O-40 LOSES TOUGH 2-1 MATCH TO MADDOX
0-30 TIES COBRAS
The O-40 match pitted old rivals against one another for the umteenth time. But, what has become the customary, and unfortunate, outcome for the SSL side, Maddox won yet another match, abeit a thriller, 2-1. SSL has lost 7 straight to Maddox, last winning 7-6 on November 18th. It looks as if these two will match up in yet another final with SSL hoping to change its luck & secure both a win & a championship.
In this past Tuesdays match, defense was the rule of the game. Neither team was giving the other much space & shots were scarce. But Maddox, as they have a tendancy to do, kept chipping away til they managed a couple first half tallys on less than brilliant opportunities. But goals are goals & they made them stand up, yielding only a single tally to SSL defender Mike Hartsook late in the game, resulting in the final 2-1 score.
Now SSL has one more league match this Tuesday @ 7:35 vs the winless Vetta Blue side. Should SSL take care of business in this match, they'll once again find themselves pitted against Maddox in the championship finals. It would certainly be refreshing to come away with a win & finally get that Maddox monkey off their back & bring home a championship, all in the same game. Hope to see you Tuesday.
The SSL O-30 side found themselves in a tough one last Thursday vs the Cobras. In what has become a fairly forgettable session, SSL finds themselves without a berth in the finals for the first time in the last 9 sessions. During this 8 session run on the championship they were victorius 5 of those times. Quite a remarkable record. But this session, well, it's certainly not one for the record books.
Facing the Cobra's for the second time this session, SSL was trying to avenge a 4-3 loss to them in the first game on 4/9. They would find that difficult. Following a scoreless first half, with each team playing great defense, SSL was to break the ice first in the 2nd with a goal early in the half by the always hustling Mike Hogan.
Working hard in the offensive corner, Hoags gathered the ball, battled his way to the front of the goal & having his first & second shots turned back, stayed on top of the play, finally finishing on his third attempt, putting SSL up 1-0. The lead would be short-lived.
On a dead-ball just outside the SSL box, one of the Cobra forwards lazered a shot past the wall & into the upper 90. Keeper David Shelton had no chance. Score tied 1-1.
SSL continued to play well both defensively & offensively, but had little to show for their offensive efforts. On a play in which the Cobra keeper was in a foot race to the ball with Sladan Kurtovic, Kurtovic won that race, collected the ball & calmly lifted a looping shot over the keeper, rushing back to his spot in the goal, & the other Cobra defenders, to notch his first goal of the evening with his well-timed shot. That gave the lead back to SSL 2-1. But, try as they might, they couldn't hold it.
Late in the 2nd half, the Cobra's tied the match at 2 & that's how it ended. As a result of the tie, the Cobra's were eliminated from the championship match, instead sending Freaky Shakra to play Sinclair & Rush, whom SSL defeated in last sessions championship 6-0.
So now it's time to rebuild & re-set for the upcoming session. It looks like the entire roster will return & there may even be a new addition. The thing that hurt this sessions efforts was, in spite a carrying 13 on the roster, many of those players missed a lot of games. Edin Coralic was hurt the first shift of the first game. Michael Poropat missed the entire session with a nagging foot injury, Jayson Adelsberger & David Hipperson each missed due to work obligations & there were a number of players missing from a handful of games, & that's a recipe for a poor session. It certainly was that.
But, now with that session behind them & preparing for the new session, SSL is in hope of righting the ship & securing yet another spot in the championship final. So, stay tuned. Thanks for reading.
