Florida Oranges, Grapefruits & Live Gators!

Aug. 25, 2007
Categorized in: Just for Fun!

I am a resident of Glynn County but have been coming here even back in the dark ages with my parents & siblings as a visitor. I remember when the state highways were the mode of transportation rather than the quicker moving interstate highways. When we came south to Florida or to vacation on Jekyll Island, Highway 17 was an extremely vital roadway.   I don’t know exactly the year when I-95 came through Southeast GA, but I think it was in the early 70’s. As a child, I remember traveling Hwy. 17 and the many thriving hotels, restaurants and tourist stands selling oranges & grapefruits and other tourist memorabilia as you passed through each town. Does anyone else remember the signs advertising viewing live alligators in tanks?   After the Interstate came through so many of the businesses either closed up or relocated closer to the interstate exits.

But interestingly enough, the stretch of Highway 17 going through Brunswick is experiencing a resurgence of activity. Abandoned buildings and outdated, rundown properties are being bought, razed and new construction is widespread. As in all things, commerce seems to run in cycles, and Brunswick as a whole, and certainly this stretch of highway, is seeing a revival.

I’m very excited about what is happening in my little part of the world and if I can answer any questions or assist you in any way, please contact me. I’m living the Beachcomber Lifestyle and I’m loving it!

P.S. – An interesting tidbit on the US interstate highway system is that it was initiated by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 and lobbied for by President Eisenhower. Eisenhower was so impressed with the German autobahn network when he served as a young soldier that he championed our country improving our highway transportation system. (Note: for more information go to Wikipedia and search Interstate Highway System)

Shrimp & Grits - Eat up Sailor!

Jekyll Island’s Shrimp & Grits Festival

                                                                         September 14 – 16, 2007

What in the world is more authentic southern cooking than Shrimp & Grits?  The only food that might rival that selection may be collard greens & ham hocks!   I don’t want to be negligent in not notifying you of the upcoming Shrimp & Grits Festival to be held in mid-September.  If sampling the cook-off entries for the very best shrimp & grits entry is not enough to draw you, throw in music, a golf tournament, shrimp boat tours and vendors with arts, crafts & antiques set up under the unparalleled moss draped oaks in the Island’s historic district.  Celebrity Chefs will be giving shows, and one of them is none other than Paul Deen’s baby brother, Uncle Bubba, who is the owner of Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House in Savannah.  The first time I ever-viewed shrimp & grits being served up in a champagne glass was on one of Paula Deen’s Food TV shows.  Now it has become the trendy item to offer at cocktail parties everywhere.  Somehow, probably by mistake, I was included in a holiday party last season at The Cloister Hotel and even they had shrimp & grits on their buffet table!  Need I point out, all the shrimp offered will be Wild Georgia Shrimp & not some farm raised product from who only knows where!

If you want to view more information on the event & check out the specials hotels are offering, see: www.jekyllisland.com/shrimpandgrits/

I sincerely hope you will give me a call if you have any questions on this event or if I may be of service.

I found a website you must cruise!

I was put on to this wonderful website by a lady I work with whose son is a student at the local Coastal Community College here in Brunswick. A young professor there at the college, Tyler E. Bagwell, is a budding historian and has showcased his phenomenal body of research on our area on www.jekyllislandhistory.com.
The photo gallery alone captivated me for a couple of hours today and each photo has an article you can read more detail on. I learned that Sea Island wasn't initially called by that name, but rather Long Island! Another riveting piece of info is that the very 1st transcontinental phone call was made from Jekyll Island by a Mr. Vail, the 1st president of A T & T to none other than Alexander Graham Bell on January 15, 1915! The photos of the Oglethorpe Hotel in downtown Brunswick & the site of the train terminal where the wealthy elite came & were transported by boat to Jekyll Island reveal the beauty of the day.
Whether you are familiar with our remarkable Coastal area or not, I definitely encourage
you to peruse this extraordinary body of work by Mr. Bagwell. I was hard pressed to pry myself away, so plan on a little time cruising through the photo gallery. If you don't bookmark this website, I'll be surprised!

The Port of Brunswick is on The Rise!

Jul. 29, 2007
Categorized in: General Information

Did you know the Port of Brunswick is now considered the fastest growing port in North America? In 2004, the ports of Savannah & Brunswick produced combined gross revenues of $35 billion!   Thanks to the multi million $ federal funding allocation, the dredging project to deepen the Brunswick port to 36 ft. harbor is nearly complete. GA House Majority Leader was quoted “The port of Brunswick is the economic engine of Coastal GA. Aside from tourism, it’s the key to the regional economy . . .driving the rest of the economy.” The portside rail lines & close access to I-95 make our Port very attractive to shippers of not only cars but also other heavy equipment & agri-products.

With this much activity & growth, our area continues to enjoy a brisker real estate market than other national averages.   Give me a call if you want more information on making this Coastal GA paradise your own!
