Military Family Benefits that you need to know about |
Our Country has went along way in caring for the Soldiers who defend and serve us as well as their loved ones. Here are some new benefits and services that need to be passed along to the Families of our Heros:
Federal Employment Made Easier for Military Spouses: President Bush signed an executive order allowing hiring managers for all federal agencies to hire qualified military spouses without going through the competitive process of advertising the job. The executive order will apply to spouses of active-duty members on PCS orders, spouses of 100% disabled, retired or separated military members, or unremarried widows or widowers of a military member who is killed while on active duty. The new hiring authorities will not be put into place until the next year.
Raytheon "Thanks" Military Children with a Free Book: To thank the children of the military for their daily sacrifices in the name of protecting America's freedom, Raytheon Company is sponsoring the distribution of the holiday book "It's a Family Thanksgiving! A Celebration of an American Tradition for Children and Their Families." This educational gift will be donated to military families upon request through AUSA Family Programs. To receive your free copy, please send an email to familyprograms@ausa.org with your mailing address. The copies will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. Please limit your request to two copies per mailing address.
Commissary's Scholarship Program for Military Children Opens November 3rd: Beginning November 3rd, scholarship applications will be available in commissaries worldwide and online through https://www.commissaries.com or http://www.militaryscholar.org. Dependent, unmarried children (under the age 23) of active duty personnel, reserve/guard and retired military members, survivors of service members who died while on active duty or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military may apply for a scholarship. All applicants must be planning to attend, or already be attending, an accredited college or university full time in the Fall of 2009, or be enrolled in a program of studies designed to transfer directly into a four-year program.
Free YMCA Membership for Families of Deployed Servicemembers: The Department of Defense (DoD) announced that families of deployed members of the National Guard and Reserve, active-duty Servicemembers on independent duty and families, and active-duty Servicemembers and families assigned to selected bases are eligible for free family memberships at participating YMCAs. To sign up for the program, families must complete a YMCA/DoD eligibility form, available at http://www.militaryonesource.com, and provide a copy of deployment orders and a military ID to their local YMCA.
Golden Corral Restaurants Salute America's Heroes: On Monday, November 17, from 5 to 9pm, all 485 Golden Corral restaurants across America will offer any person who has served in the United States Military a free "thank you" dinner buffet and beverage (no identification is required). This is the eighth year Golden Corral restaurants have honored Servicemembers. In addition to the dinner, now until November 17th, Golden Corral's guest may send a personal greeting to America's military personnel on active duty overseas by filling out a postcard available at all Golden Corral restaurants. The postcards will be delivered to the troops prior to the holidays. To find a Golden Corral near you, go to http://www.goldencorral.com/.
