Public Art Taken to Next Level in San Clemente

Jan. 21, 2009

Avenida Del MarSan Clemente, a small coastal town in South Orange County, is rich in history and has a deep appreciation of fine arts and culture.  From Casa Romantica to the San Clemente Art Association, residents and guests of San Clemente are treated to a variety of works that celebrate San Clemente's history and coastal lifestyle.  According to this article in the Orange County Register, San Clemente is creating a new palette of work for people to enjoy.  This past Monday, the San Clemente Historical Society, with help from the City of San Clemente and the Downtown Business Association, began installing the first of 14 proposed tile murals on a bench area in front of Hotel San Clemente at 114 Avenida Del Mar.  Dubbed the "Landmarks on Del Mar" program, the tile murals will depict artful representations of historical San Clemente buildings.  The first mural showcases what Hotel San Clemente looked like when it opened in 1928, and a second mural coming later this week will depict San Clemente's historic movie theater.  Future murals will depict such wide-ranging historical buildings as city founder Ole Hanson's old office, the Beachcomber Motel, and the Casino Ballroom.

Completion of the proposed 14 murals will be a great addition to an already thriving Avenida Del Mar and is dependent on donations to the Historical Society.  If you are interested in sponsoring one of the murals or would like to make a donation to this great San Clemente cause, please visit the Society's website or contact the group's president, Mike Cotter, at (949) 322-6009.
