• - St. Simons Island is #2 in Money Magazine!

WOW!!! Did you see the new Money Magazine? They have ranked St. Simons Island #2 in the COUNTRY for places to retire! You can see a snipit here: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bpretire/2006/

However, they left out 2 other very good reasons to retire here: if you establish this as your primary home, the assessed value of your home is LOCKED IN, so increases in your taxes are moderated which is very important for most retirees. Additionally, while they point out that we are on the coast and subject to hurricanes, they neglect to mention that if you are looking to retire on the coast, there is probably no safer place. When America's richest of the rich decided to purchase an island in the late 1800's for their winter retreats, they selected one of the westernmost points of the eastern seacoast. They chose Jekyll Island, a sister island easily visible from the southend of St. Simons Island . Historically, our location has sheltered us well. I've lived here since 1985, and my family in WV has had much more damage from hurricanes there than we have here on St. Simons Island. Of course we could get hit with a hurricane tomorrow, but what location is immune to a disaster? Overall, we're tucked in from the Gulf Stream, so if I'm going to be on the coast (and I am!), I want to be here.

Thanks for visiting my blog! Actually, St. Simons Island is still one of the more affordable resort areas. Many areas such as the FL and SC coasts are getting hit with much increased velocity insurance rates, and also many are hit with significantly higher taxes. It's not uncommon for FL residents to have tax and insurance bills total over $10,000 for a 2BR condo! While our insurance rates have risen, we're in line with the rest of the country. And, our property taxes are still about 1% of property value.
As for other comparable areas, condos on Kiawah Island, SC start in the $300K's, and their average condo sold for $700K last year. We still have a few condos listed at under $200K, and the average sales price for a condo on the south-end of St. Simons sold for $537K. So we can still experience significant appreciation while living the good life!

I’m currently looking for a retirement home. I’ve done well for myself and I’m retiring a bit early due to a bit of penny pinching I involved myself in the last 20 years. I’ve been looking for some St. Simons Island real estate as I not only would like to move down there after retirement but I have several friends in that area as well as some close family. I’m currently out here in California which makes it difficult to see these people so I’m looking forward to retirement and hopefully in that area. June of 2008 is my goal so I’m hoping to get the housing part taken care of as quickly as I can.

My wife and I had to relocate to the East Coast due to a new job opportunity and as my employer has two offices we had to choices, one was Georgia the other was Florida. After looking at some Boca Raton real estate we knew were we wanted to take up residence. Your area is indeed nice though and its not hard to see why its listed as number 2!
