The main purpose of Lake Lanier is for flood control downstream on the Chattahoochee River. Buford Dam also provides hydroelectricity and is one of the primary sources of drinking water for Metro Atlanta. Because of recent droughts, Florida, Georgia and Alabama have all been fighting for use of the water. Additionally, other laws such as the Endangered Species Act require that water held in Lake Lanier be available for threatened or endangered species that live in the Chattahoochee River and Apalachicola Bay. Because of the recent droughts and demand for it’s fresh water, water levels on Lake Lanier have been lower than normal since early 2006. However, due to the return to more average rainfall, aggressive water conservation by area residents, and the Corps of Engineers decision to reduce water releases, water levels on Lake Lanier have begun to rise.
