What’s that Cloud Blanket over the City of Brunswick?

It is a WiFi service area that provides wireless service all over the city. When I initially heard about the City of Brunswick’s plan, I only thought of the benefits of private citizens being able to get online for free. But the main stimulus for the City was to aid the Police Department and the Fire Department in better and more effectively attending to needs. Cameras placed at strategic spots can record live video streams and store the video for approximately 2 weeks. The Police Chief, Edna Johnson, was excited of the ability to see what’s going on while it was happening. Field Officers are able to write up reports without having to drive back to the Police Department. 
 
Kudos to the City of Brunswick for investing in this system to keep our city safe and protected and even better, it’s something we can all use!

Florida Oranges, Grapefruits & Live Gators!

I am a resident of Glynn County but have been coming here even back in the dark ages with my parents & siblings as a visitor. I remember when the state highways were the mode of transportation rather than the quicker moving interstate highways. When we came south to Florida or to vacation on Jekyll Island, Highway 17 was an extremely vital roadway.   I don’t know exactly the year when I-95 came through Southeast GA, but I think it was in the early 70’s. As a child, I remember traveling Hwy. 17 and the many thriving hotels, restaurants and tourist stands selling oranges & grapefruits and other tourist memorabilia as you passed through each town. Does anyone else remember the signs advertising viewing live alligators in tanks?   After the Interstate came through so many of the businesses either closed up or relocated closer to the interstate exits. 
 
But interestingly enough, the stretch of Highway 17 going through Brunswick is experiencing a resurgence of activity. Abandoned buildings and outdated, rundown properties are being bought, razed and new construction is widespread. As in all things, commerce seems to run in cycles, and Brunswick as a whole, and certainly this stretch of highway, is seeing a revival.

P.S. – An interesting tidbit on the US interstate highway system is that it was initiated by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 and lobbied for by President Eisenhower. Eisenhower was so impressed with the German autobahn network when he served as a young soldier that he championed our country improving our highway transportation system. (Note: for more information go to Wikipedia and search Interstate Highway System)
