Go Dawgs
!
We have all made foolish choices and done things we are
not proud of somewhere along the way.
But, the shame of Michael Vick's decision to participate in dog
fighting eludes comprehension. A young
man so gifted an athlete, with a multi-million dollar contract with
the Atlanta Falcons to throw it all away is simply & literally
a crime. If you are reading this post
& have no acquaintances in the State of Georgia, please know
that we are not a barbaric state and don't condone animal brutality
in any way, shape or form. We as
Georgians apologize for this terrible affront to common
decency.
On the other hand, we are a state that loves the
game of football and are still very proud of the Atlanta Falcons,
the GA Tech Yellow Jackets and our much beloved Bulldogs
(better known as the Dawgs). The highly
anticipated annual confrontation between the GA Bulldogs & the
FL Gators is coming up on 10/27/07 at the Jacksonville
Stadium. All true Dawg fans anxiously
await the gift of hearing Larry Munson yet another
year. Larry Munson has been the
announcer for the Dawgs for over 40 years and definitely has a
wonderful vernacular we have come to expect and look forward
to. This will be his last season at the
helm & he will only be announcing home games. Kudos to Mr. Munson for 40+ years of adding
pleasure to the game. Whether or not you follow football, Glynn
County is a fun place to be that weekend in October.
If
you have not previously visited out area, there is no finer time of
year than October to come to Southeast GA. If I can be of assistance or answer any questions
on your planning a visit for that weekend or any other, please
contact me. |

• Aug. 25, 2007 - Florida Oranges, Grapefruits & Live Gators!

I am a resident of Glynn County but have been coming here even back in the dark ages with my parents & siblings as a visitor. I remember when the state highways were the mode of transportation rather than the quicker moving interstate highways. When we came south to Florida or to vacation on Jekyll Island, Highway 17 was an extremely vital roadway. I don’t know exactly the year when I-95 came through Southeast GA, but I think it was in the early 70’s. As a child, I remember traveling Hwy. 17 and the many thriving hotels, restaurants and tourist stands selling oranges & grapefruits and other tourist memorabilia as you passed through each town. Does anyone else remember the signs advertising viewing live alligators in tanks? After the Interstate came through so many of the businesses either closed up or relocated closer to the interstate exits.
But interestingly enough, the stretch of Highway 17 going through Brunswick is experiencing a resurgence of activity. Abandoned buildings and outdated, rundown properties are being bought, razed and new construction is widespread. As in all things, commerce seems to run in cycles, and Brunswick as a whole, and certainly this stretch of highway, is seeing a revival.
I’m very excited about what is happening in my little part of the world and if I can answer any questions or assist you in any way, please contact me. I’m living the Beachcomber Lifestyle and I’m loving it!
P.S. – An interesting tidbit on the US interstate highway system is that it was initiated by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 and lobbied for by President Eisenhower. Eisenhower was so impressed with the German autobahn network when he served as a young soldier that he championed our country improving our highway transportation system. • Aug. 22, 2007 - Shrimp & Grits - Eat up Sailor!
Jekyll Island’s Shrimp & Grits Festival
September 14 – 16, 2007
What in the world is more authentic southern cooking than Shrimp & Grits? The only food that might rival that selection may be collard greens & ham hocks! I don’t want to be negligent in not notifying you of the upcoming Shrimp & Grits Festival to be held in mid-September. If sampling the cook-off entries for the very best shrimp & grits entry is not enough to draw you, throw in music, a golf tournament, shrimp boat tours and vendors with arts, crafts & antiques set up under the unparalleled moss draped oaks in the Island’s historic district. Celebrity Chefs will be giving shows, and one of them is none other than Paul Deen’s baby brother, Uncle Bubba, who is the owner of Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House in Savannah. The first time I ever-viewed shrimp & grits being served up in a champagne glass was on one of Paula Deen’s Food TV shows. Now it has become the trendy item to offer at cocktail parties everywhere. Somehow, probably by mistake, I was included in a holiday party last season at The Cloister Hotel and even they had shrimp & grits on their buffet table! Need I point out, all the shrimp offered will be Wild Georgia Shrimp & not some farm raised product from who only knows where!
If you want to view more information on the event & check out the specials hotels are offering, see: www.jekyllisland.com/shrimpandgrits/
I sincerely hope you will give me a call if you have any questions on this event or if I may be of service. |

• Aug. 20, 2007 - Price, Price, Price!!!
The caption Location, Location, Location, should be changed to Price, Price, Price!
I maintain as my mantra that to sell a home in a reasonable amount of time, you must price it comparably to others in the area. Real estate agents that promise Sellers a prompt sale of an overpriced property do those clients a dreadful disservice as well as muddy the waters for others with a more realistic view. I’ve heard statements like “I know it’s seriously overpriced, but it is a listing & maybe I’ll get calls . . .” However, another consideration is if your track record for selling your listings is poor that’s not very good for soliciting other business, is it? What is the chance of that disappointed seller recommending you to market their friend’s home? Certainly a reputation for overpricing listings puts a big dent in your credibility with others in the real estate community, as well.
The client hires us to do a job and speak from experience & knowledge and that sometimes means relaying what they may not wish to hear. I realize the customer is always right, however; as in all things, honesty is the best policy. |

• Aug. 16, 2007 - Do you ever feel like a Dinosaur?
|
I feel older than Dirt!
I have been reading in our local newspaper articles on new methods in which students are being taught in our school system. Reference has been made to the “smart board” which has taken the place of the old chalkboard my age group was familiar with. These electronic boards sound much like a video game to me with the children using some gizmo at their desks to register their answers electronically! Another recent article spoke of the decline in penmanship of our youth, as they seldom write anything but instead type on their keyboards or text message each other. The task of writing out a paper has become an ordeal that the students of today choose to reject. I, too, only handwrite short notes today and favor a computer-generated letter if the content is of any length. Isn’t it exciting to speculate on what technological advances we will witness in the next decade?
I do admit that the modern practice of companies using an automated telephone system is one that often vexes me. The day of talking to a live person initially wasn’t at all bad! In our competitive business, I believe real estate professionals that remember the art of providing personal service are the ones that get those all-important repeat customers and their referrals. Technology is wonderful when it works hand-in-hand with individual service.
P. S. - Never be afraid to try something new. Remember: Amateurs...built the ark. Professionals...built the Titanic
