Five February Fridays

Five February Fridays!
Five Fridays in February, how cool is that? Not only is Leap Year an interesting part of our calendar but this year it is giving us an extra Friday. According to Time and Date.com “A calendar similar to the Julian calendar, with every fourth year earmarked as a leap year, was first introduced by King Ptolemy III of Egypt in 238 BC” Americans have used the Gregorian calendar since September 1752. Time and Date.com has plenty more interesting Leap Year facts.

I was watching MSNBC on Wednesday early morning when I was quite surprised to see our own Superior Dome on the screen. They were showing the WLUC footage of an amazing catch at this past weekend Jaycee Indoor Softball Tournament. I love seeing Marquette on any national news for something fun and positive. You can see the footage at WLUC TV6 and MSNBC check it out! According to early estimates Marquette Jaycees hope to have raised 10,000 for Special Olympics this year.

Another fun family event this weekend is Take a Child to the Trails Day at the Forestville Trail Head from 1-4 on Saturday. Hosted by Superiorland Ski Club, Noquemanon Trail Network & Down Wind Sports! For more info check out the NTN | The Noquemanon Trail Network

February 22, 2008
Well it may be cold but at least it is a sunny day!
The talk among some local REALTORS this week has been that we are surprised at how the market seems fairly busy for this time of year. I pulled up the numbers and found that in the first 52 days of 2007 there were 113 residential properties in Marquette County that either closed or got an accepted offer on them. For 2008 there are 91 residential properties that either closed went pending. Although the number is lower it is not as low as many national pundits are projecting. I expect the market to be fairly balanced this year.
Just a reminder that the Dome has some awesome men’s softball this weekend, please check it out! Welcome to Softball In The Dome.com
Now is the time for my BLOG to get interactive.  I have been asked for my opinion on the availability of local information on the web.  Please let me know what you have looked for locally and could not find, or what you would like to see in a great local web site.
Last but not least…I have been asked to run for Marquette’s City Commission. I am currently in the decision-making process but I am considering it. This election year there will be at least 3 seats available. I think there are other people like me in the community who may have something to give back to the city as well. If you can think of anyone in the city of Marquette who would be an asset to our community have them give me a call. Over the years so many talented people have served maybe it is time for the next generation of Marquette to step up and get involved.

Valentines Day

Happy Valentines Day!
So many things going on, from raising money to running dogs to flying on skis! I hope people make the time to take in something fun this weekend. The Lake Superior Community Partnership (AKA Chamber of Commerce) has an updated Marquette County calendar so check it out for specifics.

At Select Realty we feel the year has started off well.  2 of the homes I have under contract were sold within 24 hours of being listed.  Bruce Closser from Closser and Associates presented his annual Marquette Area Residential Market Analysis for 2007 to the North Central Multiple Listing Service yesterday and there were some surprising results.  The number of total residential sales in the survey area in 2007 was 264 compared to 291 in 2006 but there was only an average of 175 available listings vs. 171 in 2006.  The number of days on the market went from 107 in 2006 to 121 in 2007.  But the Median sale price actually rose 2% to 150,000.  Bruce agreed with me that these numbers show that we are at this moment in a fairly balanced market.

Last week I shared some organizational tips so this week I will share the latest computer tool that has grabbed my attention.  I am thoroughly enjoying my new web portal iGoogle. It does everything I need.  It is completely customizable to my tastes.  It puts “gadgets” (or widgets) of my choice on my home screen.  For example, I have one page of news feeds from People to Fox News to Rolling Stone all updated all the time.  I have another tabbed page of daily information from exercise tips of the day to pictures of places to see before you die.  So many of the places that are in “my favorites” (web sites) have a “gadget” that can be on my home page which gives me the info I want at my fingertips! I encourage people to check it out.

Sunny February Thoughts

Check out these links when you have time. But do not get overwhelmed with the idea of spring cleaning, take 1 room at a time and look forward to the end results, remember household cleaning burns approximately 317 calories an hour!
On the local front I wanted to point out a couple of upcoming events. Feb 14th at Upfront is the Save The Roses fundraiser for the local Room at the Inn program. What could be sweeter than this: Joining friends this Valentine's Day for appetizers, beer/wine, and silent auction and dancing -- all to benefit the "Room at the Inn" shelter for the area's homeless.
Cost is $25 per person. Please mail payment by Feb. 11 to Mary Diddams: 318 E. Crescent in Marquette. Checks can be made payable to Room at the Inn.
4-H Chili Benefit Dinner & Auction, Wed., Feb. 20, 6-8PM, $5 admission, Marquette Armory, 1820 Lincoln Ave. Three 4-H members Heather Bertucci, Ashley and Lindsey Veale lost their fathers in 2007. All proceeds go into a college fund for them. Tickets can be purchased at the door or at 2 locations:Donckers, Masonic Square, 130 W. Washington (226-6110) Monday-Saturday 9-5:30, Sunday 10-5 Riding Club, 201 N. Front (228-9033) Monday-Saturday 10-5
And finally Feb 21-24 the Marquette Jaycees are hosting the Softball In The Dome tournament to benefit Special Olympics. There are great softball games being played in the dome all weekend long with over 20 teams from all over the Midwest. A side warning is that the teams will be hitting local bars & restaurants with a vengeance! It is great to see the local economic impact of events like this.
