• Sep. 22, 2008 - Update on Jekyll Island from the JIA Executive Director

I have never received as much response from a blog article than my June 18th post and then my response posted June 20th on the topic of the revitalization project on Jekyll Island. Just last week, the Jekyll Island Authority Executive Director, Jones Hooks, sent an email update on information that was shared at their 9/15/08 board meeting. They had contracted an independent research firm, Bleakly and Associates, to do a study analysis on the visitation numbers. According to this report, the island visitation peaked in the 1988-89 time period with approximately 2.1 million guests visiting Jekyll. Regrettably since that time, there has been a steady decline in visitation. Last year only 1.49 million visitors came to Jekyll which is down roughly 23% from the 1988-89 figures.

The good news is that visitation can be increased with limited redevelopment. Jekyll has approximately 4226 acres, and is mandated by law that 65% of it must remain undeveloped. Of the remaining 35%, only 256 acres or 6% is directly impacted. Most of that portion is already developed with existing hotels and the convention center.

The Bleakly and Associates’ detailed study will be presented in a public meeting on September 29th at 2:00 pm at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. For more current information and events on Jekyll Island, go to their website at www.jekyllisland.com

As I ended my June 20th post, "Discussion is good; it is important for the public to be aware AND involved.."

• Sep. 17, 2008 - Voter Registration deadlines are fast approaching!

In the State of GA, the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming November elections is October 6th. With the unprecedented Presidential election this year, I hope every one of us will encourage anyone we know not registered to vote to make their application within the next couple of weeks. I am placing a link below that Georgia residents can go to for registration:

We all have our own opinions and political beliefs, and I certainly respect other peoples choices even if they differ from my own. Every vote counts and we all need to utilize the privilege of making our voices heard. In these tumultuous times, everyone needs to be involved in this very important process, watch the debates and try to make the most informed decision we can.

• Sep. 10, 2008 - What's Cookin' in Southeast Coastal GA?

What’s cooking is a competition to find the best Brunswick stew entry out of 50+ teams’ best effort. The annual Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee event will be held on October 17th and 18th at Mary Ross Waterfront Park in downtown Brunswick, GA. In addition to good food, the well known and popular band KC & The Sunshine Band will entertain with some new tunes and old favorites such as GET DOWN TONIGHT, THAT’S THE WAY I LIKE IT and SHAKE YOUR BOOTY. If moving and grooving to those songs is not enough action, a 5K race is planned, a car show and vendors with their best arts and crafts.

A link follows if you’d like to read more on making a trip for this fun event. I must say, October and November are unusually great months to enjoy the Golden Isles.

I am assuming that everyone knows about the rivalry between Brunswick, GA and Brunswick County in southern Virginia.  Here in Glynn County we state that the first Brunswick Stew was cooked on nearby St. Simons Island in 1898. Natives of Brunswick County, VA, claim that a Virginia state legislator invented the recipe in 1928 on a hunting expedition and everyone was immediately hooked. No one can say with a certainty which actually made the meaty concoction first, but we definitely know how to make it now. My oldest son and daughter operate Beachcomber BBQ, and have their version which is a very popular item on the menu.

Plan a visit to the Golden Isles of GA this Fall and see why so many others have chosen to make it their home.

• Sep. 5, 2008 - Beach Party 2008

Just last month we had our 2nd Beachcomber Beach Party at the beach in front of the Coast Guard Station on St. Simons Island.  50+ friends, clients and agents from our office joined us for a late afternoon picnic.

Here I am attempting to keep the skirt of my dress from flying over my head!

This is Russell and Katrina who just closed on their new home last week.

The weather cooperated famously providing a wonderful coastal breeze that kept away bugs who might have wanted to join in and provided more August outdoor pleasure.

The gentleman is our friend Doug Blanton, a local home inspector, and his grandson.

From left, Ed Stoddard, Nancy Lawman and Janice Adams who are agents with our company.

The boy is my grandson, Lance, with one of our clients on left and my daughter in law, Terri, on right.

This fellow is my "Baby" Jason.

My Grandaughter, Amelia, is on the left with her buddy.

Old and new friends along with ocean breezes and sand dunes make for a great evening.

I am so grateful for the clients who have become my friends and enriched my life significantly.  If these beach photographs inspire you to make a visit to the Golden Isles of South GA, please give me a call and look me up.  Any opportunity to share this delightful area is most welcome.

Regards,

Sally
