SSL WIN 1ST HALF, LAMPERT WINS 2ND
SSL WINS GAME
What a crazy match this was. Early on, it looked as if SSL would run away with this one. But, some late arriving Lampert players would have something to say about that, & turn this match into a nail-biter.
SSL was off to a comfortable 5-0 lead, playing great defense & creating many offensive chances. This looked like a match SSL could just mail in. Then, things changed. After two goals by Ken Brigden, & one each from Steve Rankin, Jim Ahearn & Bob Janko, it looked as if SSL could put the throttle on cruise-control.
But slowly, Lampert crept back into the game, a little at a time. No one on the SSL side appeared to be alarmed, since at the half, they held a solid 5-2 lead. With the promise of more goals to come for SSL after the interval, no one looked concerned. However, 2nd half goals for SSL, as they would soon find out, were hard to come by.
As the 2nd unfolded, Lampert picked up where they left off, notching a 3rd goal, narrowing the SSL lead to 2 goals. Still, not to worry. A 2 goal lead, 2nd half, playing well, what's the problem! Well, after Lampert tallied their 4th goal, closing the lead to one goal at 5-4, they got the attention of SSL. In a furious finish, in what turned out to be a very physical game, SSL held on & posted a very difficult, 5-4 win over a stubborn, highly motivated Lampert side.
What looked early on like a cake-walk for the SSL side ultimately turned into a full-fledged, end to end, shootout. In one sense, Lampert didn't so much lose the match as much as they ran out of time. On the other hand, SSL played just well enough to win despite their inability to notch a single 2nd half goal. And, a win is a win, no matter how you come by it. SSL just confined all their scoring to the 1st half.
To be fair, SSL played very well defensively, giving up goals on a couple counters when SSL was pressing the attack, & one unfortunate turnover. But they also controlled the pace of the game as well as maintained the majority of the possession. Going into the match, Lampert was undefeated. With this win, each of these two teams have two wins & a loss for a total of 6 points. However, SSL is in 2nd place as a result of the head to head tie breaker rule, 3 points behind first place Maddox. SSL will meet Maddox later in the session & that match may well determine first place in the division.
Next up for SSL is a new entry in the division, Vintage Utd. These two will clash next Tuesday @ 9:25. Hope you can join us for the match. Thanks for reading.
