SOCO UTD, 6, SSL O-30, 3

NEW SESSION IN A NEW DIVISION

30'S LURCH TO OPENING LOSS

It was probably inevitable. The Soccer St. Louis O-30 mens team has had a lengthy string of successes. Since reentering the O-30 Thursday night competition in March of 2011, the 30's have done well. Very well. They've made it to the finals in six of seven sessions, winning three of those. Not bad. Not bad at all. So, it seemed inevitable that one of these days, the Vetta powers that be, would move the SSL side up into the upper division from the second of three total divisions. They played their first upper division match last Thursday versus perennial championship contender & last sessions runner up, SoCo Utd., and it didn't go well.

I don't know how many times I've written about this nagging, frustrating, repetitive problem, but here I go again. Early goals by an opponent. Very early. In fact, last Tuesday, in the Open division championship, the 40's fell behind 2-0 in the first two minutes. Thursday was a mirror image. A quick as you can say, "come from behind", the white shirts were trailing a very, very good side, 2-0. It's tough to play from behind & even more difficult to win like that.

Down 4-1 at the half & being convincingly outplayed, the white shirts picked up the pace offensively, tightened up their defensive shape & pressured SoCo from end to end in the second half. But the best they could do was get the score to 5-3 when SoCo banged home the final coffin nail with their sixth goal, collecting a 6-3 win over the white shirts. So even though Chris Gianino banged home two dead ball rockets & Casey Walsh buried a one timer from the door step of the goal, the white shirts just could not muster any more offense against the swarming SoCo defense.

But, a lesson has been learned. This is the top division in the Vetta O-30 league. All the opponents are SoCo-like. There won't be any walk-overs like there are in the middle division. If you're going to compete, you have to bring your game every week, & it needs to start at the opening whistle, not at the interval. Whether it's SoCo, Smugala's or Sinclair & Rush, you need to come ready to play. The white shirts aren't in Kansas anymore, Toto. And it only gets more difficult. Next Tuesday the white shirts will face off versus defending champion & always dangerous, Smugala's at 7:10 on field #2. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Chris Gianino, 2 goals & Casey Walsh, 1 goal.

RED STAR, 8, SSL O-40, 7

EARLY GOALS DOOM 40'S

SPECTACULAR FINISH CAN'T AVERT CHAMPIONSHIP LOSS

Entering play in this championship match, SSL had a record of 1-1 versus the Red Star side. However, that record was a bit misleading. The single win was early this session, 4-2, & the result had few consequences other than standings & an opportunity to advance to the final, which they did. However, the loss was significant. It was in the finals of last session. That was a 7-3 blowout loss that wasn't even as close as the score might indicate. The white shirts wanted to build on this sessions 4-2 win, & forget about & not allow to repeat, that nasty 7-3 loss. Well, they did & they didn't. And in spectacular fashion.

As has been the white shirts nasty habit, they continue to be slow starters & allow their opponent to score first. In fact, in last session championship versus Red Star, that in fact happened, when they allowed the Stars two goals in the first few minutes of the match, & for all intents & purposes, that match was over as they endured that ugly loss. In this, the championship match, they wanted to break that habit & get off to a quick start, getting an early tally themselves, & use that to propel them to a win. Their prayers were not answered. In fact, it was a mirror image repeat of last sessions championship.

The Stars centered off, marched down the field & in under ten seconds had a 1-0 lead. The bench players hadn't even gotten their boots tied & they were down a goal. Not the way they had it written up on the pre match chalk board. And, to add insult to injury, the white shirts centered off, the Stars stole the ball & then tallied their second goal of the match. Less then two minutes had expired since the start of the match & the white shirts found themselves down 2-0. And it got worse. Much worse.

Moments later it was 3-0. Shoulders sagged. It looked every bit as though they were going to repeat the ugly championship loss from last session in embarrassing fashion. Something positive needed to happen for the white shirts. Quickly.

Ryan Curry provided a bit of a jump start with a tally, a bullet from just outside the Star penalty area, narrowing the score to 3-1. A bit more livable for the white shirts, but surely, a tall hill to climb. Not only did they need to score goals, they needed to stop the Stars. And they hadn't been successful at that thus far. Not even close. Again, they needed something good to happen.

Instead, the Stars banged home two more tallys to stretch & increase their lead to a daunting 5-1 and minutes were bleeding quickly off the clock, & they were closing in on the interval. They needed a miracle. They got one. Well, not quite. But, pretty close.

In short order, the white shirts converted three straight attempts, the last with just 15 seconds left in the half to close the score to 5-4. Beautiful! That immediately got them back in the match & gave each player an instant shot of adrenalin. A tally by Kevin Vonarx, his first of three on the evening, closed it to 5-2 when he beat several defenders in the left corner & deposited a rocket in the back of the Star goal. Then a tally by Patrick Curry made it 5-3, another bomb, this one from outside the penalty area as well. But the remarkable tally was the final of the half. Vonarx stole the ball from a single defender, caught trying to clear the ball, stepped around him & headed toward the Star goal with just the keeper to beat. With just ten seconds left in the half, he beat the keeper, tallied his second & closed the score to 5-4. With that finish, several things happened.

It infused the white shirts with confidence. It made the Stars uneasy. They watched their four goal cushion evaporate & require them to once again reengage their offensive engine & try to win the second half as well as hold off the suddenly potent SSL offense. But most importantly, it motivated the white shirts. They could forget about that forgettable first half & its quirky Red Star goals & concentrate on ramping up their game, tying the match & then, hopefully, forging ahead for the win. A tough challenge to be sure, but they were up for it. Unfortunately for the white shirts, the Stars came out for the second half, equally amped up to protect their lead & collect some add on tallys.

No sooner had the second half started then the Stars found the back of the SSL goal once again, grabbing a two goal lead at 6-4. Frustrating. All that hard work late in the first half goes up in smoke in just a matter of a few seconds. However, down 6-4 is a lot better than being down 6-1. The white shirts kept their confidence & their shape. The patience paid off.

Defender Mike Hogan went on a rampage. Well, it was a mini rampage, but it kept the white shirts in the match. Unmarked to the left of the goal, Hogan banged home a toe ball to pull the white shirts to within one at 6-5. But what was really frustrating for the white shirts was their inability to stop the Red Star offensive machine & their uncanny ability to respond to a white shirt tally with one of their own. Almost immediately, after a hard earned SSL tally, the Stars would bang home one of their own, increasing the frustration on the white shirt bench. So, after Hogan pulled the white shirts within one at 6-5, the Stars came right back just a minute later with one of their own, boosting their lead again to two at 7-5.

Hogan answered for the white shirts again. This time on the right side of the penalty area, again unmarked, he coaxed the Star keeper off his line who was trying to cut down the angle. But again, with yet another toe poke, he pushed a knuckler past the keeper, again narrowing the Star lead to one at 7-6. And time was becoming the SSL enemy. It was bleeding off the clock even more quickly now. It was down to four minutes left in this championship. Something had to happen, & quickly. It did, but for the wrong side. Yet again, for the umpteenth time, the Stars answered the SSL goal with one of their own, stretching the lead back to two at 8-6. The white shirts just could not hold off the Star offense. It was to be their undoing. But, the finish would not be without some fireworks.

Vonarx, for the third time in the match, tallied for the white shirts, getting them back to within one at 8-7. There were still three minutes left. Could they do it? The white shirts made a couple late substitutions, & were swarming all over the Stars. They pushed the ball up into the Stars defensive third & peppered the goal with shots. But the Stars were bending, not breaking. Shot after shot rang out. Block after block turned aside those shots. The white shirts passed the ball quickly around the perimeter, looking for the open man. But the Stars were up to the challenge, cutting down the angles, staying marked & giving few shooting lanes for the white shirts. And whatever shots were able to get through, were caught or turned aside by the keeper. As time ran out, a final long shot clanged off the Star crossbar & thudded harmlessly onto the turf as the Stars dodged a bullet, hung on & were rewarded with their second straight championship win, & the white shirts were handed their second straight championship loss. But it was a hell of a match,

So, although the white shirts came up short, they avoided the kind of collapse they suffered in last sessions final & instead, turned in a gutsy, thrilling & entertaining performance. It was "edge of your seat" entertainment. They acquitted themselves well. As for Red Star, they played a marvelous match, sagging on defense, possessing the ball with crisp passing & were professionally opportunistic on offense. When they had the chance, they didn't miss.

As for the white shirts? You just have to wonder what may have happened if they hadn't given up those first two goals in the first two minutes. Would the outcome have been different? You just never know. See you next session. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Kevin Vonarx, 3 goals; Mike Hogan, 2 goals; Ryan & Patrick Curry, 1 goal each; Tony Meadows & Casey Walsh, 1 helper each.

SSL O-30, 6, ARSENAL, 4

SHORTHANDED 30'S PREVAIL

SNAG 2ND PLACE FROM LACKLUSTER SESSION

It was not the way a defending champ likes to start a session. The first match versus the new team in the division, Red Bulls, the eventual session champion, was lackluster, to say the least. The white shirts were not ready for this match. Missing several key players & coupled with a less than prolific performance versus the highly motivated Bulls, who were playing their very first match, resulted in a 7-3 drubbing. Certainly a depressing way to start the new session. But, not to worry. Just win the rest & they'd have another crack at the Bulls, & hopefully with a full squad. It was not to be.

On the heels of the Bulls loss, the white shirts coughed up yet another guber, losing 3-1 to lowly Zoom, the eventual 6th place finisher, on the white shirts nemesis field, #3. That field for some reason adversely affects the SSL performance. And to only score a single goal on that shooting gallery of a field, well, it's just hard to figure. The white shirts just play much better on the bigs.

So, with two straight losses to start the session, the chance for another, 6th straight trip to the championship, seemed pretty slim. Not impossible, but, pretty grim. SSL would have to take care of their own business & hope for some help. They could start by helping themselves the following week with a match versus the team, other than the Bulls, that everyone thought to be a championship contender, Hoosier FC. If they could beat Hoosier & then they went on to win the rest of their matches & the Bulls beat all of their opponents, the white shirts could conceivably see a path to the finals.

Well, as it turns out, the white shirts put a spanking on Hoosier, with a 7-2 beat down, rewarding SSL with their first win of the session, & a record of 1-2. Now all they had to do was keep winning & hope that the Bulls & Hoosier did as well.

The Bulls & Hoosier took care of business, winning the matches that SSL needed them to win. But the back breaker to the session was the white shirts next match. It was against old adversaries, Freaky Shakra, on that field, #3. Good things don't happen to SSL on that field. And this match was no different. It was unbelievable!

The white shirts jumped out to a 5-2 half time lead. Everyone thought that SSL had this match versus the last place team in the bag. No one told Freaky. They ripped off 9 straight second half tallys, winning the match 11-7 and for all intents & purposes, ending any chance the white shirts would return to the finals. It was gut wrenching.

What is even more ironic is, Hoosier FC lost to the Red Bulls 7-5 in the finals. Hoosier ended up with a 4-1-3 record to SSL 5-3, so the white shirts actually ended up in 2nd place, without ever playing in the finals. Let us all just forget about this session. Instead, we should be asking, what the heck just happened?! Well folks, that's why they play the games.

As if to put a capper on the entire session & to perfectly portray how imperfect the session played out, in the playoff for 3rd place, the white shirts faced off against Arsenal. It did not start well for the white shirts at all. At the opening whistle, they had only 4 field players, adding one a moment later. So, at least they had 5. About 10 minutes into the match, 2 more players showed up, so at least they had some subs. In a match that they certainly should have lost, they played like wild men, & the champions they are.

They played a beautiful defensive match, limiting the numerically superior Arsenal side offensively & scored the first 2 tallys of the match. Keeper Tony Meadows, the one constant for the SSL side for the session, never missing a match, was the great neutralizer, turning aside or stopping outright, the few chances Arsenal had in the SSL end. The white shirts pumped in 6 while allowing 4, registering their 5th win of the session to go along with 3 losses. But of those 3 losses, the most telling was the loss to Freaky. It broke their back & took them out of the race. So, this win versus Arsenal was a hollow reward, much like the 2nd place finish.

Now they must focus on next session, putting behind them this nightmare of a session. But, if the white shirts want another trip to the championship, one might suggest they come ready to play so they don't lose the first two matches of next session. Thanks for reading.

 Match Scoring:  Jamie Perryman, 2 goals & a helper; Greg Gilsinn & Chris Gianino, 1 & 1 & Jeremy Maue, 1 goal.

SSL O-40, 9, THE WHITES, 6

WHITE SHIRTS FALL BEHIND EARLY

COMEBACK RESULTS IN CHAMPIONSHIP BERTH

For the 3rd time in their four straight sessions in the Men's Open Division, the Soccer St. Louis side has secured a berth in the Championship match. But it wasn't without some heart wrenching moments & more than a little trepidation.

Two weeks ago on 4/24, the white shirts entered their match with 2nd place Ambush sporting an undefeated 5-0 record. Unfortunately, that match took place on field #3, not the most kind of pitches to the SSL side over the years. Certainly they've won many matches there, but it is a difficult field for them to play. It seems they're always playing uphill & against the wind. And this is indoors!!!

Anyway, in that match they fell behind quickly & the avalanche continued to the extent that they found themselves behind at the half, 6-1! It looked over, but it wasn't. Unfortunately, their miracle comeback came up one tally short in a 7-6 loss, resulting in a 1st place tie between them & the Ambush. However, since 3rd place Red Star was still 2 points behind, all SSL had to do was win their final match versus last place, 0-6, The Whites. Easy, right? Not so much.

The Whites were going to have something to say about the outcome of this contest. Even though they were in last, this was their league championship, & they played like it. Meanwhile, the SSL side looked as if they entered this match on cruise control, played lethargically & found themselves behind 1-0 in the early minutes of the match. Well, not to worry. They'll get it back. And they did. But someone forgot to text The White side that they were playing the 1st place team. Those young boys came out running and gunning & didn't quit. Much to the distress of the SSL side.

The teams traded tallys until SSL took a two goal lead at 6-4. But The Whites came right back to make it 6-5. Then it was 7-5 SSL. Then it was 7-6. The Whites wouldn't stop, quit or go away. They were running & running & running, almost making the SSL side look befuddled at times. But, good things come to those who wait. The offensive & defensive patience shown by the SSL side paid off in the end, pulling away for a 9-6 win. But a win in this match, about midway through, looked shaky. But nevertheless, the SSL side pulled it out, dodging that irritating bullet known as The Whites, & again secured a spot in the finals, their 3rd in the last 4 sessions.

Interestingly, 3rd place Red Star played 2nd place Ambush that same night for the other spot in the finals, & slapped a 7-3 spanking on them. That means, for the 2nd session in a row, Red Star & SSL will meet in the championship, next Tuesday on field #2 at 8:50. SSL hopes the outcome is different this time around. Last session the Red Star side totally dominated the white shirts in a 7-3 drubbing. SSL hopes to turn the tables on Red Star this time around & notch a championship win. Adding to the confidence of SSL is an early season 4-2 win over Red Star. But that was then & this is now. We shall see. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  David Hipperson, 3 goals & 2 helpers; Kevin Vonarx, 2 & 2; Patrick Curry, 2 & 1; Joel Knoll & Ryan Curry, 1 & 2 & Gianni Pens, 1 helper.

SSL O-40, 6, WASSABI, 5

VONARX LAST SECOND TALLY TRIPS WASSABI

40'S STRETCH RECORD TO 5-0

Fresh off a convincing 9-2 win the week before Easter versus The Whites, & with the entire week off to rest up for a rematch versus Wassabi, a match won by SSL 10-7 in week #1, one would have thought the white shirts, at 5-0 on the session, would come out brimming with confidence & dispatch the Wassabi side handily. Wrong! This was a trap game.

Wassabi entered the match featuring only a single win against three losses. Again one would have thought, put your money on the first place team. Well folks, that's why they play the games. Actually, it all started well for the white shirts. Then the wheels came off the wagon.

Kevin Vonarx got things started early for SSL, tallying for a 1-0 lead. But some back and forth ate up time on the clock as the white shirts tried vainly to extend their lead. Their inability for add on tallys cost them, as the Wassabi side struck pay dirt & tied the score at 1. But, not to worry. The white shirts were playing well, just missing on some chances. Those chances started to pay off.

Gianni Pens broke the tie with a tally & then Steve Rankin added that all important add on goal, making it a comfortable 3-1 lead for the white shirts. I'm certain that most players would have said at the time, they thought this match was in the bag. As it turned out, it was far from it. When Rankin scored his goal, there was but 3 minutes & change left in the half. In that period of time & following a tremendous loss of focus & a large helping of lolly gagging, the Wassabi's cranked in 3 tallys of their own for a shocking 4-3 lead at the interval. What the heck just happened?! It was game on.

Wassabi was energized & were bringing it. The white shirts meanwhile, were having difficulty getting back on that horse. They were slow out of the gate at the start of the 2nd half & seemed to be running up hill. That would continue for the duration of the match. But then Vonarx leveled the score at 4-4 with his 2nd tally of the match. There was an audible sigh of relief on the white shirt bench. A moment ago they were struggling, down one. They were now tied. They were back in the match. But once again, the Wassabi crew took the wind out of their sails with yet another tally. This Wassabi bunch would not quit, go away or buckle under the increasing white shirt pressure. They were playing like the division champs they were last session. Very quickly SSL realized they had their hands full. Their undefeated session was in serious jeopardy.

The bad news continued. Wassabi tallied once again, regaining the lead at 5-4. The white shirts were having all kinds of problems keeping up with the relentless attack of Wassabi, marking their men & blocking their shots. With a 5-4 lead, Wassabi was looking for the knockout punch. They wanted to put the white shirts away, once & for all. Then Todd Loretta, coming out of his defensive position, evened the score yet again with a nice tally from just inside the white line, restoring some sanity to this out of control match. Again, for the 4th time on the evening, the match was tied. And there was a lot of time left. Almost 10 minutes. A lot could happen.

Each team was dodging bullets for those 10 minutes. Wassabi was a handful. They were marking, running 'n gunning & generally creating havoc for both the SSL offense & defense. Goalie Tony Meadows acrobatics kept the white shirts in the match. Neither team could find the back of the net in those last 10 minutes. As the old Bulova wound down to about 20 seconds remaining, it looked very much like the white shirts would have to settle for a tie. They would have been happy to take that at this point.

But Vonarx found himself in the left corner of the Wassabi defense, up against the wall, marked by multiple defenders, with the ball. A white shirt or two would make a run towards him & past him, to open up some space. He took advantage. He dribbled out of the corner, past a couple defenders & across the top of the penalty area. The keeper committed. That was all he needed. He hit a bomb with his right that rocketed into the bottom left corner of the Wassabi goal, just out of reach of the diving keeper, giving the white shirts the lead at 6-5 for the first time since 3 minutes remained in the first half. There were but 5 seconds left on the clock. Amazing.

The white shirts dodged a huge bullet. They had visions of a vanished undefeated record & perhaps a fall from 1st place dancing before their eyes. It was that close. But 3 first half goals added to 3 second half goals, not the least of which was the spectacular final tally by Vonarx with but 5 ticks left on the clock, versus 5 for the stubborn Wassabi side, saved the day. The SSL record was still unblemished.

Now the white shirts have even more work cut out for them in the form of the 2nd place Ambush side. They'll meet them on everyone's favorite field, #3, at 9:25, in a battle for 1st place & a berth in the championship. Let's just hope the Wassabi crew doesn't give the Ambush any tactical tips. The white shirts have had their fill of the Wassabi's, so they certainly don't want to play them for a second time in the form of the Ambush. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-40, 4, RED STAR, 2

CLASH OF THE HEAVYWEIGHTS

WHITE SHIRTS PREVAIL, REMAIN IN 1ST

These two sides have faced each other many times, whether their team name was Maddox or their most recent incarnation, Red Star. The last time they met was in last sessions championship, where Red Star won, going away, 7-3. Earlier in that session, the two met in what could be called a championship warm-up, with Red Star winning that one as well, in electrifying fashion, 9-8, in the last 30 seconds. These two sides are very familiar with one another & the expectations for this rematch, if you will, were high. Everyone thought this match would see both sides trading hay makers & pushing each other to the brink. They did not disappoint.

Both teams entered the match, tied for 1st with 2-0 records. However, SSL technically was in 2nd, based on point differential. Red Star had scored 16 to SSL 18, but had the advantage on the goals against at 7 to SSL 13, for a differential lead of 9 to 5. Red Star had defeated Jerrys Kids 10-5 & the Ambush, 6-2. Meanwhile, the white shirts had defeated Wassabi 10-7 & the common denominator, Jerry's Kids, 8-6. This match had all the makings of a low scoring, tightly played match with the emphasis on defense. It was.

A bad habit the white shirts have fallen into recently, is giving up early goals, in each half. I'm not going to go back reconcile all the matches this has happened in for you. Just suffice to say, it has. Many times. In agonizing fashion. In fact, the last two contests with Red Star, the white shirts spotted them 2-0 leads in the first two minutes of the match. You're not going to win many matches like that. The white shirts didn't.

However, on this night, the white shirts didn't give up a goal in the first couple minutes of the match. How about that! Unfortunately, they waited til the 17th minute to give it up. Well, that's an improvement in & of itself. So, the white shirts found themselves down 1-0 early in the contest, again. But tonight was different. Not only did they not give up a second goal for a 2-0 Red Star lead, but, surprise, surprise, the white shirts tallied one of their own, just one minute later in spectacular fashion.

David Hipperson got the white shirt engine running smoothly, instead of the coughing & sputtering they had done to open the match. Edin Coralic had collected the ball around midfield & pushed up into the Red Star defensive third. Tightly marked, Coralic delivered the ball to Hipperson, slipping quietly from his midfield position deep into the right corner of the Red Star zone. He deftly stepped around a defender & blasted a low hard shot that zipped into the bottom right corner of the goal for the white shirt first tally of the match, tying it at 1-1.

That tally, coming just one minute after the Red Star tally, gave the SSL side a jolt of confidence. To that point in the match, they had been on the defensive. The Red Star bunch are a seasoned, veteran side, dangerous in all facets of the game & possess a lethal offense. They know how to take advantage & press the attack when favorable situations occur. Whenever there was a SSL turnover, they'd launch into attack mode, usually with at least four players. They were adept at finishing, & if you made a mistake, they'd make you pay. To that point, the white shirt defense was bending, but not breaking. And the Hipperson tally, leveling the score, saw the white shirts ramp up their own attack.

With the score 1-1, both sides were taking turns attacking the others goal. The Stars would come in waves, using their keeper, many times, as a sixth attacker. A lot of pressure was put on the white shirt defense & keeper Tony Meadows, but to that point, they were up for the challenge. Back and forth, back and forth. Both teams shared the possession & shots were about even. It was any ones game at that point. Then, on a nifty play, the white shirts snatched the lead.

Hipperson, a whirling dervish all match long, pushed up with the ball from his midfield position. Angling for a shot, the Star defenders were closing it down. Instead, he found Steve Rankin in the box, & not tightly marked. He slotted him the ball & Rankin turned with the ball &, standing just a few feet away, on the goal line, was Gianni Pens. He tapped the ball to the unguarded Pens & he turned with the ball & did a nifty back heel, & the ball rolled into the Star goal. That tally gave the white shirts their first lead of the match at 2-1. However, it seemed as if they hadn't even completed their back slapping & high fives when the Stars slapped them back to reality with a tally of their own just 15 seconds later. The euphoria of their one goal lead fizzled in a couple of heartbeats. Disappointed with that unfortunate turn of events, the white shirts rode the 2-2 score to the interval. At least they could take some comfort in the tie considering they were playing one of the most powerful scoring machines in the league. They were still in it. They still had a chance.

The second half was far different than the first. The white shirts started taking more of the possession & getting more of the opportunities. They started getting more counter opportunities. They were running n gunning & the Star defenders were slow getting back. This created a lot of space for the constant attack of the white shirts & it resulted in a flurry of shots. The Star keeper was on his game, however, & nothing easy was going to get by. It was work, work, work for the white shirts.

The SSL defensive shape was starting to come together even more. It may well have been one of the best defensive matches the white shirts had played in some time. In fact, players were hard pressed to remember a better defensive effort. They constantly had three players back, & often times, four & sometimes five, severely curtailing the Star attack. However, make no mistake, the Star is an attacking machine. They kept bringing it. Many of their sorties were blocked or stripped by the defenders, & those few that got thru, were defended brilliantly by keeper Meadows. In fact, at one point, the Stars were playing keep away with the ball in the SSL defensive third. The white shirts were caught ball watching instead of marking & a Star forward, stationed in the corner, found an unmarked teammate in the middle of the box & delivered a crisp pass. The Star forward one timed it and blistered a shot. It was right at Meadows. The white shirts had just dodged a huge bullet with the score tied at 2.

On the offense, the white shirts continued to play the ball to Meadows & he did a marvelous job distributing. In fact, the white shirt third tally of the match was on just such a connection. Meadows, collecting the ball off an errant Red Star shot, came up throwing, & threw a long ball to a jetting Kevin Vonarx, who had slipped behind a defender. He collected the ball & turned to the goal with the defender in hot pursuit. Instead of carrying the ball any closer, he just let it fly. It was a dart! It zoomed into the bottom left corner of the Star goal & that gave the lead back to the white shirts at 3-2. And Meadows didn't stop there. The white shirt forwards & midfielders, were constantly running behind the Star defenders & Meadows would let it fly. The Vonarx connection was the only one of the night for him, but there were at least two others that the Star keeper had to make critical saves on. The white shirts were wanting more.

It almost became a game of keep away. The white shirts would play the ball back to Meadows who in turn would always find the open man. Once he delivered that ball, the white shirts were in attack mode. The later it got in the match, the more space the white shirts had & the more opportunities. On one such play, defender Mike Hogan, running out of the back with the ball, found Vonarx down low, near the Star penalty area, & he delivered him the ball. Vonarx did the rest. Stepping around one defender, he teed it up, & fired a ball past the diving keeper & into the bottom right corner of the goal. But, there were still eight minutes left in the match. A lot of time. And the Red Star side can score goals in bunches. It was no time to relax. They didn't.

Up 4-2, the white shirts continued to play keep away. If Red Star didn't have the ball, they couldn't score. That seemed like a good prescription. They continued it. Time dripped slowly off the old Timex, as the Red Stars applied heavy pressure. But it finally approached all zeros & the white shirts locked up another win, & held onto first place, barely. It certainly was a white knuckle finish all the way to the end. But it was a great match by two great teams, fully entertaining, & up for grabs until only a few minutes remained.

If both teams continue to win matches, which is the way it looks, it would be a given, that they'll meet once more this session......, in the championship. So, stay tuned for that. If it does come to pass & these two sides meet again in the championship, it will be more of the same. Both sides with something to prove.

Next up for the white shirts is a new team in the league, The Whites. SSL will meet them at 9:40 on field #2. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Kevin Vonarx, 2 goals; David Hipperson & Gianni Pens, 1 goal each; Edin Coralic, Mike Hogan, Tony Meadows & Steve Rankin, 1 helper each.

SSL O-30, 7, HOOSIER FC, 2

GILSINN'S RETURN SPARKS 30'S

WHITE SHIRTS POST 1ST WIN OF SESSION

After something of a lackluster start, to put it mildly, the SSL side finally notched their first win after posting two opening session losses in a row. The white shirt ship has finally been righted!

The win was due, in a large part, to two players. The return of Greg Gilsinn after a two session hiatus & the dominant performance by keeper Tony Meadows. Gilsinn lead the charge with three tallys & two helpers, while Meadows, although facing a minimal number of shots, kept the white shirts in the match & kept it close with two high profile stops early when the outcome was still in question. With these two leading the way, the rest of the white shirts stepped up their game & turned in a dominating display for the match.

However, things actually didn't start that well. Jamie Perryman got SSL off to a quick start with a finish into the bottom right corner of the Hoosier goal off a pass from Gilsinn. But some lackluster defending & forwards slow to get back, gave that tally right back, as the Hoosier side tied it up. That tally must have awakened the troops because they went on a three unanswered goal tear that gave them a 4-1 advantage at the interval, on tallys by Chris Gianino, Gilsin & a second from Perryman. The white shirts were on their game.

SSL started controlling the ball & therefore the play, with crisp passing to the appropriate color shirt, smothering defense as the midfielders & forwards came back to help the defenders & this play resulted in shots. Lots of them. They kept the Hoosier side at bay most of the contest, denying them the ball & frustrating their pass work, picking off pass after pass. This style of play continued into the second half.

Gianino tallied his second of the evening & Gilsinn finished off the scoring with two more of his own while the Hoosier side tallied a meaningless window dressing tally late in the match, resulting in the final score of 7-2. So, on the heels of two lackluster performances in their first two contests of the session, the white shirts turned in a solid, confidence building effort against a powerful and dangerous opponent in the Hoosiers, the championship match opponent for the white shirts just two sessions ago. This same effort was sadly lacking in their two previous matches, both losses.

So now they're back in the hunt. However, it is a tall task that awaits them. They can have no more "mulligans". Another loss & the thought of a sixth consecutive trip to the finals would disappear. Additionally, they have to depend on other teams to defeat other contenders so that, should the white shirts go on a winning streak, they'd have an opportunity to gain a 1st or 2nd place finish. The deck is stacked against them. We shall see.

But, regarding their performance in this match, there was no question, they were hitting on all cylinders. Their defensive shape was consistent & smothering. The offense was constant & at times unstoppable. And the goal keeping? As usual, spectacular. All in all, a complete & dominant performance. It was a pleasure to watch. It's just a shame it wasn't around for the first two contests.

Next up will an interesting contest. The white shirts kick off versus Freaky Shakra next Thursday in a late one at 10:15 on their old favorite, field #3. The reason it'll be interesting is that Freaky typically is in the lower half of the standings, which is interesting in & of itself because they always field a dangerous side, but for whatever reason, they lack consistency. As it turns out, the only blemish on last sessions record, on their way to yet another championship, was a 7-5 loss to this same Freaky Shakra bunch. You just never know. Let's just hope the white shirts show up with the side that played match #3 & not the side that played in matches #1 & 2. Hope to see you then. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring: Greg Gilsinn, 3 goals & 2 helpers; Chris Gianino, 2 goals & 1 helper; Jamie Perryman, 2 goals; Jeremy Maue, 2 helpers & Joe Sharamitaro & Casey Walsh, 1 helper each.

SSL O-40, 8, JERRY'S KIDS, 6

COMEBACK VICTORY!

40'S SNATCH WIN FROM JAWS OF DEFEAT

It all started out normal enough. The white shirts gave up a goal in the first minute of the match to fall behind 1-0. It's a nasty habit that has a nasty habit of reappearing all the time. Did I just repeat myself? Anyway, over the past umpteen sessions, SSL continuously gives up a goal, or two, in the first minute of the match. They follow that up with, on most occasions, a goal in the first minute of the second half as well, which nicely sandwiches the first half. They did not disappoint on this night.

So, after falling behind 1-0 in the first minute, only a minute later, Kevin Vonarx, who had to leave the match moments later with an ugly ankle sprain that happened on a vicious tackle from behind & was swollen before he left the pitch, tied the match at 1 on his second attempt of the contest.

But, quick as a wink, the offensively talented side, Jerry's Kids, notched their second less than a minute later to grab back the lead at 2-1. The white shirt defense was in disarray. Probably because to start the match, they had no subs & a substitute goalie. The Kids were running 'n gunning. They were pressuring the white shirt defenders & in fact, the entire side, hemming them in their own end. The white shirts were unable to collect or possess the ball, string together any passes & were running amuck, playing at an unfriendly frenetic pace. It would continue.

However, Edin Coralic leveled the score with his first of two on the evening, to go along with one helper. But again, the Kids kept up the pace & kept coming. But the score remained tied for the next six minutes as some white shirt help arrived in the form of keeper Tony Meadows & Gianni Pens, complementing the players already in the match, Patrick Curry, Todd Loretta, Mike Hogan, Casey Walsh & Steve Rankin, playing in his first match back in several sessions. The white shirts solidified their defensive shape, created a few offensive chances & slowed down the onrushing Kids side. But then they struck again, notching their third of the evening, regaining their lead at 3-2. The worst was still to come.

It remained 3-2 at the interval. The white shirts took some comfort in the fact that they had taken the Kids best shots, got a couple of their own & were back in the match, albeit down one. Then the second half started. Remember what seems to always happen to the white shirts? Well, it happened again, times two, in agonizing fashion.

In the first two minutes of the second half, the Kids notched another two tallys, stretching their lead to 5-2 & dashing just about all hopes for a white shirt comeback. The Kids were on a roll & comfortable, knocking the ball around with confidence, making sortie after sortie. Hay maker after hay maker. After coming back twice & being down only one at the interval, & then to find themselves down by three only a minute & a half into the second half, was enormously disheartening. But then, a funny thing happened. Two more regulars showed up & changed the tide of the match.

David Hipperson & Jason Thomure helped deepen the white shirt bench & help quell the Kids onrush. The Kids had been running 'n gunning on the white shirts all match &, even after the white shirts had slowed them down & regained some much needed possession, they still couldn't jump start the offense. Now, with the deepened bench, the players were fresher, started making runs, stretching the field & the opponent. Little by little, the white shirts got back into the match.

About two minutes after the last Kids tally, Pens, on a second effort, booted home tally number 3. Advantage Kids, 5-3. Then, less than a minute later, late comer Hipperson hit a bomb off a beautiful long, diagonal through ball, notching the white shirts fourth. Advantage Kids, 5-4. Then the turning point.

Coralic, with his second left footed bomb of the night, tied the match at 5 with about thirteen minutes left. Lots of time. It was game on. The white shirt attitude & aggressiveness showed a marked difference from this point on. Rarely were the Kids getting man advantage counters. In fact, the tide had turned to the point that the white shirts were compiling multiple counters of their own, putting the Kids defense under unfamiliar pressure. Chinks in their defensive shape started to appear. Curry made them pay.

On a follow of a teammates missed shot, Curry jumped on the rebound & hit a rocket that nutted the keeper & gave the white shirts their first lead of the match at 6-5 with a little over ten minutes left. The deluge would continue. On another white shirt man advantage counter, Loretta jumped on a carom in the middle of the box, making no mistake & banged it home for a two goal lead at 7-5 while the old Timex wound down to six minutes. Unbeknownst to anyone at the moment, but that tally would turn out to be the game winner.

Hipperson would put a cap on the evenings amazing comeback with a penalty kick at the two minute mark as a result of a teammate being taken down in the box by the keeper on a breakaway. He rocketed a bullet past the keepers outstretched arms & through his hands, but he couldn't hold it or deflect it, & that was the white shirts eighth tally of the evening. The Kids would tally a meaningless goal a bit later. But, the comeback was complete.

When the Kids tallied those two just after the interval to take a commanding three goal lead at 5-2 as well as the all important momentum that goes with it, I'm sure the possibility of a loss of this match was on more than a few minds. With the addition of a few players, ball possession, slowing the match down, regaining their defensive shape & the confidence that goes with all of those attributes, the white shirts started controlling the match & the comeback was on. It was a beautiful thing to behold.

With the win the white shirts stretch their record to a modest 2-0. But it will be put to a huge test next Tuesday. They'll meet old friends, Red Star, at 8:50 on field #2. Last session these two met twice. Both times the white shirts came up disappointed in dramatic fashion. The first match, back on 1/17, started out the same way this one did, giving up two goals in the first minute of play. But in that match they weren't as fortunate as they were against the Kids this night. They again gave up a goal after the interval, but continued to come back & eventually tied the game in the 41st minute only to lose it 9-8 in the last 30 seconds.

The second match was the championship on 3/6, a match the white shirts would like to forget. Again they gave up tallys in the first minute & ended up getting blown out 7-3, dropping them all the way to 3rd place in the final standings. The white shirts would like a little pay back. If they are indeed going to get back one of those losses, they'll need to have all their players when the opening whistle blows & not give up those damaging first minute tallys. We shall see. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring: David Hipperson, 2 goals & 3 helpers; Edin Coralic, 2 goals & 1 helper; Todd Loretta, 1 goal & 2 helpers; Patrick Curry, Gianni Pens & Kevin Vonarx, 1 goal each.

SSL O-40, 10, WASSABI, 7

KNOLL'S 4 LEAD CHARGE

WHITE SHIRTS WIN OPENER

After the loss in last weeks championship, it was back to work for the short handed white shirts. Their opponent in this opening match, Wassabi, would be an interesting one. Last session, Wassabi was in the lower division. In a spectacular comeback in their championship last week, after falling behind 6-1, they charged to the finish line with 6 unanswered goals for a 7-6 win. As a result of that win, they got moved up into the SSL division. So, it would be the champions of the lower division versus SSL, the runner up in the upper division. It would prove to be interesting.

But things got off to a comfortable start, as perennial scoring leader Kevin Vonarx got the white shirts off to a quick start, banging in two early tallys. But the slow starting Wassabi side wasn't about to be intimidated by the two early scores & tallied one of their own, to narrow the score to 2-1. They topped that off with their second only a few minutes later. So, what looked to be a comfortable start & perhaps an easy match, evaporated just that quickly. SSL realized very quickly, not to underestimate this opponent. They were bringing it. Fast & furious.

Then newcomer Joel Knoll (of the Knoll Florist family), made his inaugural appearance one to remember. He scored the next two in dramatic fashion, hitting long, tailing, knuckling bombs that darted past the Wassabi keeper & into the back of the net, restoring the white shirt lead at 4-2. However, Wassabi was not done yet. They kept chipping away, netting another to narrow the score once again at 4-3.

Then Edin Coralic gave the white shirts their two goal lead back with the first of his two left footed tallys on the evening., stretching the score to 5-3. A bit more comfortable for the white shirts against this pesky, hard hitting opponent. Then it was Knoll again, further making his presence felt in this first match with the white shirt side, hitting yet another long range rocket from out side the white line, providing the white shirts with their biggest lead of the evening at 6-3. They would need it.

As quick as you could say, "where'd the lead go", the Wassabi side, pressuring the scrambling white shirt defense all match, banged home two of their own, closing the score to a very scary 6-5. These Wassabi players just wouldn't go away. Then Knoll struck again.

With his fourth of the night, on a blistering blast from distance, Knoll provided the white shirts with what turned out to be a temporary two goal cushion at 7-5. But again, Wassabi hung in there, netting another of their own, closing the score to 7-6, leaving the white shirts with the narrowest of a one goal cushion. Then it was Curry time.

Late arrival, Patrick Curry, contributed almost immediately. On his first shift, he banged home a finish, again giving the white shirts a two goal margin. His brother Ryan, followed that up with one of his own, providing the white shirts with their second three goal cushion of the evening at 9-6. Would they be able to hang onto this lead, late in the match & hold off the hard charging Wassabi side? Only time would tell.

As it was, both sides exchanged tallys, Coralic with his second of the evening & one for the Wassabi side, resulting in a final score of 10-7. For lack of a better name, this reminded all fans of a wild west shoot out. Seventeen goals in a match! If nothing else, it was entertaining. Except for the players involved. It was stress time.

Now the white shirts can put the disappointment of last weeks loss in the championship behind them, put this win in the bank & look forward to next weeks match. Will this win & the addition of Knoll propel the white shirts into yet another championship berth? Again, only time will tell. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Joel Knoll, 4 goals; Edin Coralic & Kevin Vonarx, 2 goals & 2 helpers each; Patrick & Ryan Curry, 1 goal each; Todd Loretta & keeper Tony Meadows, 2 helpers each; Mike Hogan & Gianni Pens, 1 helper each.

RED STAR 7, SSL O-40, 3

RED STAR BURSTS CINDERELLA'S BUBBLE

DOMINATE 40'S IN CHAMPIONSHIP

In week #2, back on 1/17, the white shirts & Red Star played a classic match. Although the white shirts fell behind 2-0 in the first few minutes of that match, each side was throwing haymakers in what turned out to be a classic. The white shirts trailed the entire match & then finally tied it up 8-8 with but a minute left, only to lose 9-8 in the last 30 seconds of the match. Everyone thought this championship match would be a replay of that first contest. It was anything but.

Leading up to this final contest, the white shirts, with their large complement of O-40 players mixed in with some youngsters, had performed brilliantly, winning 5, tying one & losing only one. And following last weeks heart stopping, last second tie that launched them into the finals, were on a bit of a roll. Their confidence was brimming heading into this contest. However, Cinderellas's dance came to a disappointing end at the hands of Red Star.

Red Star came out flying, controlling the tempo of the play, oftentimes pushing all 5 players forward into the offense. SSL had no answer. Red Star, much like the first match, scored in the first minute of play. They followed that up with their second tally just a couple minutes later. The white shirts were looking up at an early 2-0 deficit, a mirror image of the previous meeting. However, there was no come back in this match in the white shirt future.

Already missing two injured players, Bernard Anic (knee) & Guillermo Cortez (ankle), during the course of the match they lost two more. Edin Coralic pulled a hamstring early in the first half & David Hipperson tweaked a foot early in the second. However, the way Red Star was playing, had the white shirts had their missing players, would probably have made very little difference. The Stars controlled the play from the outset. They dominated the match.

One of the things the Stars did well, that taxed the SSL defense, was running off the ball. Often pushing up all 5 into the offense & running off the ball, created match up problems for the white shirts. The Stars always had a man open & were always able to find him. Many of their seven tallys were open man tap ins. And to put some perspective on the white shirt futility in this match, they were out shot approximately 25-10 & out possessed 60-40. And I may be generous with those estimates. This match was all Stars.

So now, it's on to the next session for the white shirts. Although they came up well short in the finals, they still had a successful session in this open division, going 5-1-2, finishing in 3rd place in a division of eight teams. And as the O-40 players on this side have said all along, it is better to lose in the open on the big fields then win in the O-40 on the small field. Hope to see you next session. Thanks for reading.

SSL O-30, 4, FENIX, 2

GREAT WEEK FOR SSL

TWO TEAMS, TWO FINALS

Well, the jury is still out. The O-30 team won their final, 4-2 over Fenix last Thursday. The O-40 side still has yet to play next Tuesday in their final. But, obviously, it's been a good week for the white shirts. It started last Thursday.

Playing in their 5th straight final, & looking to improve their 2-2 record thus far in those finals, the white shirts faced off versus old adversarys, Fenix. With a win, they'd up their finals record to 3-2. With a loss, well, they didn't want to go there. And Fenix didn't make it easy on them. In fact, early on, they looked as if they'd be playing the spoilers role.

But things started well for the white shirts, getting on top 1-0 about midway thru the first half. However, to that point, although the white shirts had dominated play, possession & shots, they held only that fragile one goal lead, compliments of Ryan Curry. And they say timing is everything. The timing for Curry was perfect. If a player is going to have a "hat trick", probably the best time for that would be in the session championship. Curry provided the white shirts with that performance.

He got things started for the white shirts with his first of three huge tallys on the evening, on a beautiful through ball from Tony Sharamitaro. Sharamitaro picked off an errant Fenix pass just about at the center circle. He turned toward the Fenix end & spied Curry making a dash from his left, near the boards, towards the penalty area. Sharamitaro slotted the ball perfectly to him, in stride, splitting two defenders. When Curry arrived at the ball, with bad intent, he made no hesitation. He turned & hit a right footed rocket that zipped past the flatfooted Fenix keeper & into the bottom left corner of the goal for an early 1-0 lead for the white shirts. Then bad things started happening.

Just as quick as you could say "championship playoff", the Fenix, always on the attack, tallied two of their own to take their first lead of the match at 2-1. A bit of shell shock ran through the SSL side. They had dominated the match from the start with little to show for it. Now they found themselves behind for the first time, late in the first half. Many squandered chances were the reason. Time after time, they were in the Fenix defensive third with golden opportunities. But if the Fenix keeper wasn't making mind boggling saves, then the defenders were blocking shots, or, the white shirts just missed. Their reward? Looking up at a 2-1 deficit. But, at the time, little did anyone on either side realize, that was the last Fenix tally on the evening. Then it was David Hipperson who got the white shirts started on a three unanswered goal streak on a dagger to the Fenix heart.

Just over a minute left in the first half, & the white shirts were still coming up empty. Had it not been for the early Curry goal, they'd have found themselves shut out to that point, even though they dominated the game & the stats. But that would change quickly. On yet another SSL possession, Jeremy Maue had possession of the ball, deep in the right corner of the Fenix defensive third, next to the wall, & in heavy traffic. Hipperson made a run down the middle from his defensive end. Maue saw him. Calmly, Maue put a diagonal ball onto the on rushing Hipperson's foot. He crushed it from just outside the white line. It screamed into the back of the net. The Fenix keeper had no chance on this rocket. 2-2 as the first half expired.

The second half was all SSL, Ryan Curry & the defense. Both of Curry's goals were similar. Hustle! That is probably the best part of his game. He doesn't quit. And he didn't quit on these two opportunities. On the first, he took a shot from outside the Fenix penalty area, but it was wide left. He followed his shot to where a defender was attempting to control the carom. He slipped between the defender & the wall, collected the ball, turned to his right, & buried it up & over the keepers outstretched hands. With that tally, the eventual game & championship winner, the white shirts recaptured the lead at 3-2. They would not relinquish it.

Curry's second was similar, but on the other side of the Fenix goal. Again following up a missed shot, he stepped around a defender & headed toward the goal, where the keeper was coming off his line to collect the ball. Curry beat him to it, then beat the keeper & roofed a shot over the keepers hands into the top right corner of the goal for a commanding 4-2 lead as time was leaking off the old Bulova.

The rest of the match it almost appeared that the white shirts were on cruise control. They were content to possess the ball & instead of scoring, keep the Fenix from scoring. They were masterful at it. They consistently found the open man with crisp passes incorporating keeper Tony Meadows, who had an outstanding performance of his own in this match, & that created marking problems for the Fenix. The white shirts always had a man open & the ability to find him.

As the clock ticked down to all zeros, the white shirts took satisfaction in their dominating performace, out shooting the Fenix by a whopping 30-5 margin & out possessing them 65-35, enroute to their 3rd consecutive championship win. Additionally, that was also their 5th straight trip to the finals. This win put them over .500 in those matches with 3 up & 2 down. It was a good night.

It was also a good week for the SSL clubs. Not only did the 30's qualify for, & win, the O-30 championship this night, but the open side, composed of a half dozen or so O-40 players as well as a mixture of younger players, also qualified for the Open division championship in electrifying fashion last Tuesday. They play next Tuesday on field #1 at 9:10 versus Red Star. If they win that match, it would be a sweet sweep for the white shirts. Congratulations to the 30's for their win. Now they have to start all over again for next session. But that's why they play the games. Now it's up to the 40's to win theirs. Good luck to them. Hope you can join us for the new session & the Open Championship next Tuesday. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Ryan Curry, 3 goals; David Hipperson, 1 goal; Chris Gianino, Jeremy Maue, Tony Meadows & Tony Sharamitaro, 1 helper each.

SSL O-40, 5, BWA, 5

ANICS 2 TALLYS SPARK MIRACULOUS COMEBACK

CURRY'S BOMB PROPELS 40'S INTO CHAMPIONSHIP

This was truly a match for the record book. With 4 seconds left in the match, Patrick Curry hit an absolute rocket into the bottom right corner of the BWA for the tying goal & that most valuable single point the white shirts received for the tie was enough to earn them a spot in the finals. It was an incredible finish. Here's how it all unfolded.

Determining the two finalists was crazy to start with. Entering the final match of the session, anyone of 4 teams could qualify for the finals. BWA, with a win over SSL could get in if either of the other two, Red Star or FNG stumbled. As it turned out, FNG lost 7-2 to the Ambush & they were out of the running. Red Star won their match, 7-6 over the Cheerios, so they were in. It was down to SSL & BWA. BWA needed a win. They were sitting on 13 points & SSL with 15. Win and they're in. The white shirts needed a win or a tie. They played as is they wanted the win. They pressured BWA from the outset.

For the first ten minutes of the match, the white shirts controlled possession & play, getting off several quality shots. But the BWA keeper was on top of his game. He turned aside shot after SSL shot all match long, at times frustrating the white shirts. On 2 or 3 occasions, everyone thought the ball was in, only to have him throw out a foot or stick out a big paw to make the save. It was going to be one of those nights.

But the BWA side is a counter attack team. They bend but don't break. They are one formidable opponent. On one such SSL attack, the BWA defenders picked off a pass & launched into a counter. Three passes later, the ball was in the back of the SSL goal. Frustrating. After all the pressure applied by the white shirts, they were down 1-0 at about the half way point of the first half. Adding to that frustration was the BWA second tally, only 2 minutes later, again on a SSL lost ball & a counter. And the BWA side works their counters to perfection. BWA 2, SSL 0.

When they get into the offensive end, the BWA players are constantly moving off the ball, making it very difficult to mark them 100% of the time. As a result, they seemed to always have a man open & of course, they'd find him with the ball. And he'd finish. So, only half way thru the first half, the white shirts found themselves looking up at a 2-0 deficit. That championship berth was looking further & further away. One of the few things they had to their advantage was time. There was a lot left. Gianni Pens got the SSL motor running.

As time wound down in the 1st half, the white shirts righted themselves & continued to pressure & possess the ball the majority of play. But the BWA keeper, as mentioned earlier, was just shutting down the white shirt offense. With a minute left in the half, it looked very much as if the white shirts would enter the interval down 2-0. Not too bad & certainly it could have been worse, but as mentioned earlier, there was a lot of time left.

Not so fast! There was still time left in this first half & the white shirts were again pushing the ball forward. Mike Bess had the ball to the left of the BWA penalty area & was tightly marked. As he looked off another white shirt forward, he saw Pens, all alone to the right of the goal. He slotted him the ball. Pens collected it, put a little shoulder fake on the BWA keeper, pushed the ball to his left foot & banged it home for the first SSL tally of the match. Now they were only down 2-1 entering the second half. And Pens tally came with less than 30 seconds remaining. That was a huge confidence boost for the white shirts. They were back in the match. The euphoria didn't last long.

Only 15 seconds into the second half, BWA tallied their third of the evening. They really rained on the SSL parade. Just seconds before, the white shirts were enjoying a shot of momentum & now, seconds later, their shoulders were sagging. Still, time was on their side. They took advantage.

The white shirts were still battling, making passes, keeping possession & getting chances. They were actually playing very well. They were limiting the BWA chances while getting more of their own. It paid off. On one such possession, defender Bernard Anic, who consistently pushes up into the offense, creating match up problems for any defense, did so on this occasion. He found Kevin Vonarx with the ball at the top of the box & Vonarx did the rest of the work, sliding across the top to the right & hitting the ball back to his left, where it buried itself in the bottom left corner of the BWA goal. The keeper wasn't going to get this one. Now it was a more manageable 3-2 deficit for the white shirts. It was game on.

With the added momentum of the 2nd tally, the white shirts were really pressing the attack. They were swarming the BWA defensive third. On one such effort, Anic again was in the thick of things. With his back to the goal & in heavy traffic at the edge of the penalty area, he collected a ball & turned to his right & headed to the goal. He juked around the keeper who came off his line. Just as he was about to shoot, the keeper took him down. Penalty kick! Anic made no mistake & buried a rocket over the keepers head & between his hands that he could only feebly wave at. Just like that, it was a tie game at 3-3. The SSL juices were flowing. They were back in the hunt. They had the mojo. And then BWA brought them back down to earth. Quickly.

For the second time in the match, BWA responded with a tally of their own less then 60 seconds after the SSL tally. Frustrating. And, to throw salt on the wound & for good measure, they added yet another goal, increasing their lead from the 3-3 tie to 4-3 & now 5-3. That championship berth for the white shirts looked virtually impossible to attain at this point. There were less than 5 minutes remaining. This would be a tall hill to climb.

But strange things happen in an indoor soccer match. Particularly if your side is as talented & workmanlike as are the white shirts. There's no quit in this bunch. So, even though they found themselves down by two with little time remaining, they continued to play. They dominated the last minutes of the match. It turned the tide.

The white shirts were continually camped out in the BWA defensive third. Peppering shot after shot at the keeper, but to no avail. To this point. The BWA defense continued to sag on the white shirts & helped their keeper by blocking many shots. However, pressure does on occasion pay dividends. It did this time.

Once again, it was Anic, pushing up into the offense. Vonarx, an offensive catalyst in his own right, continued to draw double & sometimes triple teaming. That left others open. On one such occasion, he found Anic, all alone along the boards to the left of the goal. Anic buried it. It was a bomb that roofed over the keepers head & he had no chance from that close range. There were 24 tics left on the old Timex. Was it enough? Down 5-4 it didn't look good. But heck, it hadn't looked good all night for that matter. What do you have to lose other than the match, & they were losing at that point anyway. Push the edge of the envelope. They did.

On the ensuing BWA center off, the white shirts pushed everybody up, forcing BWA to scramble to maintain possession of the ball. Then they did the unthinkable. They committed a cataclysmic error. One of the defenders played his keeper the ball. He couldn't use his hands. But he did! The whistle blew. Tic, tic, tic, the clock counted down. 15 seconds. 10 seconds. It was a dead ball for the white shirts.

The white shirts passed the ball around, constantly looking for space where there wasn't any. Tic, tic, tic. The clock continued to count down. Bodies were flying, chaos reigned. Then, Anic, yet again, was in the mix. He received the ball down deep in the left corner next to the boards. Surrounded by friend & foe alike he still managed to see Patrick Curry, all alone on the far right side of the pitch at the white line. Curry made a bee line for the top right corner of the penalty area. Somehow, Anic was able to slot him the ball thru heavy traffic. He ran onto the ball & with the instep of his right foot, hit an absolute pill that whistled past the keeper in a blink & into the bottom right corner of the BWA goal. Tie game!!! There were but 4 seconds left on the clock. Amazing! Incredible!

What was even more amazing was the fact that, after calculating the points for all the contenders, that one, single point that the white shirts were able capture with that last second tie, catapulted them into a first place tie with Red Star, each with 16 points, & that highly coveted championship berth. They were going to the finals! Incredible. Had they lost that match, BWA would have gotten the nod. 4 seconds is all that separated SSL from a championship berth or 3rd place. What a match!

So, BWA, leading by 2 with 24 seconds left, instead left with a tie, one point & a fourth place finish. Contrastingly, that single point achieved by the white shirts rewarded them with their 2nd trip to the finals in their 3 sessions in the open division to go along with their 3rd place finish last session. Remarkable.

Now, it's on to the championship. They'll face a familiar foe, old friends Red Star, formerly the Maddox bunch. A powerful offensive juggernaut in their own right, this lethal offensive side should provide a fireworks laden final for all to see. In their only other meeting this session, back in week two, the Red Stars pulled out a last second 9-8 win after the white shirts spotted the Stars 2 early tallys, falling behind 2-0, only 2 minutes into the match. Then, with a minute to play the white shirts came back to tie it 8-8 only to lose it with 30 seconds to go. So, if nothing else, it should be greatly entertaining. They'll meet next Tuesday at 9:10 on field #1. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Bernard Anic, 2 goals & 2 helpers; Kevin Vonarx, 1 & 1; Patrick Curry & Gianni Pens, 1 goal each & Mike Bess 1 helper.

SSL O-30, 6, HOOSIER FC, 3

MEADOWS TURNS BACK HOOSIER FC

PROPELS SSL TO 5TH STRAIGHT FINAL

You hear this term all the time. Their keeper stood on his head. Well, SSL keeper Tony Meadows didn't exactly stand on his head, but under tremendous pressure all contest, performed his acrobatic best to turn aside an onslaught of Hoosier attempts & preserve his sides win for yet another trip to the finals. He was easily the "Man of the Match".

It was truly a quirky match. The white shirts had the Hoosier side shut out for the entire first half, resulting in a 3-0 lead at the interval. They also out possessed the Hoosier side 60-40. But, for the match, the white shirts were out shot by a wide margin of about 35-20. However, the reason for this was basic. Defense first!

The white shirts battled the Hoosier FC on small field #3. Not the best venue to put forth your best effort. That field will level the playing field for all participants. It's not the place to play your normal game. SSL didn't. They backed it up & packed it in, concentrating on defense first. What a novel idea. Ergo, the lethal Hoosier's offense had lots of shots, but few results. The defensive shape blocked shot after shot. And for the few shots that got through, Meadows was up to the challenge. And some of those shots were point blank.

As a result of the defensive shape employed by the white shirts, they found themselves with a lot of offensive space. Even the Hoosier keeper was pushing up into the offense. Consequently, although out shot, the white shirts shot quality was much better. They finished their chances. And that finished Hoosier FC.

There was a great deal on the line for Hooser in this match. Entering it, they were in second place with 11 points to SSL 15. So, they had no chance to overtake the white shirts, but to secure a spot in the finals, required a win on their part, because lurking in 3rd place only 2 points behind Hoosier was the Fenix side. If they win, they're in. If they lose, they'd have to depend on a loss by the Fenix side. It was all or nothing & their potential championship berth was in their hands. So when this match started, the Hoosier side came out running and gunning.

But the white shirts maintained their composure & magician Meadows kept them in it early. Each side traded hay makers with the Hoosier's getting the majority of the shots. But many were high, wide or in the nets as a result of suffocating defensive pressure & marking by the white shirts. As the two sides traded back and fourths, the score remained knotted at zero. That ended at the 16 minute mark.

On yet another counter by SSL resulting in another quality chance, the white shirts were awarded a dead ball foul. Down in the right corner of the Hoosier defensive third, Jason Thomure took a shot that clanged off the back of a defender & into the Hoosier goal for the first tally of the match. 1-0 SSL.

Just 3 minutes later, Jeremy Maue found Joe Sharamitaro, who was a force with 3 tallys on the evening. Sharmo took two dribbles past two defenders & deposited a left footed bomb into the bottom left corner of the Hoosier goal to take a 2 goal lead at 2-0 SSL.

The teams arrived at the interval with SSL sporting their 2-0 lead. Shutting out the Hoosier side on field #3 is no small task. They are tied with SSL for most goals for the session at 36. Meadows was on his game.

It remained 2-0 for the first 5 minutes of the second half. That was dangerous territory. Everyone knows that a 2-0 lead is the same as a tie game. If the opponent scores to narrow it to 2-1, it may as well be tied, as a result of the accelerated pace of the trailing team as well as their momentum. At 2-0, there was still a long way to go. The next tally would be telling. It fell to the white shirts.

It was Sharamitaro again. On a pretty as you please give and go, Sharmo hooked up with the "human dynamo" Chris Gianino. Sharmo had the ball on the Hoosier side of the center line & found Gianino down deep in the left corner of the Hoosier defensive end. He slotted the ball to him thru two defenders & then continued his run toward the goal. Gianino gave it right back. Sharmo knew what to do with the return ball & buried it in the back of the Hoosier goal for that all important 3rd goal & a 3 goal lead at 3-0. It was huge.

But, even when you pack it in, allowing your opponent shots, there's always that chance that there'll be a tally. When there's 4 of yours & 4 of theirs, all inside the white line, crazy things happen. And in spite of Meadows athleticism, the Hoosiers persistence paid a dividend with their first tally of the match. The score now stood at 3-1, advantage SSL. The white shirts were still not out of the woods. There was a long way to go & the Hoosier side was ramping up the pressure. Should they get their second tally, & narrow the score to 3-2, it could be a white knuckle ride to the finish. Ryan Curry would not allow that to happen.

As had happened all contest, the white shirts constantly found themselves with room on the offensive end. On one such occurrence, Curry had the ball in the Hoosier end at the white line, marked by 2 defenders. He deftly stepped between them, with the ball, & found himself one on one, facing the keeper. He took one dribble & hit a right footed rocket into the bottom left corner of the Hooser goal, reestablishing the SSL 3 goal lead at 4-1. So in spite of the increased pressure by the Hoosier offense, the white shirts were capitalizing on the open offensive space and their ensuing chances. The white shirts had just acquired a bit more breathing room.

Again the Hoosiers struck for a tally, but it was late & getting later. There were only 4 minutes left in their season & they needed more. But SSL held a commanding 4-2 lead & were about to stretch it to 5-2. Gianino & Sharmo hooked up yet again to snatch back their 3 goal bulge.

Turn about is fair play. Sharmo, collecting the ball from a Hoosier forward, turned up field & spied Gianino flying towards the Hoosier goal. He fed him the ball in stride in the penalty area & Gianino made no mistake & banged it home from close in, stretching the SSL lead to 5-2. The last minute of play was an interesting one, in which the Hoosier's struck for their 3rd tally, but immediately following that, Sharmo collected his third of the evening on a length of the field shot (remember, this is field #3) after the Hoosier keeper had vacated his net, pushing up into the offense. It rolled nicely into the empty net. Advantage SSL, 6-3. Game, & season, over for the Hoosiers.

But, it was a fast paced & entertaining match. The Hoosier side is a formidable, lethal, offensive weapon. In this match, after falling behind, they had no choice but to push up. It cost them as the white shirts stiffened on defense & took advantage of the offensive opportunities. And of course, with keeper Meadows running the defensive show, any side will be hard pressed to score.

Now the white shirts look forward to their 5th, count 'em, 5, consecutive trip to the finals. Impressive. And, as the results for the evening were posted, the Fenix were decisive 10-2 winners over the Arsenal side, & now find themselves leapfrogging Hoosier, & will meet SSL in the finals next week @ 8pm on field #2.

So, on the heels of their 5th consecutive trip to the finals, they'll have to prep for the very dangerous, clever & talented Fenix. If they are to defeat this impressive side, they'll need to once again incorporate their very effective, & novel, defensive shape & then take advantage of any offensive opportunities that it presents them. In addition to the obvious opportunity a championship berth presents them, is one other, not so obvious opportunity awaiting the white shirts. In those previous 4 trips to the finals, they've split with 2 wins & 2 losses. This will be their chance to get above .500 & establish a winning mark in championship trips. We hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Joe Sharamitaro, 3 goals & 1 helper; Chris Gianino, 2 goals & 1 helper; Ryan Curry, 1 goal & Jeremy Maue & Jamie Perryman, 1 helper each.

SSL O-40, 13, TEAM PUMA, 3

40'S CRUISE TO LOPSIDED WIN

PREP FOR SHOWDOWN WITH BWA

Talk about a crazy match. This was one for the books. The white shirts started off like gang busters, with 2 early goals. One by Edin Coralic & the second by hot shooting Patrick Curry. Plus, they were carrying the play to the Puma's & getting chance after chance. Unfortunately for the white shirts, those many chances were going unfulfilled as they failed to capitalize on those golden opportunities. And if you let a beaten team stay in a match long enough, well, you know how that goes. And it went.

No sooner did someone say, when the score was 2-0, that the next goal by the white shirts would put this match away, then the Puma's scored. You just felt it coming. The white shirts just kept letting them hang around, not putting them away, & the next thing you know, it was 2-2 & the white shirts were asking each other, what happened?

Well, what happened next was Patrick Curry. On this evening, Curry had his second straight 3 goal game, & 3rd 3 goal game in 4 matches. And those tallys dovetailed nicely with 2 helpers to go along with them. So, when the Puma's got their 2nd, Curry answered with his 2nd, to put the white shirts up 3-2, eventually turning that into a 4-2 half time score, and they never looked back.

Some of the late pick ups for the Puma's left at half time & the white shirts went on to scorch the remaining Puma's, 8-1 in the 2nd half, coasting to their 4th consecutive win, & further securing their hold on 1st place, albeit in a tie with FNG, whom they defeated earlier in the season, 7-4. Also lurking in the distance is a formidable opponent, BWA, who, as a result of a bye, dropped 3 points off the pace & is currently residing in 3rd place.

But this match was all SSL. Once Patrick Curry regained the lead for the white shirts, they were off to the races. Possession, shots, defense, passing, offense, creativity, were all humming along like a finely tuned machine. They'll need all of that, & more, for their next opponent.

In an ironic twist, next weeks match for the white shirts is against that very same BWA side, at 8:20 on field #1. What is ironic about it is if the white shirts win, they'll very likely meet BWA again in the finals. However, if the white shirts should falter, they could drop all the way to 3rd & find themselves playing in that 3rd place final instead of the championship. So, it goes without saying, next weeks match is a big one. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Patrick Curry, 3 goals & 2 helpers; Guillermo Cortez & Kevin Vonarx, 2 goals & 1 helper each; Gianni Pens, 1 goal & 3 helpers; Edin Coralic, Ryan Curry & Jason Thomure, 1 & 1 each; & Bernard Anic & Mike Hogan, 1 goal each.

SSL O-30, 6, MINNIGERODE, 3

WHITE SHIRTS ALMOST SQUANDER LEAD

PULL AWAY IN 2ND; CLINCH 1ST PLACE

The SSL O-30 side did something different & something familiar in this match. Differently, they didn't allow the opponent, Minnigerode, to score in the opening seconds of the match. What was familiar was, they allowed Minni to score 30 seconds into the 2nd half & then allowed them to score again, 1 minute later. They just can't seem to find a way to break that trend. However, on the good side, in spite of this shortcoming, they won the match.

They jumped out to a comfortable 3-0 lead in the first, started by Ryan Curry. Just 4 minutes in, on a beautiful give n go from Curry to Jamie Perryman & back to Curry, he received the ball back at the top of the box, with a defender in close pursuit. He turned, performing a 180 degree turn, righted himself with the ball on his right foot, & hit a rocket past the keeper & into the back of the Minni net for the first tally of the match for the white shirts. 1-0 SSL.

The next tally was the result of a hard working Jeremy Maue on a hustle play. Chris Gianino, carrying the ball up field from his own end, found Maue with a pass at the top of the box. Maue collected the ball, turned & fired. The ball was a little wide right. But, like the smart player he is, followed his shot, leaving his marker behind & pounced on the rebound, banging it home for a nice 2-0 lead. The offense continued in spectacular fashion.

Again, midfielder Gianino, constantly in motion, pushing the envelope, physically frustrating defenders & making plays, found David Hipperson with the ball. Hipperson made a full field run out of the back & received the ball from Gianino, stationed down deep in the left corner of the Minni defensive end. Hipperson, in full stride, ran onto the diagonal ball from Gianino at about the top of the box. His one timer exploded off his foot & screamed into the back of the net, giving the white shirts a very comfortable 3-0 lead, just as the 1st half was ending. Apparently the white shirts became too comfortable. The start of the 2nd half was the same old, disheartening story for the white shirts. They just can't seem to shake the early/late opponent tally.

Only 30 seconds into the 2nd half, Minni scored. The white shirts were just not ready for the center off. Up 3-0, they were feeling very comfortable. Minni, on the other hand, were ready to play. And play they did. Just 1 minute after their first tally, narrowing the score to 3-1, they scored a 2nd, tightening the score to 3-2, sending a wake up call to the white shirts. This match was far from over & you boys better get back on your horses or this one will get away from you. They did, thanks to Perryman.

Again it was Gianino starting the play. Moving with the ball out of his defensive end, he spied a sprinting Perryman, making a dash down the right side. He slotted him the diagonal ball perfectly, just outside the side of the Minni penalty area. It was Perryman & the keeper. He pulled the ball back & deftly chipped the ball up and over the keeper for the white shirts 4th tally of the match. It would turn out to be the game winner. And incidentally, it was Gianino's 3rd helper of the evening. He had assisted on 3 of the first 4 for the white shirts!

Then it was Sharamitaro time. The brothers Joe & Tony chipped in with a couple fab tallys of their own. Joe had pushed up the left side of the field, defending a Minni attacker when he stripped the ball from him. He eluded a second defender & closed on the left side of the goal. In a beautiful show of patience & ball handling, he coaxed the keeper off his line towards him. He then deftly stepped around him & chipped the ball over the prone keeper & into the back of the Minni goal, again reestablishing a 3 goal lead for the white shirts at 5-2.

But give credit to the Minnegerode side. They didn't quit. Shortly after the tally by Joe Sharamitaro, the Minni side tallied a goal of their own, narrowing the score to 5-3. Still comfortable for the white shirts, but, they needed to assert themselves if they were going to dispatch the Minni side once & for all. Tony Sharamitaro did so in spectacular fashion.

Mike Hogan started things off. He stole the ball in his defensive end. Meanwhile, the Minni side was pushing up, trying to create some offense, leaving the defensive end under manned. Hogan saw this & also saw Tony, all alone, just inside the center line on the right side. Hogan delivered him the ball & he turned up field towards the Minni goal. However, a defender came out to meet him. Big mistake. Tony, faking towards the outside, did a 180 & turned inside, leaving the defender behind him & Tony found himself fronting the goal. In one quick motion, he hit a left footed absolute bomb that screamed into the top right corner of the Minni goal, again, giving the white shirts their coveted 3 goal lead. At that point, it was lights out for the Minni side.

The white shirts had played keep away with them most of the contest, save for some scrappy tallys. But, by and large, the white shirt defense was on their game for the match. In most cases, they had 4 defenders back, allowing only a skimpy 15 or so shots on goal for the evening, Meanwhile, the white shirt offense, recipients of lots of space due to many man advantage counters, pummeled the Minni keeper with about 35. The Minni keeper saved his teams bacon. And bear in mind, the Minni side, entering this match, had lost only once previously, & that was to SoCo Utd., in their crossover match. The Minnegerode side was a formidable opponent.

Well, as a result of this win, the SSL side can take some pride & satisfaction in knowing, that, even with a final match on the schedule for next week, win or lose, they'll still be playing in the championship finals. Incredibly, this will be their 5th straight trip. Now that's something you can hang your hat on. Interestingly, the team they'll face, Hoosier FC, in all likelihood & barring a loss by them in the next match & a win by 3rd place Fenix, will meet SSL in that final. And trumping that little tidbit of information is the fact that these two sides met in last sessions final, won by the white shirts, 6-4. So, there may be a little intrigue involved in the next two matches.

But, by no means do the white shirts want to lose this upcoming match versus Hoosier, to be played at 10:15 on everyones favorite field, #3. They not only want to enter the championship match on a winning note, they also want the Hoosiers entering that match on the heels of a loss....., to the white shirts. Hope you can join us. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Chris Gianino, 3 helpers; Jamie Perryman, 1 goal & 1 helper; Ryan Curry, David Hipperson,  Jeremy Maue, Joe & Tony Sharamitaro, 1 goal each & Mike Hogan, 1 helper.

SSL O-40, 10, CHEERIOS, 5

PATRICK CURRY POWERS 40'S

WIN REMATCH, TIED FOR 1ST

The rematch wasn't as thrilling as last weeks match, but the outcome still wasn't decided until about half way through the second half. In last weeks match versus the Cheerios, they were packed with subs. It was a see saw battle that found the white shirts down 2-0 at the outset, came back to take the lead, fell behind again, took the lead, Cheerios come back within one at the half 5-4, & then Kevin Vonarx went on a tear, scoring six straight goals to put them away with a final 11-7 score. Not this time.

The white shirts jumped in front 3-0, unlike last weeks early deficit, and never looked back. However, the short handed Cheerios made a match of it, never quite going away. The Cheerios narrowed the score to 3-1, then a SSL tally made it 4-1, & then the ever present Cheerios made it 4-2. Then it was two more SSL tallys, making it 6-2. But this is when it got interesting.

Again, the "late half tally" disease that afflicts the white shirts struck again when the Cheerios scored with three ticks left on the clock before the interval to make the score 6-3. Then, in the first minute of the second half, the Cheerios tallied again to narrow it once again to 6-4.The white shirts were finding it difficult to put away the persistent Cheerios side.

Each team traded tallys, resulting in a 7-5 score. Then, midway through the second half, as the Cheerios wearied side of one sub, starting showing signs of fatigue, the white shirts took advantage, pumping in three more, ending up with the final score of 10-5. But, the Cheerios made it a battle. It wasn't easy. It never is in this open division.

For the match, the stats were totally in favor of the white shirts, the final score not withstanding. Possession was easily 60-40, and shots, well, totally one sided at about 35-15. And the offense? It resembled a finely tuned machine. Sometimes at the expense of the defense, which was outstanding about 85% of the time. Edin Coralic got things started with a bomb early. In fact, at one point, he hit the Cheerios keeper in the face, point blank, with another rocket that was so hard, it delayed the restart of the match until the keeper could clear the cobwebs. The Cheerios keeper had a tough night, as I'll explain later. Additionally, Coralic had two shots that caromed off the underside of the crossbar & then skipped harmlessly away. He could easily have had a hat trick on the evening.

Patrick Curry had a spectacular night, both offensively & defensively, chipping in with three tallys & a helper that combined with a full field length run to clear a Cheerios shot off the goal line after keeper Tony Meadows had the ball ricochet off & behind him. Two of Curry's shots were incredible. Both at difficult angles, & both in full stride. He hit two scorchers that the keeper could only watch sail past him & into the back of the net. Then Guillermo Cortez contributed to the onslaught with two tallys & two helpers of his own. His first was also from a really acute angle, down near the boards, next to the goal. It was a beautiful finish.

But Bernard Anic had probably the prettiest tally of the evening. Bringing the ball out of his defensive position, he carried it up the middle of the pitch, stepping smoothly around a couple defenders in the process, all the while, looking to lay the ball off to a forward. However, the passing lanes were all closed, so he continued his trek down the middle of the field. When he finally arrived at the Cheerios penalty area, still with no one to pass to, he let go with a right footed bomb that exploded off his foot & whistled into the back of the net. The entire play was a thing of beauty, fully appreciated by his teammates.

Gianni Pens had a heady play on a tally late in the match. Receiving the ball down deep in the Cheerios penalty area, he was to the right of the goal, but looking to his left to give the ball to Coralic. However, Coralic was covered, so Pens calmly looked up, faced the keeper, & hit a ball, placing it in the lower left corner, just out of the keepers reach. It was that kind of offensive night.

Last weeks standout, Kevin Vonarx, was held fairly silent, by his standards, on this night, contributing two goals & one helper. On one significant finish, as he has a habit of doing, he was moving laterally across the top of the penalty area, from left to right, when he hit a right footed smash that screamed into the bottom left corner of the Cheerios goal. Visualize that for a moment. He was at the top right corner of the box, hit it across his body & it screeched into the bottom left corner. Not many players can hit that shot with any pace. It was a screamer.

But as a result of this offensive prowess, the defense suffered on occasion. Eighty-five percent of the time, the white shirts kept their shape. The other fifteen percent? Not so much. There were breakdowns that didn't result in a tally, so they dodged a bullet. In a match that would have been tighter, those would have been critical mistakes that the Cheerios didn't capitalize on. So in their upcoming matches, that needs to be one of the things that they address. As it is, they rank 5th out of eight teams in goals against. That is not their typical m.o. That won't do in this division. They'll need to be better.

Regarding the tough night for the Cheerios keeper, not only did he stop a shot with his face by Coralic early on, but later in the match Ryan Curry hit a bomb from close in on the right hand side that also hit him in the face, & buckled his knees. Again there was a referees time out til he was able to return. But it didn't end there. Following the match, his teammates noticed that he was acting strangely, notified management & they talked to him. A good thing they did, as he was barely coherent so they contacted a relative to pick him up for the ride home. What really confounds things is that he had an absolutely fabulous game under overwhelming circumstances. We all wish him well.

But, on the good side, as a result of this match, they find themselves still tied for 1st place with two other sides & two regular season matches remaining. One of those matches, in two weeks, is versus BWA, one of the two teams they're tied with. The other, FNG, lost to SSL on 1/31, 7-4. So, next week they'll face the 0-5, last place Baxendale side at 9:10 on field #1. If the white shirts can take care of business next week versus Baxendale & avoid the dreaded "trap" game, & then defeat the BWA side in two weeks, they could find themselves in a championship match at the end of this session. But, they'll need to address that pesky defensive shortcoming as well as those early opponent tallys. We shall see. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Patrick Curry, 3 goals & 1 helper; Guillermo Cortez, 2 & 2; Kevin Vonarx, 2 & 1; Edin Coralic, 1 & 1; Bernard Anic, 1 goal; Todd Loretta & Joe Baer, 1 helper each.

FREAKY SHAKRA, 6, SSL 0-30, 5

30'S UNDEFEATED STREAK COMES TO INGLORIOUS END

1ST PLACE SSL LOSES TO WIN LESS LAST PLACE TEAM

This was not the way it was supposed to be. Quite the contrary. The white shirts should have won this "trap" game, extended their undefeated streak & stretched their current record to 5-0 & solidified their hold on 1st place. No one told Freaky.

Again, the disease continued. For whatever reason, SSL continues to allow early goals. In avalanche fashion. I can't count nor remember all the matches in which the white shirts have given up goals in the first seconds & minutes of a match & also at the beginning of the second half as well. This match was no different. Last Tuesdays match & the last Thursday match, were mirror images of this match. In both of those, the white shirts gave up goals in the first seconds of the match, to go down 2-0 in both. Fortunately, in those two they were able to come back & post hard fought victory's. Not this time.

Once again, for the umpteenth time, the opponent scored while the white shirts were still lacing up their boots. No sooner had the whistle blown for the start of the match than keeper Tony Meadows was picking the ball out of the back of his goal. One minute later, the white shirts were down 2-0. Lethargic, slow starting, lolly gagging, disinterested, lazy, whatever adjective you use could describe the horrible starts that the SSL side has embraced recently. And this one hurt.

For the white shirts, it was a trap game. A game the 1st place SSL side should win versus the win less, last place Freaky Shakra side. But you can't take them lightly. They are a formidable opponent when all their players are present. They were, as all of the opponents are for the SSL side. The white shirts have a target on them & they are every ones championship match. And if you fall asleep on an opponent, they'll jump up & bite you. Freaky did. They had all their players, a full bench. SSL was missing 5 regulars. But, that can be no excuse. You dance with who you bring. And as it turned out, the white shirts made a hell of a game of it late. On one hand, you could say they didn't lose, they just ran out of time. But that extra time they needed was carelessly given away in the first minutes of the match. And the Freaky side took advantage & kept pouring it on.

Jeremy Maue got the offense started for the white shirts, getting his first of two on the night on a ball fed to him by Casey Walsh. He received it at the top of the box, fought his way around a defender & banged it home to get the white shirts on the board. But, once again, with terrible clock management, the white shirts gave up two more tallys to the Freaky side in the last minute of the half, 15 seconds apart. Are you kidding me!!! Just like that, they're down 4-1 at the interval. How frustrating. It got worse.

After the interval, another Freaky tally padded their lead to an almost insurmountable 5-1 score. The outlook for the white shirts was bleak, if that good. And Freaky added more salt to the wound, with another tally off a center off, directly after a beautiful David Hipperson dead ball finish in the upper left corner of the goal. No sooner did the white shirts retreat to the center circle for the Freaky center off, then they were once again picking the ball out of their own net. So literally seconds after Hipperson narrowed the lead to 5-2, Freaky responded with their 6th to further dampen the spirits of, & continue an evening full of frustration for, the white shirts. And there were only 14 minutes left in the match. This was going to be a daunting uphill climb. But then they ramped up their effort & started playing like the first place team they are.

The white shirts got on a roll. Starting with a tally by Maue at the 13 minute mark, the white shirts started pounding the Freaky keeper, who had a world class performance in the nets. Freaky was out shot for the match roughly 35 to 15 It was clearly one sided. However, their keeper was standing on his head, making incredible stops. He & his teammates were being pounded. A couple shots went off the uprights, another hit the underside of the crossbar & caromed away. It was that kind of night for the white shirts. They just could not find the back of the net. But Maue got the party started.

On a second chance, after collecting the rebound of his first missed shot, Maue pounced on the rebound & knocked it past the keeper, finally, to pull the white shirts within 3 at 6-3. Hipperson followed up Maue's tally by hitting his second beautiful dead ball shot, this time into the upper right corner, narrowing the score even more at 6-4. Things were certainly heating up. But, there was still time. Roughly about 10 minutes remained. Plenty of time.

But the Freaky defense stiffened. They concentrated on defending, rather than offense. In fact, they were held scoreless the last 14 minutes of the match. But with all the trees standing in the Freaky penalty area, it was going to be tough to bang home a couple more for the tie. But, Ryan Curry tightened the Freaky collar a bit more with his tally.

Curry was one of the snake bit forwards who had been denied all match. He hit shots from all over the pitch, but to no avail. The Freaky keeper was at the top of his game & was making acrobatic save after acrobatic save, turning aside shot after deadly shot by the white shirts. But persistence pays dividends & the persistent Mr. Curry was finally rewarded.

Curry was in heavy traffic at the top of the box. It was crowded with defenders. But, hanging on to the ball & picking his way thru, he was able to make enough space for himself that he was able to get off a right footed slammer that he hammered into the back of the goal, closing the Freaky lead to just one at 6-5. Now things really got tight.

The white shirts continued their onslaught, peppering the Freaky goal with shot after shot. But still couldn't get the tying tally. Time was dripping quickly off the clock. It wound down to about 2 minutes left, still with the score 6-5 Freaky. But the white shirts were pushing, pushing, pushing. It just was not happening. As the old Timex clicked down to all zeros, the white shirts were in front of the Freaky goal, still trying to bang one home. It just wouldn't happen for them.

In spite of this agonizing loss, the white shirts are in a familiar place. 1st place. Sporting 12 points, they're still 1 point ahead of  2nd place Hoosier FC & 4 points ahead of 3rd place Minnigerode. And you'll never guess who the white shirts will be playing in their final two matches of the session. Well, you probably did guess it. Next week at 10:30 on field #2, they play Minnigerode. The following week they'll meet Hoosier FC on no ones favorite field, #3, at 10:15.

So, the white shirts are in control of their future. A win in either of the two upcoming matches will secure for them a fifth straight invite to the championship. But, before getting ahead of themselves, they need to learn from the Freaky lesson & not repeat that effort in either of the upcoming two matches, or there won't be a 5th straight championship visit. Let's hope they're not asleep at the wheel when the whistle blows to start the match. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  David Hipperson & Jeremy Maue, 2 goals each; Ryan Curry, 1 goal & 1 helper & Casey Walsh, 1 helper.

SSL O-40, 11, CHEERIOS, 7

TIED FOR FIRST!

VONARX POWERS 40'S

Well, the 40's are in fact tied for first. However, so are three other sides. It's a first place log jam. But, better to be in first than not. Now it's up to the 40's to stay in first. That will be no easy task, which was reflected in last nights win. And that win was easily, "The Kevin Vonarx Show".

Led by his incredible 6 tallys for the contest, the white shirts wrestled the lead back after being down 1-0 after only 10 seconds & 2-0 after just 2 minutes. It was that kind of night. It would turn out to be a wild night with lots of goals. And frustratingly for the white shirts, once they finally took the lead, they turned right around & gave it up. Yes, it was that kind of night.

After the center off, the chronically slow starting white shirt side, were still lacing up their boots when the Cheerios, a powerful & lethal offensive side who played as if their hair was on fire, banged home their first of the evening with only 10 seconds gone off the old Timex. Oh well, not to worry, they thought, we'll get that one back. However, once the white shirts were done lacing up their other boot, they were still sleepwalking & found themselves down 2-0. And only two minutes had elapsed. In this league, you can't get away with slow starts. Those young boys would be up 5-0 by the time you put your shirt on, if you let them. But, give credit where credit is due, the white shirts didn't lose focus or panic & got back in the match, albeit slowly.

Once the sluggish SSL offense got going, the Cheerios didn't get the ball often. The white shirts were playing keep away. However, on those few chances that the very dangerous Cheerios did get the ball, they made them count & kept finding ways to find the back of the SSL net. The white shirt defensive shape was clocked out & in disarray all match. Well, not so much in the second half, but they were missing in action in the first. And had they not righted the ship as they did, this match had all the earmarks of a potential blow out.

After going down 2-0, the white shirts tallied three straight on finishes by Edin Coralic off a beautiful long pass from keeper Tony Meadows, on which Coralic beat one defender & deposited the ball in the back of the Cheerio goal with a bullet. Then Gianni Pens, with a beautiful finish on a cross by Kevin Vonarx, kept his knee over the ball & drove it home on a bang bang play. Then it was Coralic again with his second of the evening, blasting the ball just to the right of the Cheerio goal & banged it in off a defenders back. Those 3 tallys jump started the morose SSL offense. The downside to this little offensive breakout was that the white shirts gave back the tying goal immediately, & then they trumped that by giving up two more quick ones, finding themselves approaching the interval on the short end of a  5-3 score. Then it was time for the Vonarx Show.

With 15 seconds left in the first half & down 5-3, things looked a bit grim for the white shirts. The Cheerios were flying high & applying great pressure any time they were able to collect the ball. That was about to change. Vonarx collected the ball from defender Mike Hogan, who pushed up quickly out of his defensive position as time in the half was running out. Vonarx collected the ball in stride, turned toward the goal & put a move on the defenseless keeper & tucked the ball into the back of the Cheerios goal, narrowing the score at the interval to 5-4. That was huge. A tally within a minute of the end of a half is crushing & add to that the difference in the score was sliced in half from 5-3 to 5-4. All the momentum immediately swung to the SSL bench. Vonarx would keep it there.

Show time! The second half belonged to Vonarx. Use any adjective or description you want, & it would apply. Following the interval, Vonarx went on a rampage, scoring 5 straight or 6 straight if you count the tally just prior to the half. Incredible. He scored in every fashion you can imagine. Bombs from outside the white line at wicked angles. Beating defenders & then having the ball explode off his foot, & finding a corner of the Cheerio goal. Include in this resume', after getting behind defenders, & one on one with the keeper, beating him for a couple tap ins after the completely befuddled keeper fell to the turf, hands & arms flailing, grasping nothing but air. He was on a mission & he was unstoppable. He single handedly pulled the rest of the white shirts with him, reestablishing & then stretching the lead to 9-5. The confused & frustrated Cheerios had no answer.

Once the Cheerios fell behind, they played little defense, always pushing up, looking for a tally. This played perfectly into Vonarx hands & he continued to victimize the short handed Cheerio defense. A couple late window dressing goals by the Cheerios were of little use, as the white shirts continued to pile on by adding a couple more to the 9 tallys, and yet again, Vonarx was in the mix, assisting on both. The first was by Ryan Curry who hit a ball from the top of the box after receiving a Vonarx pass. There was a lot of traffic in the way & one of those was Gianni Pens, who screened the keeper & it flashed past him & into the back of the net. The final tally of the match was by Guillermo Cortez, and again on a Vonarx pass. Vonarx schooled a defender, & slotted a ball to a wide open Cortez who in turn, scorched a shot that whistled into the goal for the white shirts 11th tally of the match. All in all, Vonarx amassed for the evening, 6 goals & 3 assists. Out of 11 SSL tallys, Vonarx had a hand in 9 of them. That would be a good session for many players.

Although Vonarx obviously had a good time & a fabulous match, not so much for keeper Tony Meadows. Asked after the match if he had fun, he responded with a resounding "no"! The lack of team defense made his evening a nightmare. The match for the white shirts was sloppy from the outset. Slow starting led to careless & listless play. Many times the Cheerios, a very fast & elusive side, would attack in numbers & the forwards or midfielders would be slow getting back. The Cheerios took advantage of their numbers & banged home several tallys, keeping the white shirts on their heels.

But during the first half, not much luck was coming the SSL direction on defense. It's just a darn good thing there are two halves to every match, because the second half saw a much improved team defense from the white shirts as well as their increased energy level. They were sleepwalking no longer. Following the match, one of the SSL players made an interesting comment regarding the sluggish start & the sloppy defense. He said, "If we played mistake free soccer, we would be paid to play instead of paying to play". Can't argue with that.

So, once the Vonarx sideshow & this match concluded, there was only one thought on every ones mind. We have to do this again next week! As a result of some, shall we say, creative scheduling, the SSL side will meet the Cheerios again next week in a home & home match. I guess you could call this one the Vetta version of the Barclay's Premier League "Derby". In any case, these two sides will meet next week at 10pm on field #1. There should be no surprises this time around. But will there be another side show? We shall see. Let's just hope the white shirts are awake when the whistle blows this time around. See you then. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring: Kevin Vonarx, 6 goals & 3 helpers; Edin Coralic, 2 & 1; Gianni Pens, 1 & 1; Mike Bess & Tony Meadows, 2 helpers each; Guillermo Cortez & Ryan Curry, 1 goal each & Mike Hogan, 1 helper.

SSL O-40, 7, FNG, 4

40'S BURST 1ST PLACE FNG'S BUBBLE

STOP UNBEATEN STRING AT THREE

Just last week, FNG defeated two time defending champion, BWA 3-2, to stretch their record to 3-0, & leapfrog both Red Star & BWA, into first place, 2 points ahead of Red Star & 3 points ahead of BWA. With a win this week versus SSL, they'd cement their lead even more & it would be an odds on bet that they'd be rewarded with a championship berth this session. But then, something strange happened. They met the old guys, SSL O-40, & their championship reservation may well have been put on hold

This match, played on small field #3, was a blowout waiting to happen. Both sides feature high powered offenses, with each slinging hay makers at one another. But, in the midst of all this offensive hubbub, the white shirt defense stood tall. In one of their best defensive matches in some time, trying as much as possible to forget that forgettable 8 goal giveaway versus Red Star in week two, their defensive shape was present all match. And it needed to be. Entering this match, FNG had scored 19 & allowed only 5, for an incredible 14 goal differential. Believe me, entering the match, the white shirts were expecting the worst. It never happened.

The white shirts started quickly, which helped to put the FNG'ers on their heels a bit, & instilled a bit of confidence in the white shirts. Pushing up out of his defensive end, David Hipperson received a ball from Todd Loretta, also pushing up out of the back, & he crushed a ball that sailed past the FNG keeper for the first tally of the match. And that with only a minute gone in the match. Now, that's the way to start a game.

It was Hipperson again, pushing the SSL lead to 2-0. On a beautiful bang bang play, Edin Coralic, stationed in the FNG box with his back to the goal, received the ball from a SSL defender. Holding off his marker, he found hard charging Hipperson, sliding down the right side of the FNG box, with a crisp pass that Hipperson one timed, & blasted an absolute Bee Bee into the top right corner of the FNG goal for his second straight tally of the match. Only seven minutes had elapsed since the start of the match. The white shirts were energized. FNG was just trying to hang on. And they did so with gusto.

The FNG side is a lethal offensive weapon, as is witnessed by their goals for & differential. The white shirts, in spite of their tidy 2-0 lead, were not out of the woods. Not by a long shot. And in a blink, two tallys later, the white shirts were tied & wondering what happened & where did their lead go. The good news was, they were controlling the majority of play & getting most of the possession & chances. Good chances. Meanwhile, keeper Tony Meadows was having one of his best matches, not only turning aside the FNG shots, but allowing no rebounds or easy goals. Additionally, the white shirt defensive shape was blocking shots & stripping the FNG forwards of the ball. In spite of their two recent tallys, the SSL defense was doing a marvelous job suffocating the majority of the FNG offense, & frustrating their attack. And then it was Coralic's turn.

If turnabout is fair play, this was a perfect characterization of that. Coralic gave a ball to Hipperson, & now Hipperson would return the favor. Again, Hipperson was carrying the ball out of the back, which he did all match to the chagrin of the FNG'ers & he found Coralic at about the white line. He delivered him the ball & Coralic knew what to do with it. With his back to the goal, he collected it, turned to his left & hit a right footed bomb that rocketed into the upper right corner of the FNG goal, getting back the lead for the white shirts, at 3-2. Now he & Hipperson were even. And the next SSL tally was a beauty.

Jason Thomure, playing defense like a man possessed all evening, was moving into the offense & then running full tilt to get back & help out on defense. On one such opportunity, he had the ball in his own end, near the right side boards near the white line. Everyone had pulled over to that side, anticipating a play. Well, there was a play on all right, but only he & Kevin Vonarx knew it was on. Vonarx was camped, all by his lonesome, way up at the top, near the FNG goal line, inside the box. Thomure flighted him the ball. When it came down, it landed on Vonarx's foot & he needed only to do a tap redirect, & it scooted into the bottom left of the FNG goal, completely taking the keeper by surprise. The play was a thing of beauty. But, in spite of the second two goal lead for the white shirts, they were not out of the woods yet. FNG is a formidable opponent. They will not go quietly. And they didn't.

As if on cue, one of the white shirts bad habits cropped up again. They've been giving up a rash of last minute goals to their opponent lately, & the head of this ugly villain popped up again, in agonizing fashion. With under a minute left in the opening half, FNG possessed the ball, down around the SSL white line. However, there were four defenders & it didn't seem like a dangerous situation. But it was. On a pass to an FNG teammate, the ball bounced but the SSL defender was unable to cut it off. The FNGer controlled the pass, & slid to his left, across the top of the box. He hit rocket off his left foot that keeper Meadows was screened on by all the traffic & he had no chance. As the ball rolled into the back of the SSL goal, time expired. That narrowed the score to 4-3. Can you spell frustrating?

After the interval, the second half was all SSL. It was fast & furious & a little bit chippy. As SSL added tallys, FNG got a little more desperate & a little more chippy. They pushed up with all five, at times, sacrificing their defense. Kevin Vonarx took advantage. On one thwarted offensive sortie, Meadows collected the ball & found Vonarx with a long pass. Unmarked, he turned toward the goal, with a defender in hot pursuit. Moving to his right just outside the box, he hit a laser that the keeper, who had moved off his line to cut the angle, had not a chance as it whistled past him & into the back of the goal, giving the white shirts their two goal lead back at 5-3. And the hits just kept on coming.

The white shirts were on the attack again as a result of a counter. Ryan Curry found Gianni Pens with the ball in the box. He quickly put the ball down & hit a right footed shot thru traffic that banged in off the back of an FNG defender & into the back of the goal. 6-3 SSL.

Next up was Mike Hogan. Hogan had had a couple good opportunities earlier that the FNG keeper turned aside. Not this time. Guillermo Cortez carried the ball up the right side & found Hogan sitting on the door step. He served him a ball that he merely had to redirect past the keeper & into the back of the FNG goal, providing the white shirts with their largest lead of the evening at 7-3. As time was expiring, an FNG forward got a late window dressing goal, resulting in the final score of 7-4.

But it was clearly a hard fought win for the white shirts. Lot's of pushing, shoving, & a little trash talk, not to mention, a red card for a player from each team. But it was certainly a satisfying win. Lots of shots from both sides, an estimate being about 35, so to hold a prolific offensive side like FNG to 3 tallys in the first & only 1 in the second, is certainly something you could hang your hat on.

But, in spite of all the offense & on small field #3, this match was won with defense. The defensive shape of SSL, usually consisting of four players with a target man, sealed the deal. The FNGers were always in traffic. That makes it very, very tough to score. And it was.

Now the white shirts find themselves in a log jam for third place, tied with 3 others, all of which have 6 points. The only thing that will break this log jam will be wins and losses. So, on the heels of this win, in order to stay in the hunt, they'll have to continue to employ that defensive shape to perfection & log some more wins. And as an old friend of mine once said, "you're only as good as your last game, so hurry up and play another game." Couldn't have said it better myself.

Next up will be Cheerios, next week at 7:30 on field #1. The white shirts are finally done with field #3 for the session. Thank heavens. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  David Hipperson, 2 goals & 1 helper; Kevin Vonarx, 2 goals; Edin Coralic, 1 & 1; Mike Hogan & Gianni Pens, 1 goal each; Guillermo Cortez, Ryan Curry, Todd Loretta & Tony Meadows, 1 helper each.

SSL O-30, 4, ARSENAL, 3

LATE TALLY SAVES 30'S

STRETCH WIN STREAK TO 4

This was a tough one. Arsenal was amped up & ready to play when they hit the pitch. They were looking for a little payback. They very nearly got it.

Arsenal had dropped the last two meetings between these sides, 7-2 last session & the previous session, they came up short in the Championship match, 6-3. So, this match would be a no holds barred, take no prisoners contest. They were locked & loaded. And the match reflected that intensity from the outset.

The first few minutes of the match, the white shirts were a little short, with only two subs. More help would arrive at the interval, but for the time being, they needed to hold the fort. Arsenal was making that difficult. They had the better of the play early on, picking off errant SSL passes & converting them into scoring opportunities. But, the white shirts were doing a workmanlike job on the defensive end, keeping their shape, blocking shots, picking off passes, requiring keeper Tony Meadows to make only a couple difficult saves. But, Arsenal kept bringing it. They were living in the white shirt end.

With Arsenal pouring it on & the white shirts on their heels, offensive opportunities were few & far between. However, after about 10 minutes of a lot of back and forth, & with the Arsenal side spending far too much time in the white shirt defensive third, SSL capitalized on one of their few offensive sorties. And it was a beauty.

Carrying the ball out of his defensive end, Chris Gianino bolted up the left boards with the ball at his feet. As he crossed the center line, he spied Tony Sharamitaro making a run down the right side, & delivered a perfect ball at his feet. Sharamitaro collected the pass but still had to beat a defender. He did so spectacularly. Facing the defender with the ball just outside the right corner of the Arsenal box, he performed a perfect 360, ending up behind the defender, with the ball, & facing the goal. He made no mistake, blistering a shot to the far left corner of the Arsenal goal. The keeper had no chance. It was 1-0 SSL.

A sigh of relief was breathed by all the white shirts who had just spent the last 10 minutes furiously defending their own goal, & now they found themselves up in the match after taking advantage of one of their scarce opportunities. That spelled confidence & relief. But that confidence & relief was quickly eliminated.

The white shirts have fallen into a bad habit lately, in that, when they score, they give that tally right back to an opponent. Infuriating. Whether it's lack of attention, complacency or just bad luck, tallys they've worked so hard for are carelessly given back. And that was the case once again. And then some. Less then two minutes after their hard earned tally, not only had the white shirts given back the tying tally, but one-upped that by giving them yet a second tally to provide Arsenal their first lead of the match. Aggressive play by the Arsenal side, coupled with sloppy play on the white shirt side was the difference. The Arsenal side is too good to miss on those chances.

So, after ten minutes of play, SSL netted the first tally of the match only to give two back a minute later. Frustration quickly set in. SSL was MIA on offense & at times, non existent on defense. And those two Arsenal tallys were followed by two more excellent chances by Arsenal, but some acrobatic goal keeping by Meadows kept the white shirts in the match, as both teams rode that score to the interval. The frustration for SSL would continue, however.

At the interval, help arrived in the form of Jeremy Maue & Ryan Curry. Both would contribute greatly. But Gianino got it all started for the white shirts in the second. With a deeper bench the white shirts were able to shorten their shifts & had a little extra giddy up in their game. They started spending more time in the Arsenal end. A lot more time. That resulted in more shots. On one such sortie, Joe Sharamitaro, a magician with the ball, even when double teamed, did just that on this play, & stepped around two markers. He hit a looping shot from outside the white line that hit just above the crossbar. As the ball caromed down, Gianino, always in motion, pounced on the rebound and banged it home from just a couple feet away. The keeper had no chance. That tied it at 2.

The white shirts took their second lead of the match on a sweet play involving Maue & Curry. Curry had the ball out around midfield & saw Maue make a run toward the box from the corner. He sent a long ball towards him that landed at his feet just short of the goal line. Sneaking in behind a defender, he only had to redirect it with a one touch to push it into the back of the net. It was a bang bang play. 3-2 SSL. It wouldn't last.

Once again, the quick goal struck. I just don't know why this happens but, it happens all too often. Less than a minute after the Maue tally, the Arsenal side knotted the score on a ball that banged in off the back of a defender that, had he not changed the direction, Meadows would have been able to make the stop. But that's why they play the game. And the old saying "if you don't shoot, you won't score", was never more true. It was all tied at 3.

But the white shirts were starting to control more of the play. For the match, possession was tilted in favor of SSL about 60-40, but the first half, not so much. It was pretty even, with possession perhaps even leaning a bit toward the Arsenal side. But the second half was a different game. The white shirts were moving the ball smartly, playing the keeper, making runs & they had dramatically tightened up their defensive shape. For the half, Meadows had to make perhaps 5 or 6 saves compared to about 10 for the 1st. On the other end, the white shirts were buzzing about, making a nuisance of themselves, forcing the Arsenal side to foul.

On two such fouls, David Hipperson, designated foul shot taker, hit two absolute bombs, one to the left corner & the other to the right corner. The Arsenal keeper, unbelievably, made spectacular saves on each, when everyone in the building were writing them into their scorecards. But, the offensive pressure continued to build for the white shirts. It would net a result in lightening like fashion.

Curry again was in on this play. He controlled the ball in the left corner of the pitch with a defender on him. As he turned to his left with the ball, he spied Hipperson, making a run out of his defensive position. About the time he got to the white line, Curry delivered him the ball. In stride, Hipperson hit an absolute rocket that sizzled past the keeper & into the goal for the white shirts third, & final, lead of the match. 4-3 SSL.

As time ran out, things got a little chippy, as you might expect in this fierce battle for first place between two high powered sides. But, the white shirts were able to hold on & close it out, posting their 4th win in as many matches for the session, maintaining their hold on first place. And there was much riding on the match. Entering the contest, the white shirts were 3-0 & in first place. Arsenal was 3 points behind in third with a 2-1 record. Hoosier FC was in second with a bye.

Had Arsenal won this match, they would have leap frogged Hoosier with their 3-1 record. The white shirts would have also been 3-1, but, with the loss to Arsenal, even though records would be identical, in the tie breaking rules, SSL would be behind due to head to head. So, in effect, the white shirts would have dropped to third & perhaps missed a chance at a 5th consecutive championship berth. There was indeed, a lot riding on the match.

Next up for the first place white shirts will be a 7:10 match on field #2 versus Freaky Shakra in two weeks, following a bye next week. They'll be trying to make it 5 wins in a row in a session for the first time since November of 2009, & overall, trying to make it 10 wins in a row & 11 matches in a row without a defeat, going back to last session. However, they have a long way to go to match or beat their incredible all time record of 16 matches in a row without a defeat, & that goes back to April of 2009. Either way, it'll be fun. Hope to see you at the next match. Thanks for reading.

Match Scoring:  Chris Gianino, 1 goal & 1 helper; Ryan Curry, 2 helpers; David Hipperson, Jeremy Maue & Tony Sharamitaro, 1 goal each & Joe Sharamitaro, 1 helper.
