find in the Sony Alpha Nex-6.
That Sony NEX-6 has a wide zoom of 16-50mm lens and the NEX-5 has a wide 18-55mm.
I also like the HDR option in the Sony. Just read about the option: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666488065#features

Thanks Ronny. I agree re: 24mm which is that I currently have. I would like at least 24mm or wider.

Since the Nikon 1 bundle comes with 2 lenses (10-30mm VR Lens, 30-110mm VR Lens) would this cover that I am looking for?

Here is the answer from Nikon itself.

Specifications:

  • Effective Pixels: 10.1 MP 13.2mm x 8.8mm Sensor
  • Lens Specifications: 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 Interchangeable Lens (3x optical zoom / 27-81mm equivalent in 35mm format) AND 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 Interchangeable Lens (3.7x optical zoom / 81-297mm equivalent in 35mm format)

Bold highlight tells us that the widest zoom is also 27mm and not the needed 24mm.
Sorry.
