SSL O-40, 8, VETTA RED, 5
O-40 RECOVER FROM TOUGH LOSS
EVEN RECORD AT 1 & 1
After a difficult loss last week 6-4 versus Maddox, & after leading at one point 3-1, took out that frustration on the Vetta Red team, posting a solid 8-5 win. In this game, which started slowly for SSL & featured an early 1-0 lead by Vetta Red, SSL gradually built momentum & reeled off 5 straight goals en route to a 5-1 lead at the interval.
The first half also featured a team defense that bent but wouldn't break. Lead by keeper David Shelton, the SSL side turned away chance after chance by Vetta Red, while at the same time, creating many offensive chances, converting on 5.
The 2nd half was a bit different. After taking a commanding 7-2 lead, SSL withstood a run by Vetta Red that resulted in 3 straight unanswered goals narrowing the score to 7-5. But that's where the run ended. SSL added an 8th goal, stretching their lead to 3 goals at 8-5, & Vetta Red never got any closer. SSL closed out the 8-5 win, & evened their record at 1-1.
SSL was lead on offense by Steve Rankin with 4 goals & 1 helper; Ken Brigden with 3 & 1; Bob Janko with 1 goal & Johnny Pens with 2 helpers.
Next week SSL will face Lampert, who currently sits in first place witha 2-0 record & a league leading 3 goals against, @ 9:25, looking to improve their record to 2-1. Should be an entertaining match. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-30, 8, PLS ZOOM, 6
O-30 HOLD ON TO WIN THRILLER
REGAIN SHARE OF 1ST
The way this game started, most would have thought it would be a cake-walk & you can go ahead and pocket the win. We all knew better. This game featured two entirely different halves.
After jumping out to a quick 6-0 first half lead against the Zoom, the players knew this game was far from over. The Zoom had completely revamped their side since last session & some of their players were late arrivals. Several of the goals SSL scored were when the Zoom had only a single sub. As the Zoom players arrived, the game tightened up considerably.
But the SSL side in the first half was just too much for the Zoom to handle. That may have been their best half in quite some time. The Zoom scored a couple late in the half to tighten up the game & the score at the interval was 7-2. But the second half featured a far different landscape & desperation from both sides. This match was played like a championship match between two championship caliber teams. It was, at the same time, both thrilling & scary to watch.
Players from both sides were flying all over the pitch, diving at balls, making full field runs & generally expending an enormus amount of energy. As the second half unfolded, the Zoom picked up the pace, scoring 4 goals with their final one coming at the 3:12 mark & SSL netted just a lone tally. However, at that point, SSL had built up too large a lead, & played too strong of a defense for the Zoom to overcome. But what a game it was. Players from both sides were exhausted from the effort. An interesting note regarding the Zoom is that a single player scored all six of their goals. Remarkable.
Scoring for the match: Casey Walsh & Johnny Pens, 2 goals each; Mike Hogan & Will Suk, 1 goal & 1 helper each; Ronnie Rowden & Tony Meadows, 1 goal each; Bernard Anic 2 helpers; Dave Shelton & Guillermo Cortez, 1 helper each.
Next up is Sinclair & Rush at 7:05 on field #3. The last time SSL faced S&R was in last sessions championship game, a convincing 6-0 win for SSL. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-30, 10 BEER MONKEYS, 1
O-30 REBOUNDS FROM UGLY LOSS
POST CONVINCING WIN IN COMMANDING FASHION
In what turned out to be the Bernard Anic show, the SSL O-30 side took out their revenge for the previous weeks loss on the unfortunate team that had to face them this Thursday in the form of new league entry, The Beer Monkeys. In what started out early as a tight 1-1 game, suddenly exploded & turned into a romp, with SSL scoring 9 straight unanswered goals on their beleagured opponent, & secured a textbook 10-1 win, evening their record at 1-1.
In the midst of this shellacking, Bernard Anic, perhaps taking out his frustration from the previous weeks painful loss, scored FIVE goals in this match, surpassing his previous game high 3 goals from 2 sessions ago. It seemed that Anic was playing all five positions, was everywhere at all times, & received every pass, & converted on every play. It seems as though his teammates were constantly shaking his hand in congratulations. He was truly a one man band. A band on a mission. You'd have to say it was "mission accomplished".
The game itself was a clinic. On the heels of a poorly played game last week versus the Cobras, this was quite the opposite. Playing dominating possession, the SSL side virtually controlled the entire game, allowing the Beer Monkeys few opportunities & on only one of those opportunities were they able to convert. It was not nearly enough.
SSL controlled the flow & pace of the game, creating many opportunities, which SSL failed to capitalize on early, creating a bit of mild concern. However, when Anic put the team on his back, it was "katie bar the door". It was Anic right, Anic left & Anic down the middle. He was the everywhere man. Suddenly it was 5-1 at the interval, & SSL never looked back, closing it out with 4 more 2nd half goals & a suffocating overall performance by the defense. It appears that SSL has recovered nicely from the previous weeks loss, which ended a 16 game unbeaten streak. It appears that the lesson learned here is, if you have the unfortunate duty of being the team that has to face SSL after one of their rare losses, look out!
In addition to the Bernard Anic show of 5 goals on the evening, there actually were others that contributed to the SSL offense: Will Suk, 2 goals; Johnny Pens, 1 goal & 3 helpers; Ronnie Rowden & David Hipperson, 1 & 2 each & Tony Meadows & Casey Walsh, 1 helper each.
Next weeks match will be versus old nemisis, PLS Zoom, who won their first match 6-2 & sport a 1 - 0 record, after a first week bye. That match is scheduled for 9:35 on field #1. Hope to see you then. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-40, 8, VETTA BLUE, 4
O-40 CLOSES SESSION ON POSITIVE NOTE
USE FIRST HALF AS SPRINGBOARD TO WIN
After a disappointing 6-4 loss last week to this same Vetta Blue team, after being up 4-3, they managed to salvage a measure of revenge with a workmanlike 8-4 victory. In the match last week, SSL just couldn't get into a groove, struggled mightily, & eventually squanderd the lead & the win. That was not the case this week.
In perhaps their best match thus far, the SSL side played possession marvelously, knocking the ball around, creating a tremendous amount of offense & banging in 8 goals for the match. It could have been quite a bit more, but a strong effort by the Blue keeper kept them in the match early. Save for a 3 goals in 3 minutes portion of the 2nd half by the blue side, the final score could have been even more lopsided.
SSL sped out to a comfortable 5-1 lead at the interval & seemed to have things well in hand. However, with a couple of quirky plays & mis-plays, Blue netted 3 goals in 3 minutes early in the 2nd, to close the marging to 5-4. But, SSL, never losing their composure, went on to finish 3 more times in the 2nd, closing out the 8-4 win.
Now, with two players returning for the next session in Todd Loretta & Bob Janko, the SSL should be even stronger with more depth, & will look to contend for the title. See you next week. Thanks for reading.
Scoring in the match: Johnny Pens, 3 goals & a helper; Steve Rankin, 2 & 2; Jim Ahearn & Tim Kelley 1 & 1; Marty Issa, 1 goal & Steve Schlichtig 2 helpers.

CD COBRAS, 4, SSL O-30 3
SSL O-30 SUFFER HEARTBREAKING DEFEAT
1ST LOSS IN 17 MATCHES
After all their hard work, after falling behind early & then roaring back to eliminate a 3-1 deficit, ultimately it was all for naught. The CD Cobras scored the game winning goal with under a minute to play on a set piece, dashing the hopes of the SSL side. SSL was hoping to salvage a tie out of this extremely physical, rough & tumble match & extend their unbeaten streak to 17. But it was not to be. It all ended on what initially looked like a harmless dead-ball foul.
The Cobras set the pace of the game by taking the first lead. Midway thru the first half, following some offensive pressure by SSL, the Cobras collected the ball & sent a long pass up the middle to one of their breaking forwards. With the SSL defense pushing up to support the offense, the Cobra forward managed to get around the SSL defender & started on a breakaway. It resulted in a 1-0 lead for the Cobras, when they powered the shot into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. That lead would be short-lived.
Jayson Adelsberger tied the score at 1-1 off of a dead-ball foul on an assist by Johnny Pens on which he laid the ball off to Adelsberger who in turn, one-timed a bomb that found the back of the net. It remained 1-1 for the remainder of the half. The 2nd half however, looked like something right out of the movie, "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly".
The bad was the 3 second half goals that SSL gave up, including the game winner. The good was the two goals scored by SSL, on tremendous efforts, that ended up tying the score with just under 5 minutes to play.
The Cobras charged to a 3-1 lead midway thru the 2nd half. After theCobras 3rd goal, the future looked bleak for SSL. There wasn't a lot of time left in the match & SSL had only scored a single tally to this point. But things can turn around quickly in an indoor game, & they did. SSL continued to apply pressure, as they had done all match, & positive things began to happen.
David Hipperson, who had been on the doorstep all night long, but with no results, finally was the recipeint of some deserved good luck, when, following up on his initial shot, hustling all the way, popped one in from close range to narrow the score to a 3-2 Cobra advantage. The pace of the game continued to be frenetic.
Then, on a spectacular run out of the left sdie backfield by Sladan Kurtovic, he spied Johnny Pens streaking down the right sidelines & slotted a perfect diagonal ball right on Pens foot that he one-timed past a keeper who had no chance & that knotted the score at 3 all. Game on!
There were still about 5 minutes left in the game. Each team had chances but could not convert. That is, not until an inadvertant, innocent foul was committed on a Cobra forward, deep in the left corner with 56 tics left on the clock. They put the ball down & then put the ball in play, but it was wide right, caromed off the boards & into the possession of a SSL player, who then was going to lead the attack on the Cobra goal for the final opportunity of the game. But wait! The referees whistle had blown, stopping play, due to not everyone being ready.
On the ensueing restart, the SSL side looked confused as the ball was replaced at its original location. They were still wondering why the last play had been recalled. During this play, the Cobras quickly put the ball down, played it to a wide open forward stationed just outside the box who let go with a bomb that found its way thru several players, past a screened & startled keeper & into the back of the net for a 4-3 lead & time running out.
SSL could not bring that one back & time ran out on a frustrated & irritated SSL side. The streak was over. Just like that. Ironically, the last match SSL lost back in November was also was the first game of a session, following on the heels of a championship win. In that session, they came back to win all their remaining games, including the championship. Will it be the same this time? We'll just have to wait & see. Thanks for reading.

VETTA BLUE, 6, SSL 0-40, 4
SSL O-40 SQUANDER 4-3 LEAD
ALLOW 3 STRAIGHT GOALS
In a back-n-forth game that found the teams tied 2-2 at the interval, the SSL side took an early 4-3 2nd half lead, only to see it slip away. After working hard to carve out a lead while being short-handed, over a period of 10 minutes, they saw that lead evaporate.
Shortly after the interval, Vetta Blue scored to take their first lead of the game at 3-2. But, SSL came right back, tied the game & continued to pressure the Blue defense, as they had done all match long. But, most of their efforts came up short, whether it was due to a tremendous save by the Blue keeper, who had an extraordinary game, or just a breakdown in the effort deep in the offensive end.
However, following continued pressure, SSL forged ahead with the fourth goal of the evening, taking a 4-3 lead. It looked as if SSL would close out the match & secure the victory. Vetta Blue would have something to say about that.
Most of the Blue goals came on counters, including their 3 unanswered goals that won the game for them. SSL spent a lot of time & possession in their end, but to little or no avail. They out possessed & out shot Blue, but didn't have much to show for it. When those attacks by SSL went awry, Blue collected the ball & would counter. That's how they tied the score & eventually took the lead.
SSL found it difficult if not impossible to find the back of the net, in spite of their dominance on the field. On a small field like #3, when you have five of them & five of yours inside the white line, well, good luck with a shot finding its way thru the trees. When that happens, shots carom wildly & Blue quickly found themselves on the attack. That ultimately spelled the defeat for SSL & victory for Blue. When they countered, even though they were marked, they had the space that SSL could never find on the other end. It took too long for the SSL offensive build-up, whereas Blue had no build-up at all & instead relied on the counter for their opportunities, of which they took great advantgage.
However, SSL will have a chance to right that ship & extract a measure of revenge as they will meet Vetta Blue next week in a playoff for 3rd place in the division. We'll see if SSL can make up for the poor performance of this match. So, stay tuned. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-30, 6, SINCLAIR & RUSH 0
SSL O-30 SECURES 2ND TITLE IN A ROW
UNDEFEATED IN 16 STRAIGHT MATCHES
This championship win for the SSL O-30 men was the culmination of many things. An imperfect session that featured two ties & some lackluster efforts. Line-up changes. Injurys. Fifteen man-game no-shows. It was not their best performances. But that's what made this win, this league championship, all the sweeter. It's the mark of a good team.
They overcame a variety of the aforementioned obstacles & posted numbers that will be difficult to improve on or even match. Two shutouts in the same session for the first time ever, truly a rare feat for indoor soccer, & the second one in the championship match. Fewest goals ever allowed in a session, sixteen. Lead the league for the fifth consecutive session in fewest goals allowed. Lead the league in goal differential for the fifth straight session with 22. These are remarkable numbers. Two shutouts in the same session? Unheard of. These certainly will be difficult numbers to continue or even match.
So, what started out as a somewhat below average performance for the session, when the session was over & all the numbers tabulated, turned out to be a stellar session afterall. This will be a tough act to follow.
This match started much like the session played out. Like getting a root canal. Without a painkiller! It was a chess match for the first 16 minutes. SSL would attack & then defend. S&R would attack & then defend. SSL would counter an S&R attack, S&R would counter an SSL attack. Back and forth. Back and forth. But nothing to show for it by either side. Then, on an innocent looking play, SSL took their first lead of the match.
S&R was attacking when the SSL defense stiffened, collected the ball, & played it out to Ronnie Rowden. Rowden looked up immediately & saw Michael Poropat making a run down the right sideline, unmarked, & Rowden slotted him the ball. Poropat collected it mid-stride, raced in on the nervous keeper & hit a bomb from just outside the box that ended up in the bottom left corner of the net. 1-0 SSL. Sixteen minutes had elapsed in the first half before the first goal was scored. SSL then used the final six minutes of the first half to tack two more on to the total.
Jayson Adelsberger, on great hustle & using his great speed, sped around startled defenders & deposited the 2nd SSL goal into the back of the net to up the lead to a more comfortable 2-0. Then, on a quirky play just before the end of the half, Bernard Anic came out of the defensive backfield with the ball, teed it up just outside the white line & hit a bomb that was just wide right of the mark. The carom went directly to a S&R defender, but, under heavy pressure from Rowden & Adelsberger, chipped the ball back to his keeper. Unfortunately, the keeper was off his line, & the ball sailed into the vacated goal for an improbable goal & a 3-0 lead for SSL. They rode that score to the interval.
In the 2nd half, SSL really picked up the pace, finally playing one of their better matches. Riding the 3-0 lead, they could afford to take some chances on the offensive end & that resulted in 3 more tallys in the 2nd half. The first was on a bomb by David Hipperson, something SSL has become accustomed to. The 2nd on a slick little move by Rowden that completely fooled the keeper & ended up in the lower left corner of the net off his shot from the far right hand side of the box. The 3rd & final goal of the half & 6th on the evening was on a rocket by Mike Hogan who collected the ball in the right corner, flashed around a defender & unleashed this lazer of a shot that the keeper had no chance on. That completed the scoring for the evening & posted a 6-0 shutout win in the championship final. An interesting observation was that each of the goals was scored by a different player. What a way to close out a session.
Obviously, defense was key in this match. It wasn't just the defenders, Bernard Anic, Tony Meadows, Sladan Kurtovic, Casey Walsh & Mike Hogan that shut down the S&R attack & blocked many of their shots, but the play of keeper David Shelton. On two seperate occasions, he was called on to make saves on balls that looked to be past him & into the net. Again, remarkable. Both those saves were in the first half &, had either or both of those finished, the entire complexion of the match could have changed. As coaches, managers & even players have said over the years, in all sports for that matter, defense wins championships. This match was a perfect illustration.
Congratulations to the SSL O-30 men on their championship win. For their reward, they now get to do it all over again, starting next week. Thanks for reading.

JS LOGISTICS, 6, SSL O-40 2
OFFENSE, DEFENSE FIZZLES IN 2ND HALF
FALL OUT OF CONTENTION
It was truly the tale of two halves. The first goal was not scored til 10 minutes were gone & that by JS. But that was answered quickly by SSL, on a nice 2nd effort by Joe Behr, who finished on his own rebound. The first half was a bit of a chess match. Each team had equal possession, many chances but little scoring. It was 1-1 at the interval. The 2nd half was far different.
It started ugly & stayed ugly for SSL. JS scored early in the 2nd to take a 2-1 lead. Their next goal, the 3rd, was the back-breaker. In a surprisingly physical game, JS was called for one of their two 2 minute penaltys on the night. During this man advantage for SSL, SSL was pushing forward when JS collected the ball, broke out undefended, one on one with the SSL keeper, David Shelton. The JS forward then powered a shot past a helpless keeper, scoring a devastating, short-handed goal, upping their lead to 3-1, & they never looked back.
SSL could not recover. The team then started pushing up constantly, creating space & opportunities for JS, which they methodically took advantage of, scoring two more goals to take a 5-1 advantage. Only a mere 6 minutes had elapsed in the half &, for all intents & purposes, this game was over. Each side had one more tally to total the 6-2 final.
Entering this match, both SSL & JS were tied for 2nd place, vying for a spot in the finals against Maddox, who sports only a single forfeit loss on the session. Following this loss, SSL is now relegated to playing for 3rd place in two weeks. Next week they play Vetta Blue, a very difficult side, who trails SSL by 3 points & is in 4th place. So, next weeks 8:30 tilt will be more of the same. Two teams trying to defeat the other & take over sole possession of 3rd place. It should be fun. Hope to see you then. Thanks for reading.
