I was appaled at the price just to drive around a park to look at Christmas lights.  I haven't lived in California that long and this is another disgusting, money grubbing, pathetic attempt at highway robery.  After a long road trip back home from visiting family, we saw the lights from the road and though a neighborhood had joyfully gathered together to display the lights.  Needless to say we were shocked when we found out that it was actually a park that was charging an arm and a leg to look at the lights!

What, do you get a gift bag or something?  Is there a tour guide?  How about a back massage for that price!  Then I saw a radio station had their name slapped all over the place.  Who was making money off of this disgrace?

5 bucks is still pushing it but I probably would have payed that, but 15 *&^# dollars!!!!  Thats just insane!!!

And the most sad part of it all was that there were people actually paying money and going into it!!!!  What is our human race comming to when there are idiot lemmings who pay for this outragous price just to look at some pretty Christmas lights!  It's more like a "Bah Humbug" and a slap to the face.

Lame....

The annual Fantasy of Lights at Vasona Lake County Park is put on by the Santa Clara County Parks Department. This year, 2008, marked the 10th anniversary of this very, very popular event.  Putting the show together each year is not a small undertaking, and the funds raised from the show are a huge help to this strapped governmental entity.

The show runs each year for about a month. The charge is per car and it's less earlier in December (when the demand is lower) than later in the month (when demand is higher). The show is mostly available by car, but the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad goes by many of them, and that makes for a special train ride for kids and adults too.

SInce you have raised the issue of cost, I'll try to see how much the parks department raises from this event  each year.

Nice display but how about discount for seniors. I bring a car load of seniors to enjoy and no discount for the older crowd. People get in back of you and want to faster and our car can't totally take the lights in and what they stand for. Maybe better supervision along the way. People with flashlight helping move the crowd around and helping out if needed. Love the whole concept but better maintaining of the tour and price.

We went to see the lights for the first time and it was fantastic! Much better than any "Christmas tree/candy cane Lanes" out there. Other than the rude people who thought we didn't turn our lights off, it was a great ride.

Our Chevy Suburban has lights which stay on while the car is on and cannot be turned off; (when we turn the actual headlights on, more lights turn on). About half a dozen people angrily yelled at us to turn our lights off, thinking it was possible to turn them off. A statement in the advertising such as "ride in a car with headlights which can be completely turned off" would be helpful. Next year we will drive in a different car.

So...there's a bike trail that runs through the park...would we be able to bike in and see some of the lights that way, or do they have the bike path blocked off somehow so they can charge?

beautiful display of lights in a nice community.  although for some, the price is too high, its only worth going if u live near by unless you are willing to visit and experience it for the first time.

 Dear Suburban owner,

It was at the festival of lights that I got out my handy dandy owners manuel and learned that yes, the Chevy Suburban lights CAN be turned off. It was mid way and to my humiliation lots of people yelling that I finally found the page. It would be appreciated to have informed tellers give instructions on how to turn off your lights....Like they do at oil changers, you know they tell you how to turn off your "change oil light".  And yes, there should be a stop for hot coco and popcorn, $10 is a bit of an overcharge considering the traffic that is brought from the event. Money, hand over fist.

If you have a car were the headlights come on when you turn the engine on, then you can disable the lights by pushing the emergancy brakes just a little bit ( not all the way) It will not hurt your brakes and car will do just fine with them off.

The lights are a wonderful display, this helps raise money for the parks department (yes, it costs money to run the park), and really, you, your honey, and your 3 kids all get to enjoy this for $10-$15.   As to Christmas in the Park, it is also a great event.  We always go to both.

Anne,

Sorry for my slow response to your question - I was out of town at the National Association of Realtors annual convention in Anaheim for the last 4-5 days.

"If your a member of Santa Clara County parks, can you get in to the Festival of Lights for free?"

I don't believe that you can since this is above and beyond the normal park activities but check with the county parks department - their website is www.ParkHere.org.

Doesnt that money go to help fund the cost of the lights and also to the park itself? Im fine paying 10$ to help maintain a county park.

Amanda, I believe you're right. There are a lot of costs associated with running the lights in Vasona, keeping the park open longer etc. - it may be that this is just a break even situation, or maybe it helps support the park above that. I'm not sure, but it's a non-profit situation.

They do have to pay people to work it and the cost of electricity. If you don't like the cost stay home. No one made you pay the fee. Besides it is cheaper than a drive in movie.

I've taken my kids here the last three years and they love it.  Not too long, not too short.  I don't mind paying the $10 for a full car (mini van with 4-5 kids + 2 adults).  You get the effects glassess too that they take home to look at the xmas tree.  I probably wouldn't pay more than that.

All you out of towners that have been complaining about our local holiday lights event could just spread the word and stay home! Don't need cranky old curmudgeons ruining it for those who enjoy it and are glad to donate to the cause. Perhaps you can find something in your own area to complain about. Ho ho ho!!!

I just read the first comment and was saddened at the person's perspective.

I think that the fact that Vasona is still willing to go through all the incredible expense and time to put together this lovely display shows their commitment to our community.

Events like these are a dying breed as costs skyrocket.  I for one will be taking our three boys to drive through and enjoy the lights.  I am happy to pay the $15 bucks!  And I will make sure that our family says thank you to the many people who take the time to do this!

Merry Christmas!

By saying "your member of Santa Clara" Did you mean to ask if " you are a member " or is it "your" as in belonging to eg "your house?"  Use proper English people. This is a public forum.

I also think that the first persons comment is a huge shame.  I took my three year old last night and she was so excited she said that she wanted to cry.  I would have paid a million dollars to take her through that park again.  She loved it.  Some people need to just stop and enjoy life.

p.s.

$12 for a 90min. movie? how about that!

I looked up your website to see what time the event begins and ends and was HORRIFIED to see the increase in prices to see the displays paid by the companies anyway.  We already pay for parks and recreation.  I understand electricity and manpower costs but the companies must pay this anyway to show their displays.

I won't recommend other people to go see the event this year.  I had planned on taking a few cars loads as it was my last year here.  Sorry to see this.

for all the people who are complaining and saying they would rather go to christmas in the park BECAUSE IT IS FREE! maybe you should rethink that. you pay 15$ dollars for fantasty of lights and thats it, but at christmas in the park most people have to pay about 7$ for parking. walk in the freezing cold about 4 blocks from where you parked then if you have children most likely your child is going to want a treat like hot chocolate etc which will cost you more. you have to pay for your child to get on the rides they have there, and of course your child is going to want one of thoses toys that light up that cost around 15$ itself so is 15$ to drive through and see beautiful lights really to much? i dont think so. but i must add i would go to fantasty of lights alot more if it was 10$ instead.

i think they charge to much to get in and yes you have to pay for entertainment, and all these people saying they have expenses and have to pay people to workat vasona park, and my kid smiled and was worth a million dollars to do it again,,what ever it is,,the point is the cost, lets just say 15000 cars travel through the holiday park, which is a under estimated,15000 cars X 15.00 equals 225,000.it does not cost that much to run this place for the entire holiday,in the past years i havent seen hardly any new props and lights for this pace, the generators they use to run this park are either owned by the county  or donated by someone to use ,and ever if were rented still does not cost them 225,000 dollars, the county owns the land,so no rent  or leasing space  needed not much for over head except for labor but not 225,000 worth ,lets say the park was occupied buy 30000 vistitor which seem to be more likley that would mean 450,000.wow you know what that means ,that would be a profit which goes back to the county, but stiill alot of monies i`d say.oh how about 10000 customers thats 150,000 still alot and thats just averaging the 15 .00 fee not the 25.00 fee.its all fun and cool caus eyou can stay warm in your vehicle and get blnded by the head lamps that dont turn off..xmas in the park, rides alot of food physical interaction ,alot more to look at.,oh and i almost forgot its free, just got to find parking which is horrible on weekends.ice skating and downtown san jose and freezing cold ,overall id rather go to xmas in the park more but i always go to both.. in the end to each there own.........happy holidays

I take my children to the Fesitival of Lights every year! It is such a spectacular event that our family looks forward to.

If anything is appalling, its that comment below that "Scrooge" posted about having to pay $15 dollars to attend! You state that you havent lived in California long, clearly! because if you had you would know that Vasona Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the Bay Area! The upkeep on Vasona is a year round commitment. We spend pretty much all major holidays BBQing and creating memories here.

$15 is nothing compared to the amount of man hours it takes to upkeep the park, assemble the lights, display the lights, take down the lights and clean the park afterwards. If you dont want to spend $15 then dont attend but dont criticize the park or the many volunteers who have spent countless hours preparing this long time tradition!

why is everyone complaining about $10-15?? you'll spend double that in gas driving around (not to mention your time) just to see that many lights. it's a PARK, and they CHARGE all year round to go in and park/utilize it. it costs money to staff a park between 6-10pm (when it is normally closed), and the electric bill has to be through the roof, not to mention the cost of all the lights/decorations and the labor it took to assemble everything.

this is a GREAT event, and if you don't wanna pay $10 then do your own thing or brave downtown SJ for Christmas in the Park (good luck parking if you wanna get out). but don't try and take a dump on this amazing event  just because you're too cheap or grumpy. if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it all.

and to the person who was from out of town, don't get scrooge on us because you chose to go to a WONDERFUL light display in 1 of the nicest/expensive/premiere communities in the state (if not country). and if you're laid off and can't afford $15 then just drive around your neighborhood or google local neighborhoods that go out, don't whine about it as if your 3 kids are getting lumps of coal from santa and will be traumatized that they didn't get to go see the vasona lights display.

I honestly can not believe what people are saying on here and about the Vasona Park Lights.  Look people we pay 12-15 dollars per person to watch a stupid movie in the theaters and have to deal with it being packed and noisy.  It takes a lot of money I am sure to run and manage a park every year.  The electricity costs a lot of money plus to pay people to help work the events.  I am a middle class person with children and sometimes can not afford every thing I want but to get 9 family members in a car and pay 15 dollars is no problem.  And if for some reason I can not afford it then I do not go.  Its that simple!!!  We do not need to come on here and bash the park.  Its a beautiful place to spend time and super clean.  And hello Los Gatos community members are not complaining!

To Mr. Grinch - Just pack 14 kids in your car.  It is surely worth $1/ea. right?  And don't say "I don't have 14 kids"  I'm sure you have a toothless gaggle of state sponsored dependents dying to see some great Christmas lights.  Besides, all the money you've saved, because your parish in Arkansas is dry, should fund your adventure.

To the people who are complaining about this.. The first time i have went to one of these was when I went to Florida and I had fun. Kept saying that California never have cool stuff like this, and I really enjoyed it. The fee that youre paying for is the electricity basically. So calm down, dont have to be angry and write angry comments to discourage everyone. Dont go if you dont want to pay. Easy as that.

I'm so sorry that there are families that feel $15 is too much for a little entertainment with the family. You are all sitting in the car together and can actually have a conversation with one another rather than sitting in front of your $100+ Wii's and Playstations. In fact, a movie for four with candy and popcorn would cost at least $50. Look at it as cheap entertainment, a way to give back to the community rather than looking for another FREE ride, and a way to reconnect with your family. Merry Christmas!

SIGH!  I was so excited to find out information on the Festival of Lights as I plan to go this year after a lifetime of living here and not ever going.....and I see this thread..such a letdown with all the complaints about the price!  I could see that the price is a bit steep, maybe the county can do something about it.  But, in the spirit of Christmas, the experience you get from an outing like this with your loved ones is priceless.  Christmas lights for Christians have a deeper meaning - it is a symbol of the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the LIGHT OF THE WORLD!

While some of you complain about the cost, you should be grateful to have a beautiful park to use for all year round purposes. We are paying to enjoy the labor of others to put it all together for us. The fee supplements the cost of the event.

It is a free country, and noone is forcing you to pay and enjoy.  It doesn't sound like you would have enjoyed it anyway.

The only sad thing is most California's are jaded and dont even have a clue that in other parts of the country and even internationally events like this are free to the public.  Its sad that our CA governments have ruined our economy and are making it difficult for californians and americans in general to save a buck and still be able to share in the xmas spirit with our families. We as california's are paying for the mistakes our Government officials have made. I am born and raised in CA and yes I still love my state but Im not stupid and I have seen the changes over the last 30 years.

I live and work in Los Gatos and aggree that the price is way too high just to drive around and see lights.  I think it is crazy to charge that much for something for families to do at Christmas. It cheapens the tradion. Really sad : (  Especialy with the economy so bad. Money is very hard on us this year. We just went to Willow Glen instead. The lights there were beautiful and you could walk around. Oh and it was free!!!

To all of the people getting offended by people not agreeing with the price:

We are all intitled to our own opinion. I ran an event like this once and it did not cost this much. I love Vasona. A lot of memories at that park. I fully support helping raising money for it, but you have to understand and be sensitive to other people and economic situations. I am now laid off, too. I have not been to see that lights in a while and could not believe the price. And for those trying to argue a movie is more expensive. I don't go to movies. I am a single mother. I really wanted to take my son to see the lights. $15 is way too expensive.

For all those of you who are arguing that it is not expensive, then can you pay for my ticket? That would be Christmas spirit!

I just can't believe when I was reading these posts how cruel and insensitive people were being. This is America and people can say, or feel how ever they like. Try being more open minded of how others live outside of Los Gatos.

Happy Holidays.

I was born and raised in San Jose. For me the money is worth the show. If  you don't think so, don't go or fill up ur car and charge 2 a person, come on. People spend more than that at a Starbucks or MC Donald's for the kids, Make ur own chocolate and enjoy in the warmth of your car, That is so much better than fighting the traffic in down town San Jose, the parking, the cold and the rude people. Its so packed you cant even see the displays. Much less enjoying a stroll with your loved one hand and hand. Your sure to get pushed or stepped on, So good luck with that. I'm going to Vasona. Got room in my car And I wont charge!  Merry Christmas

My only beef is, if they are going to close the park for a special event, they need to update their website so the public won't bother to go.  Last night we were all excited to take the kids.  When we got there, the park was closed for a special event.  Try and explaning that to a toddler and young kids.  WE WERE SO UPSET.  Before we left to the park I had checked the website and it showed it was open.  It would have been nice if they would have updated their website to show it was closed. Needless to say, my kids were crying on the way back home :(

When you look at the commercialization of Christmas, this is exactly what they're talking about.  $15 is absolutely shameful.

There are beautiful Christmas displays all over the bay area for free.  Check out http://lightsofthevalley.com/ to see which ones are close to you.  No I do not work for the website.  I just stumbled across it years ago and wanted to share the information for FREE so everyone can have some nice Christmas memories in these harsh economic times.

Merry Christmas and God Bless!

Was just looking online to see how much it cost to see the lights. It says only $10.00. Am I wrong? That doesn't seem like a lot of money

Welcome to CA.  Everything costs real money here.

Since this state is bankrupt Democrat fiasco, here is Uncle Johnny's prescription for Christmas cheer.

Take 1 quart of egg nog. Add 4 ounces of Rum (Lucky brand will do just fine Thank You).

Pour into a cup.

Drink cup. Repeat 4 times.

Turn on some Christmas music.

Watch the You Tube video of the display.

You'll be in the Christmas spirit, feel just fine and still have that $15 in your pocket.

 PFFTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

$15 dollars plus we get cool glasses and enjoy the warmth of our car.

I say thats a bargin the event in Great America in Santa Clara cost $18 for parking plus $15 dollars a person to get in.

And Sure Christmas in the park is nice after you go through the traffic find parking and walk blocks to the park and then the food is pretty expensive and so are the rides you end up pretty much spending the $15 or more.

I preffer Fantasy of Lights over any other Holiday themed park but that is just me.

It was 10$ thru 12/6, now 15$.  It is a lovely tradition to start with your families and you can blow 15$ on things much useless....do it!!!  Lots of hard work put into this event...appreciate it!  Or????  Don't go..

This is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE above and beyond what Californian's and Bay Area folks pay in taxes.  Come on...it cost $15 for 15 mins of lights?

So.. Hoping to see the light show, we went to Vasona Park today (Saturday, Dec 14, 2013) around 7pm - and the line of cars waiting to get in was about 2 miles!! It stretched all of University Ave, to Lark Ave, to Winchester Blvd. We went somewhere else for a couple hours, returned to find even longer line.. This is just insane! Don't people have anything to do but to sit in a running car in a 2-3 hour line that's not even moving? Crazy.

It's a fundraiser for the park. Calm down on the cheapness. It's a great park and they need to keep it going. Suck it up and enjoy the giving season.
