SSL 9, BUCKSHOTS 3
BACK TO BACK!!!
WIN OVER BUCKSHOTS THURSDAY,
FABULOUS REUNION SATURDAY
The SSL game against the Buckshots on small field #3, started slowly but escalated to some end to end action. However, end to end action on that field is "business as usual". Lots of shots, lots of traffic. But the SSL defense & keeper were up to the task.
Consistently stepping up & cutting off thru balls by the Buckshots, the defenders & mid-fielders were constantly feeding the ball to the on-rushing forwards. The forwards, early on, were spending too much time trying to make the perfect pass resulting in the perfect goal. The only thing that resulted in was another missed opportunity.
Finally, starting to become selfish & take the game into their own hands, or feet, if you will, the constant pressure on the Buckshots defense started paying off. In a big way.
With the SSL defenders still providing many opportunities for the forwards, they started cashing in. The goals then started coming fast & furious. The next thing you know, you look up & it's half-time, with SSL sporting a 4-0 lead. More of the same was to come in the 2nd half.
Picking up where they left off, in fact, actually picking it up a notch, they continued to press the attack from all angles. This included big contributions by the defenders, lead by Sladan Kurtovic with 2 goals, Casey Walsh, Tony Meadows & goalie Dave Shelton, chipped in, each with an assist. When the dust settled, the SSL side notched another win, this one by a 9-3 score, just one point out of first, & with a game in hand. (for those of you that don't know what that is, that means the team in 1st has played one more game & SSL one less.....if you still don't understand it, well, ask someone to explain it to you)
It's early in the session, just two games played, but once again, SSL has a sizable lead in goal differential. The difference between goals scored & goals against. Thought I'd go ahead & explain that one to you. Last session, which SSL pocketed another league title, they once again lead the league in goal differential, with a whopping 29. The closest pursuer was way, way back, with 6. Thus far this session, the differential is 11 with the closest pursuer at 3. Defense wins championships. Off to another good start.
Next week is another big game. Seems like every week is a big game since they re-aligned the division. We play our old friends, Imo's, @ 10pm on field #2. Last time we faced them was in the Finals on 9/4, where SSL secured a tight, hotly contested, 4-1 win. So, this will be an interesting match, to say the least. Hope to see you all there!
Scoring for the game: Edin Coralic, 2 goals; Sladan Kurtovic, 2 goals; Guillermo Cortez, 1 goal & 2 helpers; Johnny Pens, 1 & 1; David Hipperson, 1 & 1; Ronnie Rowden, 1 goal; Michael Poropat, 3, count 'em, 3 helpers; Tony Meadows, Casey Walsh & Dave Shelton, 1 helper each.

What a lot of fun. Lot's of guys we hadn't seen in years. Shoulda done this years ago. But, better late than never. Now I gotta send out some thankyou's.
President Zona! Without his help, making all the arrangements, financially & otherwise, we would not have been able to utilize the beautiful banquet room of the Bocce Club. Zone, thank's brother. I think I can speak for everyone when I say everyone didn't just have a good time, they had a great time.
Steve Rankin! Folks, the food was like no wedding reception or banquet event I've ever seen. I'm not exactly sure what all was there, but there was lot's of it. Let me see if I can find his menu. You need to know what you ate. Found it! Pork loin smothered in demi glaze; chicken flamingo & picate sauce; crushed potato casserole; cornbread stuffing; pan seared vegetable medley; tossed salad w/ranch or italian, & the perfect complement for cold beer, sweet berry muffins. Pretty typical for what we bar b q in the parking lot after games. Right!!! Brother, that was way over the top. Thanks.
The music! "Singularity", composed of Jimmy Barton & Jayson Adelsberger, worked hard to put together the evenings entertainment. They had been practicing for months to entertain you & entertain you they did. Played for better than 3 hours. But what put them over the top was the fog machine. I thought Michael Jackson was going to jump out on stage thru the fog at any moment. Thanks, boys.
The girls behind the bar! Did anybody have to wait for drinks? Don't think so. Got to the point, all I had to do was enter the room & another beverage was waiting for me on the bar. Thanks girls. We all appreciated your hard work.
I've gotta send a shout out to Monica & Susan Zona. Those girls were hawkin' everybody, chasing them around the banquet room to get them to put their names & e mail addresses on the sign in sheet. Everyone kept walkin' in the wrong door! Without them retrieving your e mail address, you won't get the e mail for this blog or the party photos next week. Great job, girls. Thanks!
Lastly, I've gotta thank the folks that actually attended the party. Obviously, without you, it's just me & Zone having beverages at the bar. It was great to see so many faces that I haven't seen in such a long time. I was telling anyone who would listen, & that wasn't many, that what spawned the idea for the party is that, back in the day, when we all played together, we saw each other at least once a week, & sometimes more, & many times, travelled out of town on a variety of road trips. Then, for one reason or another, they stopped playing & we stopped seeing them. Guys that had become brothers, just dropped off the face of the earth. It was time to stop that broken record. Time for a reunion!
So, again, thanks to all that contributed, showed up & had a good time. We'll just have to do it again! |

SSL 8, PLS ZOOM 2
SSL PICKS UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF
OPEN SESSION WITH WIN OVER ZOOM
Well, there's good news & bad news. The good news? Obviously the win over our rivals PLS Zoom. The bad news? We play them again on October 16th. Think they'll be looking for payback?
In what was billed as a potentially tight, hard-fought, hotly contested game between these two in this heated rivalry, turned out to be something less. Hard fought? Yes. Hotly contested? Yes. Tight? No. SSL jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a very nice finish in the box after making a couple moves past Zoom defenders, by Michael Poropat in his first game back after taking a session off. Then, super sub Joe Tarticchio, also behind the defense in the box, finished off a nice play to up the score quickly to 2-0.
Again, with SSL pressing the attack & getting behind the Zoom defense, Otto Etzel pushed the lead to 3-0, with an excellent effort inside the red line, by pushing the ball past the keeper. At that point, the SSL offense was in full stride. They continued to press the attack, forcing the Zoom to defend rather than attack & that resulted in yet another goal, this one by Guillermo Cortez, on one of his patented runs down the sideline & then finishing on a wicked, bad angle bomb, upping the score to 4-0 & that's the way the half ended.
The 2nd half was much the same. Otto Etzel netted his 2nd goal of the evening, again on an excellent effort down low, making the score 5-0. Shortly thereafter, David Hipperson chipped in with his 1st goal of the game to up the score to 6-0. Most normal thinking people would think that this game was in the bank. However, we weren't playing The Little Sisters of the Poor, this was PLS Zoom. A team that possesses a high-powered attack, great team speed & excellent skill. You give them any room at all, & they're off to the races. This game was far from over. That was evident over the next 5 minutes.
After racing to a 6-0 lead, the Zoom reorganized & pressed the attack. One of their forwards broke free of the oppressive marking that SSL was applying, raced down the field, eluded a final defender & let loose witha 15 yard bomb that found its way past the outstretched arms of keeper Dave Shelton, & into the lower right corner, making the score 6-1.
Relentless pressure over the next five minutes found the Zoom with a flurry of shots, many blocked by SSL defenders, the others saved or knocked wide by Dave Shelton, But, the SSL side couldn't clear the ball our of their own end or gain possession. The Zoom continued to press the attack. This game was far from over. Did I say that already???
Forcing the SSL side to clear the ball into their own net, resulted in a corner for the Zoom. Bang!!! Just like that, in a span of 2 minutes, the Zoom pulled to within 6-2 of SSL. The pressure was on. The Zoom is perfectly capable of scoring 4 or 5 goals in the 10 minutes left in the game. This game was far from over. I already said that, didn't I!
Then, on a quick counter, again the SSL forwards found themselves with space on the offensive end, & Johnny Pens netted a huge goal on a great shot from just inside the box into the lower right hand corner, pushing the score to 7-2. That took a lot of the wind out of the Zoom sails. Shortly after the 7th goal, Guillermo Cortez scored his 2nd of the game, again on his patented bad angle shot, to up the score to 8-2 & that was the final.
Particular note needs to be paid to the defenders & mid-fielders in this game. Not only did they add to the scoring with assists on 4 of the goals, but they continued their stellar marking & defense, limiting a tremendously talented offensive team like the Zoom to 2 goals & a handful of shots. Without them, there wouldn't be 8 goals scored.
Scoring for the evening were: Guillermo Cortez & Otto Etzel each with 2 goals & 2 helpers; David Hipperson & Joe Tarticchio each with 1 & 1; Johnny Pens & Michael Poropat each with a goal; Tony Meadows with 2 helpers & Mike Hogan with 1 helper.
This coming week, SSL has a bye, & won't play till the following week, 9/25 @ 8:55 against the Buckshots. See you then.
DON'T FORGET!!!

SSL 4, IMO'S 1 & TONI'S TIGERS 6, TIE ONE ON 5, IN OT.
SSL SWOOPS TO YET ANOTHER TITLE
3RD TITLE IN LAST 4 SESSIONS
Another nail-biter! In this hard fought game vs Imo's, you couldn't relax until the clock read zero. A great team like Imo's is not to be underestimated. With the score 4-1 late in the game, you didn't dare relax or take them lightly. They are the kind of team that can score quickly & often. Even though there was a 3 goal lead, late in the 2nd half, SSL didn't stop playing hard or creatively. If you give Imo's anything, they score a goal, it's 4-2, then another quick goal would make it 4-3, & we've all been there before. You don't want to do that. Particularly with a great offensive squad like Imo's.
So, SSL kept the pressure on thruout the game, holding the high-powered Imo's side to one goal, & closed out their 3rd championship in the last 4 sessions, with a tight, 4-1 win in last Thursdays finals at Concord.
The SSL side had to use a different approach in this match. The last time SSL met Imo's, on 8/21, Imo's walked away with an impressive, one sided 7-3 win, stopping the SSL winning streak @ 5 games. So, obviously, something had to change for this match, or it would have resulted in a repeat of the previous encounter. In the previous meeting, the SSL side seemed lethargic. For those of you that don't know what lethargic means, it can be loosely described as slow & disinterested.
They weren't running, marking or playing aggressively or physically. This match was different. It was end to end action from beginning to end. They ran, they marked, they challenged every ball. They created a lot of offense & it was only due to the strong Imo's defense that SSL didn't score more goals.
SSL started quickly, just as they had in their previous meeting, with Eden Coralic, & a great effort in the box, pushing the ball past the Imo's keeper for an early 1-0 lead. A bit later in the half, Ronnie Rowden connected on another chance in the box when, with the keeper out of position, knocked the ball into the net, thru the legs of a startled keeper for a 2-0 lead.
This was erie because in the previous match, SSL went up 2-0 only to end up losing. Each SSL player was aware of that fact & they were determined not to have a repeat of that performance. They didn't! Even when Imo's scored on a breakaway to halve the score to 2-1, SSL didn't break stride, continuing to pour on the pressure, & that pressure again had positive results. Guillermo Cortez pushed the lead back to a 2 goal cushion with another of his patented bad angle bombs, giving the SSL side a 3-1 half-time lead. A lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The SSL defense stiffened even more in the 2nd half, withstanding a 5 minute period in which they couldn't get control of the ball nor get it out of their end. Excellent goal keeping, again, by Dave Shelton & an excellent defensive effort by the whole team, in getting back to pick up the opponents, thwarted any Imo's efforts & ultimately lead to a 2nd goal by Guillermo Cortez, upping the score to 4-1 & that was the way the game ended, with SSL holding Imo's scoreless for the entire half. As someone once told me, you can never have too much ice or too many championships. This will add another to the ever expanding SSL trophy case. Congrats to the SSL side. See you next session!
Scoring: Guillermo Cortez, 2 goals; Ronnie Rowden & Edin Coralic with 1 goal each; Casey Walsh, Bernard Anic, Mike Hogan & goalie Dave Shelton, each with 1 helper.
Congratulations to David Hipperson, leading the scoring for the entire SSL side with 30 points, followed closely by Guillermo Cortez with 29. The entire final standings & stats follow the pics.
Kudos also to the SSL defensive side of the ball. For the 8th session in a row, they lead the league in fewest goals allowed. They scored 52 goals in 8 games, allowing only 23, for a differential of an amazing 29. To put that in perspective, their closest competitor scored 34, allowed 28 & had a differential of 6. Another great job by the "D".

BACK ROW: Tony Meadows; Edin Coralic; Guillermo Cortez; Casey Walsh & Otto Etzel.
2nd ROW: Ronnie Rowden; Jayson Adelsberger; David Shelton; Mike Hogan & Sladan Kurtovic.

TONI'S TIGERS DO IT AGAIN
WIN OT THRILLER TO SECURE CHAMPIONSHIP
What a game it was! And what is truly amazing is how they got to the finals to begin with. Following the finish of the regular season, the Tigers found themselves in a 2nd place tie, not only with one team, but two teams. Based on goals allowed (this is THE most important part of a game), the Tigers advanced past the two others & secured a berth in the finals against the undefeated, Tie One On side.
The game was a classic chess match, with each team getting offensive opportunities often. The Tigers scored 1st. Then Tie One On, & back & forth & so on & so forth. The score went from 1-0, to 1-1. Then 2-1 Tigers, then 2-2. Then 3-2 Tigers, then 3-3. Then, Tie One On took the lead for the 1st time in the game at 4-3, but the resilient Tigers came back, tied it up @ 4-4.
This is when it really got interesting. Lot's of folks in the stands were watching this one. Late in the game, Tie One On took a 5-4 lead, & it looked grim for the Tigers. However, with time ticking off the clock, & down to about 40 seconds to go, the Tigers tied the game & forced overtime.
In the 5 minute overtime, with about 2 minutes left, one of the Tiger forwards broke down the left sideline with the ball, veered toward the goal, let go with a bomb that whistled past the startled Tie One On keeper, for a thrilling, 6-5 overtime win. A fun & entertaining game to watch, the Tigers were rewarded with a hardfought, exciting victory for yet another League Championship, just the latest one in a long history of Championships for Toni's Tigers. Congrats to all.

FC ST. LOUIS @ THE "SHOW ME" GAMES

Front Row: Steve Vitale; Dave Zanaboni; Dave Braun: Tom Simpson; Rich Wurdack; Nick Vitale & Jack Coleman. Second Row: Mark Vitale; Ed Dwyer; Paul Cummins; Glen Klipfel; Wally Stokes; Steve Frank; Chris Coyle; Eddie Muehlheausler & John Muehlheausler. FC ST. LOUIS MEDALS AT "SHOW-ME" GAMESAs they did last year, FC STL went undefeated in bracket play, posting 3 shut-outs along the way, & reached the Championship game for the second successive year. Last year, tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, they ended up losing in penalty kicks to a very tough U City team. This year, however, it was a bit different. Scoring 1st on an excellent unassisted effort by Jack Coleman, the FC STL side took an early 1-0 lead & appeared to be on their way to a win. However, the Keystone Homes team, built around Chris Caccitiore, Steve Musenfecter, Tom Malle & Eric Delabar, evened the score at 1-1 on a controversial play & then took the lead at 2-1 on another contested play that resulted in a penalty kick. Later in the 2nd half, the Keystone team scored 2 more goals to put the game out of reach in this 95 degree missouri summer heat, & took home the gold. The FC STL, for the 2nd year in a row, was awarded the silver for their 2nd place finish. Scoring for the FC STL side: Nick Vitale, Jack Coleman & Tom Simpson, 2 goals each; Eddie Muehlheausler, John Muehlheausler, Steve Vitale, & Wally Stokes, 1 goal each. See ya'll next year!!! |

SSL 8, BUCKSHOTS 3
SSL CLOSES WITH SOLID WINPLAYS FOR CHAMPIONSHIP NEXTThe 8-3 win vs. the Buckshots, put the finishing touches to another solid session by the SSL side. Finishing the regular session 6-0-1, was good for 18 points & once again, a berth in the Championship game this Thursday. The win vs. the Buckshots was a workmanlike effort, with the entire team contributing, either on offense or on defense. Once again the SSL side lead the league in fewest goals allowed at 22, although not their best effort overall, but certainly good enough for their 6th consecutive session winning that coveted defensive title. The game started quickly for SSL, finishing twice for an early 2-0 lead. But, just like last week, the opponent scored two quick goals of their own to knot the score at 2 all. But unlike last week where the opponent, Imo's, continued to score, serving SSL with their only loss of the session, this week SSL scored the 3rd goal & never looked back, en route to an 8-3 win over the always tough Buckshot side. As luck would have it, the opponent for the SSL side in the Championship game this Thursday @ 8:40 on field #1 will be none other than the same team that handed SSL their only loss of the session, Imo's. SSL has faced Imo's twice previously in Championships, winning both, by scores of 8-2 & 6-4. SSL will try to keep that particular winning streak in place. Contributing to the SSL win vs. the Buckshots were David Hipperson with 2 goals & 2 helpers; Guillermo Cortez with 3 goals; Ronnie Rowden, Sladan Kurtovic & Mike Hogan with 1 goal each & Casey Walsh, Tony Meadows & Johnny Pens, with 1 helper each.
