SSL O-30, 3, CD COBRA'S 2

SSL O-30 SWOOP TO YET ANOTHER TITLE

CAPTURE 4TH CHAMPIONSHIP IN LAST 7 SESSIONS

In yet another display of willpower, after not really playing their best game, the SSL O-30 side was able to bring home another championship. Following their 9-0 romp last week, in a game they totally dominated, the championship match proved to be quite the opposite. Although they had the majority of the play & possession, for whatever reason, they couldn't kick their performance into a higher gear.

Continuinually looking for that knock-out punch, to try to put the game out of reach & put their pesky opponent away, they tried all game to get that ever elusive 2 or 3 goal lead, but just couldn't put the finishing touches on some marvelous ball movement. Many times they were one or two touches from finishing on plays that resulted from great build up & distribution. To be sure, one of the reasons that goals were scarce, was the play of the Cobra's keeper this night, who was severely tested, facing upwards of 30 shots, compared to 10 for the SSL keeper.

Additionally, there was also some poor play by SSL that helped keep the Cobras in the match. Several times during the course of the game, the SSL side would put together a string of creative passes, pressing the attack, only to turn the ball over at the last moment with an unforced error, passing the ball directly to the opponent or the keeper. It seemed that they just could not play their normal relaxed style.

The game started well & quickly for SSL. Ronnie Rowden got the scoring started with a tap-in goal on the line that was the result of some great passwork, finding the open man & stringing together a series of passes. At this point, with as easy as it was to finish on this play early in the match, it looked like it would be a long night for the Cobra's. Not so fast, my friends. This one turned out to be a white-knucke nail-biter.

The Cobra's came right back to knot the score at 1-1 on a strange looking ball. One of their defenders was well outside the white line with a lot of traffic between him & the goal. He got off what looked to be kind of a worm-burning, half-fast knuckle ball, that threaded its way thru a myriad of legs & just to the left of startled keeper David Shelton, & into the bottom left of the goal. David later said he was screened on the shot. The remainder of the half was more of the same. A lot of chances for SSL & very few for the Cobra's, but still the scored remained 1-1. SSL just could not finish to put the game out of reach.

The 2nd half was much like the first. SSL had many opportunities that were squandered. As most of you know, the longer you allow an opponent to stay in the game,  the greater your chances are of giving it away. At this point, it seemed as though SSL was fighting it. They were still putting together lot's of opportunities, but came away frustrated when those chances were denied. It was just then that Jayson Adelsberger stepped up.

Adelsberger, with the ball at his feet just inside the center line, & marked by a single defender, took matters into his own hands, or feet shall we say. In spite of the fact that most of the Cobra defenders were between him & the goal, he decided to take his opponent on. With one quick step to his left, he was around the defender & sprinting towards the goal, leaving his opponent lagging far behind. Just as he got to the white line, he let loose with a right-footed bomb that whizzed by the startled keeper into the upper right hand corner of the net for a much-deserved, & needed, 2-1 lead. You could hear an audible sigh of relief from the SSL bench. Then things turned ugly.

On another rush by Adelsberger, he was taken down by a gang of 3 defenders & was sent off. More of the same was to permeate the half. Later, Bernard Anic was sent off for two minutes, however, the Cobra's, known for their physical play, were never carded throughout the match, in spite of their style of play. The hits just kept on coming.

Then Mike Hogan, who played a stellar game throughout, looked to have sealed the deal with an excellent 2nd effort goal. He out-worked his opponents, gathered the ball in the corner, fought thru traffic into the box, & buried the ball to up the lead to 3-1. But the game was far from over in spite of that tally. With about 1:30 left in the match, Tony Meadows was called for pushing in the box, resulting in a penalty kick which the Cobra's converted, narrowing the score to 3-2. The final minute of play seemed like an hour long, with players flying all over the field,  SSL looking for the two goal lead again & the Cobra's looking for the tie.

But it was not the Cobra's night. SSL closed out the match with a thrilling 3-2 win, & locked up yet another championship. Congrats to them on an undefeated session, flawed only by a single tie the first game of the session. But now it starts all over again. With many new teams in the division, it will, as it always is, be a battle. So stay tuned. See you next session. Thanks for reading.

COBRA-KAI TAKES OPEN CO-ED CROWN

POST SHUT-OUT IN CHAMPIONSHIP

In a bit of an upset, the Cobra-Kai side defeated perenial open co-ed champs Dulaney's 2-0 in the finals. If you're going to shut someone out, there's no better time then the championship game. Their keeper, Harry, was obviously on his game, turning away every Dulaney attempt. In turn, the Cobra-Kai side made two goals, by Brian on a header & Laura, stand up, to post the victory.

Just the previous week, these two teams, in a preview of the championship game, battled to a 2-2 tie. So, this was a great reward for the hard work of the Cobra-Kai side & a great way to close out a championship session, with a shutout. Congrats to them. Again, thanks for reading.

MITRE RESULTS

RUDE AWAKENING FOR SSL O-30

THIS ISN'T THE THURSDAY NIGHT LEAGUE, TOTO!

Well, the short version is that it was fun. Everyone, players & their entourage included, had a great time. However, on the field the scores were ugly. 5-0, 8-0 & 7-1. Clearly outclassed by these opponents, the SSL side aquitted themselves well in spite of the competition, never quitting, playing hard all the way till the end.

In fact, the 1st game, vs Barristers, & their team captain & go-to guy, Daryl Doran, was actually closer than it sounded. The 1st goal wasn't scored until the 11 minute mark, followed about 5 minutes later by their 2nd goal, & that's the way the half ended. Unfortunately, about 2 minutes into the 2nd half, Barristers scored their 3rd goal, & it was even more of an uphill battle from there.

A lack of experience at this level really showed. SSL could never quite get into their stride. Much of that was due to the opponent & their swarming defenses, but also, some of it was due to the spectacle that is the Mitre. Playing from behind was also a factor, & SSL found themselves on their heels most of this game & the 2nd game later Saturday. They just could not put together any consistency on offense & the opponents defenders, as a credit to them, always were defending, & attacking, with 5. The speed of the game at this level was fun to watch. Not so much fun to play against.

The 2nd match was no contest. Pitted against last years National O-30 Outdoor Champion & eventual Mitre Tourney champion, St. Louis Scott Gallagher, they scored in the first 30 seconds of the game as a result of some confusion as to who was playing what position due to having to move a player to a different position because another player was arriving just a couple minutes late. Then, less than a minute later, SLSG scored their 2nd goal, & that was a deficit from which SSL could not recover, against many teams, much less SLSG. It seemed like the harder they tried, the behinder they got.

Sunday was going to be a difficult day no matter what. Of the 13 field players on the roster, 3 for sure would not be back for the 3rd game. As it turned out, only 7 players were able to make the match, & one of them got injured early in the 2nd half. So, with one sub to try to spell tired players, it was an uphill battle before the game ever started. But surprisingly, the SSL side played very well, & in spite of the score, created a variety of scoring chances, narrowly missing on two. Had either of those two, or both for that matter, gone in, it could well have changed the outcome of this game. Not to mention the fact that had all of the scheduled players been able to play, that may well have altered the outcome as well. But, woulda, coulda, shoulda, it was what it was, & you dance with who you bring. They played hard but came up short. But it wasn't for a lack of trying.

As many of you know, my glass is always half full. This is no exception. I saw positives throughout the matches & it was a great learning experience for the SSL bunch. We've traveled a lot. Louisville, Indy, assorted tourneys. But nothing like this. This was a great opportunity to learn from the best. As most of you know, our SSL side is a good team. But not a great team. We've had great success over the years. But, if you want to play with the big boys, the Mitre is where you  need to be. And they were.

Yeah, they lost all three. By big margins. However, they saw where they need to be if they want to compete at that level. As I mentioned in the title, this isn't Thursday night o-30 at Concord. If you're going to be the best, you have to play the best. We did, they won, but, we'll be back. The better for our experience.

And a word about the tourney. Tim Jennings & his staff did a marvelous job of organizing & running the event. Games were on time; refereeing was at it's outdoor best, not the old Concord Thursday night variety, & it was some of the best & entertaing soccer you'll see locally. The best of the best played in this tourney, & it was obvious, even painfull at times. The skill level & speed of play was professional. So, hats off to the Vetta organization for staging another successful Mitre tourney, & particularly Tim Jennings & his staff. It was a great weekend of soccer.

Now it's back to Concord. Once again, in fact for the 8th time in 11 sessions, SSL O-30 will be in the finals this Thursday against the CD Cobras. Hopefully their experiences at the Mitre will help them bring home another O-30 title. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-30 9, THE BREW, 0

O-30 SIDE PREPS FOR MITRE TILT

CLOSES SESSION WITH SHUTOUT

In their final tune-up prior to the start of the Mitre Tournament this weekend, the SSL O-30 side put together one of their best games of the session, posting goalie David Shelton's first shut-out of the session, with an 9-0 win over The Brew.

Dominating all facets of the game, offense, defense & goal-tending, they fairly cruised to this win. However, they struggled slightly in the first half. They were moving the ball briskly, finding the open man & creating multiple chances on each possession, resulting in many shots. But, they couldn't find the mark, shooting either high, wide or at the keeper. The back of the net was becoming elusive the later into the half that they went.

Finally, on a great lead ball from Will Suk to a streaking Jayson Adelsberger, from the left side of the net, Adelsberger one-touched a bullet past the keeper to break the ice & start the scoring. But, in spite of the goal, the drought continued. Then late in the half, Johnny Pens put SSL up 2-0, again as a result of great passing, with a nice settle & shot. That's the way the half ended, with SSL up 2-0.

They finally righted the ship in the second half, finishing on a barrage of shots that resulted from more continued great ball-work. Erupting for another 7 goals in the half, they put the game away early, & cruised home with the win, using this time to work on their game in preparation for the Mitre Tourney this weekend, & a re-match in next weeks finals with the CD Cobra's.

Earlier this session, in the only match to this point with the Cobra's, the SSL side won a scintillating nailbiter of a match, 4-3. After being down to the Cobra's 3-1, with less than 4 minutes left in the game, the SSL side rebounded with 3 goals against a stunned Cobra defense, to post this thrilling 4-3 win. The finals next week should be no different. Hope you'll all be able to join us. Thanks for reading.

MITRE FINAL ROSTER, SCHEDULE & DIRECTIONS

It's almost here! The Mitre Tourney is fast approaching. This weekend, January 24th & 25th, some of the best amatuer players in the midwest will square off in this fast-paced, high-energy contest that will feature some of the best clubs the soccer community can provide.

The SSL O-30 side received some fairly good game times, with the first two games on Saturday, @ 3:40 pm & 9:30 pm & on Sunday @ 12:20 pm. The bracket with all the teams & times follow below.

The finalized rosters are also below & there were some minor changes due to the unfortunate result of not being able to have enough O-40 teams enter in order to have a tourney for that group. So, a couple players from the projected O-40 team were moved to the O-30 team for some additional depth.

I've also added below a link for the directions to Vetta St. Charles. I hope many of you can join us for this entertaining event. Not only just to support the SSL side, but to experience the excitement this tourney will provide as well as the skill of the individual players that will be on display. Speaking from personal experience, watching the quarters, semi's & finals of this tourney, in all the brackets, was tremendously entertaining & exciting. You won't be disappointed.

Additionally, I've added a link below for the tourney rules. Thought you might like to know what not to do. Hope to see you there.

SSL O-40, 12, VETTA RED, 3

PUSH FOR FINAL BERTH CONTINUES

SOLID WIN IS 4TH IN A ROW

The O-40 boy's raced to a 7-0 half-time lead & never looked back, in their preparation for the showdown with the Maddox side next week in game 7 & the finals a week later in game 8. Leading the SSL in this game vs Vetta Red, were 3 players. Todd Loretta & Joe Behr lead all scorers with 4 goals, followed up by Steve Rankin with 3.

Goalie John Kozuscek took a shut-out late into the game, but lost it in the final minutes when the Vetta Red side "erupted" for 3 tallies. Had they secured the shutout, it would have been his 3rd of the session. As it was, he & his teammates will have to settle for just another win. The shutout will have to wait.

Next week will be a preview of the finals. As the schedule works out, SSL will face Maddox two weeks in a row. Next week is the final regular season game vs Maddox. The following week is the finals & with Maddox holding onto the 1st place position & SSL the 2nd, they'll face each other a second week in a row & third time this session, for first place & the championship for this session.

So, next week should be an interesting match with these two sides knowing they'll face each other twice in a row. Game time is 8:30. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

MITRE UPDATE

I HAVE GOOD NEWS.....

I HAVE BAD NEWS......

First, the good news. I have the Over 30 schedule & the times are attractive. The bad news? There will be no Over 40 divsion in the Mitre. They couldn't get enough teams. Ergo, there will be no Over 40 Soccer St. Louis team participating in the Mitre. That's unfortunate for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that about 15 players who thought they were playing in the Mitre, won't be. Additionally, I had to move around a few players, trying to accomodate as many as I could, but, obviously couldn't accomodate everyone. Bummer!!!

Back to the good news department, the schedule for the O-30 guys is as follows:

SATURDAY:                   3:40 pm vs. Barristers              Field #1

9:30 pm vs. SLSG                     Field #1

SUNDAY:                       12:20 pm vs. FSC                     Field #1

ROSTER:

     1. MICHAEL POROPAT              6. EDIN CORALIC                          11. TODD LORETTA

     2. TONY MEADOWS                   7. DAVID HIPPERSON                  12. JOHNNY PENS

     3. RONNIE ROWDEN                8. CASEY WALSH                           13. WILL SUK

     4. SLADAN KURTOVIC              9. MIKE HOGAN                               14. GUILLERMO CORTEZ

     5. BERNARD ANIC                   10. JAYSON ADELSBERGER         15. MONDO FERNANDEZ

                                                                                                                         16. DAVID SHELTON

DIRECTIONS

Take Hyway 40 west from I-270. Pass thru Chesterfield, cross over the Missouri River & turn right on Hyway 94. Then turn left on Mid Rivers Mall Dr. Then turn left on St. Peters Cottleville road to Vetta St. Charles. Their address is 1425 St. Peters Cottleville Rd. The phone is 636 498 4625. It'll be great soccer & great fun. Hope to see all of you there.

 TOMMY HOGAN UPDATE

Again, good news. Spoke with Carol Hogan yesterday & she said Tommy came thru the latest procedure with flying colors. Recovering nicely, he'll be released either Monday or Tuesday. That's great news. Thanks to everyone for thinking of him. It obviously helped.

Thanks for reading.

SSL O-30 6, SINCLAIR & RUSH, 3

SSL O-30 PREVAIL

LOCK UP CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 8TH TIME IN LAST 11 SESSIONS

In what proved to be a very, very difficult match against a formidible Sinclair & Rush team, SSL hung on to post a big win, locking up thier 6th straight visit to the finals in the O 30 division. Sinclair & Rush, prior to the merger, were champions of Division C from last session, & currently stood in 3rd place in the 11 team O 30 men's division. Sporting 9 points on 24 goals for, & only 16 against, the SSL side knew that they'd have a difficult match in this first time ever meeting between the two sides. Additionally, it would be played on small field #3 which always provides for some, shall we say, interesting outcomes.

After about 10 minutes of even, 0-0 play by both of the contestants, Sinclair broke thru first on a great goal with a one-time rocket from just outside the box to the right of the goal, that goalie David Shelton had no chance on. But, SSL came right back with their own answer on a great  2nd effort & lot's of hustle by Will Suk to finish an improbable play, to knot the score at 1 all.

Then SSL started to exert some offensive pressure, while narrowly avoiding several point blank opportunities by Sinclair, that they either missed on or Shelton came up with some acrobatic saves, preserving the 1-1 tie. SSL pumped in 3 more first half goals for a comfortable 4-1 lead to end the half. However, the comfort level soon evaporated.

In the span of just 2 minutes midway thru the 2nd half, Sinclair closed the gap from 4-1 to 4-3, tightening up the match & causing considerable angst on the SSL side. SSL, during this span, just could not possess the ball, nor create any offensive chances, while Sinclair moved the ball smartly, & created several good opportunities for their forwards, who capitalized for those two quick goals.

Then the SSL righted the ship, maintained their composure, & started to do what they do so well, possessing the ball & creating opportunities. They added two more goals to match the Sinclair side, widening the lead to 6-3, secured the match & that was the final score. But, this match, after a long holiday layoff & a bye all squeezed into the last month, helped to shake off a lot of rust, & provided a tough test, to help SSL get ready for both the championship match as well as the Mitre Tourney, coming up the 23rd of January.

By virtue of this win, the SSL side assured themselves of yet another berth in the finals, their 6th straight trip & 9th in the last 11 sessions. Remarkable! Next up, game #7, vs The Brew, again on field #3. That match is schedule for 8:55. Hope to see you all there. Thanks for reading.

MITRE UPDATE

Not a whole lot to report at this point. Haven't heard anything yet from the tourney regarding the schedules for the O-30 & O-40 teams. I suspect I'll hear something over the weekend. As soon as I do, I'll post that info here immediately. Also, I'll include Mapquest directions & the hotel we'll be using for Saturday night. Stay tuned. Following are the updated rosters:

SAY A PRAYER FOR TOMMY HOGAN

I'm sure that everyone knows Mike (Hoags) Hogan, a player for SSL for about a billion years. Well, you need to keep him & his family in your thoughts. His son, Tommy, 13, was admitted to Children's Hospital @ the Barnes-Jewish complex a couple days ago. Here's what I know, although I'm sure some of the details are missing.

He was suffering from flu-like symptons about a week or so ago, & the meds weren't working. They took him to the doctor who immediately admitted him. They operated on his skull, removing & then replacing a section over his left ear, roughly the shape of a 7, that went over & around his ear, to relieve pressure as well as remove the infection. Today, Friday, they'll do some more work on his sinus cavity, taking a 2nd culture, to make determinations on how best to treat it. He's scheduled to be released & head home next Monday.

However, it'll be a long recovery, probably about 6 weeks or so. Keep him & his family in your thoughts & prayers. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

SSL O-40, 11, LAMPERT 5

SSL STARTS SLOWLY,

FINISHES WITH A FLOURISH

In what proved to be a more difficult, albeit entertaining, game than anticipated for the SSL side, they managed to shake off the first half doldrums that plagued them, to post a comfortable, if not polished, 11-5 win over an extremely competitive Lampert side.

Although outshooting Lampert by a wide margin in both halves, due to some off-target shots, the first half ended in a 2-2 tie. SSL would certainly have to improve in the 2nd half or face an unwanted outcome. But improve they did. Riding on the offensive prowess of Steve Schlichtig, Johnny Pens & Steve Rankin, who each had 3 goals for the match, they then cruised to an 11-5 decision, turning a tight, closely contested, physical game into one in which they were pulling away at the end.

Securely entrenched in 2nd place with 12 points, just 3 behind leader, Maddox, they approach the final two games of the regular session. Next up will be Vetta Red next Tuesday @ 9:25. The final match of the session the week following, they'll be faceing the 1st place Maddox side & it could well be a pre-view of the Championship match 3 weeks hence. Hope to see you next Tuesday. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-40 SECURES NEW SPONSOR

WELCOME "THE SPORTS ATTIC"

Last week, thru the continuing efforts of Tim Kelley, the SSL O-40 side entered a relationship with The Sports Attic, located on Manchester, as one of the teams sponsors. We want to take this opportunity to thank both Tom Kelley, owner, & Kevin Gallagher, manager, for their support & co-operation.

At this point, it looks like following every 7:30 pm Tuesday game, the SSL will repair to the friendly confines of "the attic" to partake of friendship, beverages, great food & big screen sports. So, those of you that are so inclined, we invite you to join us for some fun following our early Tuesday games. Again, a big, big thankyou to the boys at the Sports Attic, You're the best. See you soon.

SSL O-40 7, SHAMROCKS 0

SSL RETURNS FROM HOLIDAY WITH VENGANCE

KOZUSCEK POSTS 2ND SHUTOUT OF SESSION

It sure didn't seem like they were rusty from the holiday layoff. Ten seconds into the game, Steve Rankin collected the ball in the box, turned, laid off a beautiful ball to Johnny Pens, who only had to one-touch it into the back of the net from about two feet away, to take a very quick, 1-0 lead over the Shamrocks. That was just a taste of what was to come.

Goalie John Kozuscek faced only 3 shots on goal in the first half, with the SSL side dishing out a stifling defense, to take a 4-0 lead to the half. That trend continued.

Allowing only 3 additional shots on goal in the 2nd half, the SSL defense continued to shut down the Shamrock offense, providing considerable breathing room for the offense to do what they do best.....score goals. Adding 3 more tallies in the 2nd half, the SSL side closed out a workmanlike, if not spectacular match with a 7-0 win. Showing no signs of rust from the long layoff, they started quckly, worked methodically, created a lot of offensive opportunities, & capitalized when able, & generally played a solid game on both ends of the field.

The highlight of the evenings activities had to be  the appearance of former professional player with the St. Louis Steamers, Mike Kelley, brother of Tim Kelley. You couldn't tell he hadn't played in more than two years, with his deft ball-handling & passing. About 20 minutes following the conclusion of the game, Mike had finally caught his breath & said about the game, "it was fun". Well, it was fun having him play.

Next week the opponent is a new addition to the league, Lampert. Game time is 7:35. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.
