The Annual GA Bulldog vs. FL Gators Football Classic is this weekend!

Oct. 31, 2008
Categorized in: Just for Fun!

This annual rivalry between the University of GA and the University of FL football programs has been going on for enough years to earn the Bulldogs 46 recorded wins and the Gators 37 wins and 2 tied games!  Jacksonville, FL has long been the site for this game at the Municipal Stadium which is also the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars pro football team. While Jacksonville may be a neutral venue, it is located only 73 miles from Gainesville, FL which is the home town for the Gators. Athens, GA, home for the Bulldogs, is 342 miles north. These avid fans have made a science of tailgating in the parking lots and also at the Jacksonville Landing which faces the St. Johns River.

Even Wikipedia attributes the nickname “The Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” to this highly touted game. I am sure both schools sincerely wish that title was never born as that is not the kind of message any athletic program wants to convey. But, I know there will be a lot of parties and excitement over the game right here on St. Simons Island. Busses and campers and cars emblazoned with “Bulldawg” flags are arriving for lodging here as we are only 45 minutes away from Saturday’s game. Merchants, restaurants and other retailers are hopeful for a significant infusion into our local economy. Whether or not these businesses follow the game, we all welcome the fans which come every year and enjoy the products and services we render.

Game kick-off will be a 3:30 and televised if you are more inclined to watch in your recliner at home.

We Love our GA Bulldawgs!

This Saturday, August 30th, kicks off the 2008 Football Season with the Dawgs going up against the GA Southern Eagles between the hedges. But the game that is a phenomenal draw to our area and specifically St. Simons Island, is the GA/FLClassic held in Jacksonville, FL. on November 1st. This game is rivalry personified to say the very least. This game has been named one of the top ten football rivalries by ESPN, College Football News, The Sporting News, Fox Sports and America’s Best Online.

Bulldog fans have long enjoyed the commentary of Atlanta’s legendary radio voice, Larry Munson. Larry underwent surgery recently, and the Bulldog Nation is extremely hopeful that he will be the familiar voice announcing for the 43rd Season. Mr. Munson coined the phrase for the GA/FL weekend for St. Simons as “the world’s largest cocktail party” which is certainly indicative of a lot of fans and fun going on for the build-up to this very special game.
We are handling rentals and property management now and are already getting calls from individuals getting their plans set for that timeframe.   Give us a call if you’d like to plan your trip to the Golden Isles of GA.

The Bulldog Fans have Landed!

Our business and home is on St. Simons Island in Southeast GA. Thousands of avid University of GA football fans come in several days prior to the annual GA Bulldog/FL Gators face off in Jacksonville this Saturday afternoon. The traffic is already getting heavy with many vehicles displaying team flags in their windows and lots of tags with that big black "G" on a red background. I just sat down to read yesterday's local newspaper and the Golden Isles tourism prediction is that this event brings an estimated $1 million a day to our area! Two of my three children run a barbeque restaurant and last year the GA/FL weekend rivaled the July 4th sales.
I believe it may have been Larry Munson, long-time announcer of Bulldog Football, who hailed St. Simons Island on this weekend as the World's Largest Cocktail Party. I am not attending the game, but will be in the office hoping to meet some of the visitors who are interested in masking this special place their home.

Never a Dull Moment!

We have recently expanded our real estate business into a building we've remodeled adjacent to our electric car rental business known as Beachcomber Buggies. On the other side of the real estate office, my husband is opening up a snow cone operation as well! He is hoping to have that business up and running by this weekend when the thousands of GA Bulldog fans arrive in mass to attend the GA/FL football game held yearly in Jacksonville, FL. My daughter was in this afternoon preparing for the anticipated additional volume in the family barbeque business, Beachcomber Barbeque, several blocks down. All in all, life is good, very diverse and has never a dull moment. I hope that if you are ever on St. Simons Island, you'll pop in at least one of our endeavors and introduce yourself.
We are living the Beachcomber Lifestyle and invite you to come on down and try it on for size!
