REALTORS Welcome Home Parker Family of Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nov. 12, 2007 - Patty Parker is Las Vegas’s newest homeowner, thanks to the National Assn. of REALTORS® and Habitat for Humanity. NAR presented the keys to a new Habitat for Humanity house to Parker and her two daughters during a dedication ceremony yesterday.
The ceremony preceded the 2007 REALTORS® Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, November 13–16. A record 30,000 REALTORS® and guests are expected to attend the annual meeting.
Parker and her daughters, Jasmyn, 14, and Kassidy, 12, were joined by REALTOR® leaders and volunteers at the dedication for the one-story, three-bedroom home at 1933 Gregory Street.
“REALTORS® build communities and care about the lack of affordable housing opportunities for families in Las Vegas and throughout the country,” said Pat V. Combs, NAR president from Grand Rapids, MI, and vice president of Coldwell Banker-AJS-Schmidt. “Today we celebrate the combined efforts of the Parker family, REALTORS® and Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas toward improving the city’s critical housing needs and helping Patty and her family achieve their dreams of homeownership.”
Parker has lived in Las Vegas for more than a decade and works at a local hospital. She personally contributed more than 250 hours of “sweat equity,” helping build Habitat houses for other local families before construction of her own home began. Her daughters, Jasmyn and Kassidy, contributed to their new home by earning credit hours for their good grades in school.
“I am so excited and proud to have a permanent place for my family to call home,” Parker said. “The girls are most excited to have their own bedrooms after sharing a room for so many years.”
This is the seventh year that NAR has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build a home in the city hosting its annual conference. REALTORS® have also contributed to Habitat for Humanity’s homebuilding efforts abroad and along the Gulf Coast.
Following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, NAR and its state and local REALTOR® associations raised more than $4 million to build 54 homes in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Working with Habitat, teams of Realtor® volunteers from across the country are still volunteering their time and skills to help build these houses; construction will continue through 2008.
The Greater Las Vegas Assn. of REALTORS® is also sponsoring another Habitat for Humanity home on Gregory Street. REALTORS® and other volunteers will complete construction on that home later this year.
The 2007 REALTORS® Conference & Expo, titled “No Limits,” takes place at the Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino, Nov. 13–16, in Las Vegas. The meeting will feature more than 200 conference sessions and 744 exhibitors.
Established in Clark County, Nev., in 1991, Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas has completed 61 homes. Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas is a not-for-profit organization that builds decent, affordable housing with the help of volunteer labor and donated time and materials and funds. Each home is sold at no profit and with a no-interest mortgage to local working families who otherwise might be forced to live in substandard housing. These families contribute “sweat equity” by helping in the construction of their own homes. For more information, visit www.habitatlasvegas.org.
