Good News... Tear My Heart Out |

Sitting in the sauna… reading. Tony walks in carrying his oxygen tank that is his constant companion. It was a particularly interesting part of my book so I ignored Tony.
Then he said, “I went to the doctor and got some good news. I’m down to two hundred and eighteen pounds. I have been off my diabetes medicine for over a week with no sign of the disease. The doctor said that if I keep my weight down and the diabetes does not recur he is going to put me on the list for a heart transplant.”
Neither, he or the doctor thought his health would return to a level that would qualify him for a transplant. He described the mixture of feelings.
As I listened I had my own mixture of feelings; amazement, pleasure at his good news, awe, compassion.
He left the sauna. I went back to my book. As I pause at the end of the day to reflect I am in awe again. I can’t put it into words. There is just something about the casual context of that conversation and its profound nature that amazes me.
When I see him tomorrow I am going to thank him for sharing that with me.
