Before the railroad came through in 1882, Ball Ground was almost purely agricultural, consisting of two country stores and a few dwellings. After the railroad, the town grew as a result of the marble industry. According to the 2005 census data, Cherokee county ranked the fifth fastest growing counties in Georgia.
