Contest Alert!

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than the ones you did do.  So, throw off the bowlines.    Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore Dream Discover."  Mark Twain
So these words are ringing in my head as I prepare to take a vacation!  My son will experience his first plane ride this weekend as he, my dad and I travel to Phoenix to see relatives and explore.  I have booked a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon and we have Phoenix Suns tickets, all that and some warm weather and we should be able to relax.

I use this as a lead in to something new in my Marquette Minute Blog….a contest!  In conjunction with the Landmark Inn I am holding a write in contest open to all.  What is your favorite Friday night activity in Marquette?  The contest drawing will be held in my office the afternoon of May 1st and the winner will receive a gift certificate for a dinner for 2 at The Landmark Inn’s Capers restaurant (value $ 70.00).  For your chance to win, email blog@StephanieSells.com with your answer to the question, What is your favorite Friday night activity in Marquette? Please include your Name, address and a phone number. Any submissions may be used in a future Blog.

For the Landmark Inn the first Friday of every month is …FASHION FRIDAY! Meet your friends and enjoy piano music, wine and a fashion show. Diane Tonella is reintroducing this monthly fashion show favorite, featuring the new boutique fashions of “Mary’s Closet.” The fashion show is casual in the round style, with an opportunity to touch fabrics and ask about pricing.
Don’t miss the next FASHION FRIDAY, April 4, 5 – 7 p.m. in the Landmark Inn Lobby.
With April fast approaching I am anticipating some decent first quarter statistics to report next month. I personally am significantly ahead of last years first quarter. Today’s interest rates are 6.125% for a 30 year fixed rate loan according to Julie Hartung from U.P. Mortgage Specialists.

Spring in Marquette

Happy First Day of Spring!

So the usual first day of spring is here, cold and for now a sunny day. But we can be assured that spring (aka the season of mud) will be here about a month later than the rest of the world.

I want to highlight one real estate item that is happening more in the rest of the world than it is here in Marquette County, subprime nightmares. According to CNNMoney.com “many homeowners who were subject to predatory lending practices - including brokers who misrepresented payments - are trying to rework their loans. Few are having any luck.” Although this is not as big of a problem in our area, it has still happened. I firmly believe in local lenders for precisely this reason. I like to know that if needed I can look a lender in the eye and ask what is going on. With the explosion of online and 1-800- type lenders, buyers are often getting short changed.

“It Could Be Worse” Patricia Pearce, (my grandmother)
What a year this has been so far. I find myself repeating my grandmother’s words often. Perfect example was a postcard SNAFU yesterday when my poor proofreading skills allowed me to miss 1 critical ingredient in the ingredient list in Brunch Bake recipe I wanted sent out before Easter. Yes it could have been worse; I could have found the error after I had sent out 600 postcards, so that’s a good thing. But I found the error before sending and my whole office chipped in and found a solution, got the postcards corrected, addressed, stamped and sent within 3 hours. I guess that’s how you know you are in the right office!  If anyone has a recipe for me to try please send it to me recipe@stephaniesells.com.

And finally, with all the Easter Emails making the rounds, I am sharing my favorite Easter comic.

Saint Patricks Day and The Car Show

"I work hard because I love my work."
Bill Gates (1955 - )
American businessman, founder and chairman of Microsoft

I love quotes. I always have. I subscribe to several online daily quote providers and I have a dedicated quote tab in iGoogle. If you have a favorite quote please share it with me!

Another hard worker is Phil Joffee at  Public Service Garage. In anticipation of the UP Auto Show March 14th -16th at the Dome I spoke to Phil and asked him about the current market. According to Phil the auto financing rates are the lowest they have seen in 5 or 6 years. Many trucks are offering 0% financing for 60 months. They also anticipate bringing as many program cars as new cars to the Dome this weekend.

(Irish: Lá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy's Day or Paddy's Day, is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick (circa 385–461 AD), one of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on March 17.

Saint Patrick's Day

Check out Wikipedia for more information about the ever popular social holiday. Find a few fun facts such as “although Saint Patrick's Day has the color green as its theme, one little known fact is that blue was once the color associated with this day.” Little fun facts to share while drinking a green beer or a GUINNESS® at Stuckos Pub & Grill, Flanigan's Bar or any of your favorite watering holes! According to Mary Pace, my coworker at Select Realty, whose birthday is March 18th and therefore is a connoisseur of Corned Beef and Cabbage, the best to be found in Marquette is found at Pat's Bar.  But remember to be responsible, according to a U of M study research has shown that all drivers have a 23 percent increased likelihood of being injured or killed by a driver who is impaired by alcohol on St. Patrick’s Day. So have fun but be safe! For more information on staying safe check out the  Patrick's Day drinking tips from U of M Health System. When in doubt call any of Marquette’s cab services!

Local Economic Impact

Number crunching and spouting statistics seems to be a sport with REALTORS, and Select Realty is no different. But I am proud to share this number $112,633.25. This number is the amount of money that Select Realty would have sent in 2007 to a corporate headquarters if we were a franchised company. I came to Select Realty in 1994 partly because all of our money stayed in the area and was not sent away to a franchise headquarters. To see that number become so large makes me very proud to be with this locally owned company.

MediaBox is another local company that is making a national splash with a new product. Check out webblz - Little People... Big Business! I expect this to be the biggest trend in web sites in the upcoming months. MediaBox also produced my last Recipe Postcard and the feedback has been that people were surprised I was able to have it done locally.  I think people would be amazed at the number of local companies doing national work out of offices based in Marquette County.

On a personal note I have decided that I am not going to run for one of the open Marquette City Commissioner spots. Although the community support has been overwhelming I feel that the time isn’t right for my family, but I may be interested in the future. I do hope that we can get some new fresh blood to run.
