The truth is there are several (perhaps as many as 25, 50 or more) bodies still interred at the old cemetery.  There was an incident in the late '50s or so when a crew working on a sewer main on N. Santa Cruz dug up a coffin, which was moved and given a proper burial at the new cemetery.

Thanks so much. I remember reading about a baby or toddler coffin being dug up in recent decades, but wasn't sure when that was. Interesting that it could be as many as 25 or 50. I have no idea how many bodies were there at the height of the cemetery days. That would be an interesting historical fact to know.

Thanks for your input.

On saturday I was hiking at the castle rock trail off highway 9 and I found what appeared to be a dog tag, but with the engraving 'los gatos cemetery 22023'. It was hidden in a crevice in a rock, and I was wondering if it had any meaning? Like how old could this be and what was its purpose? It is completely dark and looks pretty old.

Hi Kendall,

I'm so sorry but I cannot help you with your question. I have absolutely no idea about that. But perhaps you could call the Los Gatos Memorial Park (which is actually in the Cambrian Park area of San Jose)?  Their number is (408) 356-4151‎.  Good luck!
