• Aug. 27, 2008 - We Love our GA Bulldawgs!
This Saturday, August 30th, kicks off the 2008 Football Season with the Dawgs going up against the GA Southern Eagles between the hedges. But the game that is a phenomenal draw to our area and specifically St. Simons Island, is the GA/FLClassic held in Jacksonville, FL. on November 1st. This game is rivalry personified to say the very least. This game has been named one of the top ten football rivalries by ESPN, College Football News, The Sporting News, Fox Sports and America’s Best Online.
Bulldog fans have long enjoyed the commentary of Atlanta’s legendary radio voice, Larry Munson. Larry underwent surgery recently, and the Bulldog Nation is extremely hopeful that he will be the familiar voice announcing for the 43rd Season. Mr. Munson coined the phrase for the GA/FL weekend for St. Simons as “the world’s largest cocktail party” which is certainly indicative of a lot of fans and fun going on for the build-up to this very special game.
We are handling rentals and property management now and are already getting calls from individuals getting their plans set for that timeframe. Give us a call if you’d like to plan your trip to the Golden Isles of GA.

• Aug. 18, 2008 - An Island Sprung up from the Ocean is a Bird Refuge
This lovely photo shows pelicans on the pilings and in the distance on the right you'll see the Sidney Lanier Bridge (a cable stayed bridge) which spans the South Brunswick River in Brunswick, GA. The current bridge was built to replace the original lift bridge which was struck by ships two times. Currently it is the longest spnning bridge in GA and named for poet, Sidney Lanier.
An Island Sprung up from the Ocean is a Bird Refuge
There is a small patch of land off Jekyll Island in Southeast GA which has unofficially been named “Bird Island.” This was created less than 1 year ago from dredging in the channel of the Brunswick River to deepen the waterway and that silt being dumped off formed this so-called island. To the surprise of the Non-game Conversation Section of the DNR, this little patch of beach has become a refuge for the white pelican that typically visits the Great Lakes area and not Georgian shores. In addition to the white pelican, two other protected bird species began calling this area home. The least tern, black skimmers and gull-billed tern are nesting on the uninterrupted beach sand. These three species have been hard pressed in their normal roosting habits with development running them from their homes. This isolated island has provided them a protected area for their feeding and the ritual mating dance. Conservationists hope that in coming years this island will help the birds increase in population. The area is closed to the public; however, bird enthusiasts may get close to the shore by boat and observe from afar. Bird watchers have long found our area to be an abundant source for different species, but this is beyond any expectations.
How thrilling to learn of an instance of man’s actions having such a positive impact on nature! |

• Aug. 13, 2008 - Shrimp and Grits, A Southern Classic
The Jekyll Island Authority and the Wild GA Shrimp Assn. will be bringing the Shrimp and Grits: The Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival from September 19th-21st. This annual event is absolutely committed to upholding our fresh, wild GA shrimp versus “that imported variety from God only knows where” as well as their combination with a Southern staple---grits. Certainly other delicious seafood and shrimp dishes will also be available from several local restaurants, so bring your taste buds and come to Jekyll Island in Southeast GA for a truly entertaining experience. In addition to culinary delights, there will be wonderful music, a Family Fun Zone, vendors with arts and crafts, antiques and collectables. You will have the opportunity to take a tour of a “real” shrimp boat or to take a shrimp excursion over the weekend.
The setting for the event is in the quaint and charming historic district under moss draped oak trees. For more information on this event you can 877-4-JEKYLL or go to:
Or better yet, give me a call or an email for more details or events in this wonderful area. September and October are prime months to plan a visit to the Golden Isles as the average temperature for September is 77.9º and 69.6º for October. With the pleasant temperatures and our typical glorious weather, I can almost guarantee you’ll enjoy your stay. Give me a call! |

• Aug. 8, 2008 - Glynn County, GA Real Estate Statistics
I want to provide some information to show in the residential real estate category (that includes single family homes, duplexes and condos) the amount of inventory and the sales for year 2008. This information was obtained from our local Multiple Listing Service, so of course doesn’t include properties which are not in our MLS system.
In Mainland Brunswick and Jekyll Island, we currently have 1028 listings on the market as of 8/6/08. On St. Simons Island, we have 834 listings on the market for sale. Since the beginning of the year, 294 listings were reported sold in Mainland Brunswick and Jekyll and 177 on St. Simons Island.
Then there is the lot and land category . . .
To date, in the Brunswick/Jekyll Island areas, we have 508 properties for sale. On St. Simons, there are currently 308 properties being marketed on our MLS. The sold figures for lots since the 1st of the year in our MLS system are for the Mainland only 42 and on St. Simons Island only 11. These figures hurt a little to commit to paper and ink; however, they are what they are. Wow! With numbers like this, seller’s need for a good real estate agent is more apparent than ever!
With that said this is a great time for buyers to take advantage of generous inventory to choose from and decreased pricing from a year ago for some very desirable properties. If you’d like to discuss real estate in our Glynn County area, I’d welcome the chance to do so. Give me a call or email me and let’s look into finding you a Golden Isles destination. |

• Aug. 1, 2008 - Landmark Housing Bill could start an Upswing!
The housing legislation known as the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 was signed into law by President Bush and contains several elements which should get home buyers back into the market, stop the decline in home prices and encourage consumer confidence.
In addition to changes in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loan limits, the government will at least temporarily expand the line of credit to these agencies to permit the US Treasury to purchase equity in the companies through 2009.
Another terrific feature in the housing bill is a temporary $7,500 first-time home buyer tax credit for the purchase of any home. This credit can be used for homes purchased between April 9, 2008 and July 1, 2009. This tax credit should prove an important financial incentive for home buyers and help to generate housing demand.
If you would like to read more, the National Association of Builders has launched a new website with more information on this excellent opportunity for 1st time home buyers:
If you or a family member or friend would qualify for this temporary tax credit, this is a great time to buy and benefit from this credit. |
