Mar. 8, 2009 - How Does Cutting Taxes for 98% of Americans Sound Like an Increase? When the Richest 2% Control the Media…
I saw this article and I personally think it’s relevant to what is going on these days. Regardless of what side of the fence you sit on politically it’s pretty hard to deny the facts surrounding these tax cuts and pretty hard to deny the facts surrounding whose taxes will actually be raised. The fact is that 98% of Americans will get a tax cut and for once we the little guys win while the richest 2% of Americans that is people who make over $200,000 per year or $250,000 for families will have an increase in taxes. Before you start with that’s unfair or that’s socialism calm down and actually look at the numbers. It’s like a 3% raise in taxes and as this article points out “for someone with $350,000 in income, this will amount to about $1,500 a year in increased taxes.”
They also point out that it’s not really even a raise since this was a planned expiration.
Maybe I am wrong but I think $1500 to someone making that kind of cash is probably insignificant but apparently not because the powers that be are waging all out war over this and using everything at their disposal to try to turn this around on ordinary Americans.
If you read the article I have linked to you can clearly see what I mean. News story after news story they are all sounding the same trumpet. It’s no coincidence that this fits in with other popular agenda such as trying to equate this to socialism which it’s not and for the record Obama is no socialist. Oh but you are probably thinking that isn’t so but I have one thing to point out here since when are taxes being raised or lowered socialism? If we put the burden on other demographics in this country for instance if we kept our older tax laws and the brunt of taxes were paid for by a different group of Americans what do we call that? I guess I would call that business as usual but when the shoe is on the other foot and we raise the taxes for the top 2% in this country suddenly we are a socialist nation? Seriously think for a second if the latter is socialism then what the heck do you call the first thing?
No matter what those in power are saying and they are all beating the same drum here, no matter what it’s simply what it is, a tax cut. You can try to paint this picture however you want but at the end of the day those who need this money the most will greatly benefit under this and those who $1500 is pocket change will just have to suck it up. And while the large corporations and richest few people in this country control the mass media to defend themselves and start a culture war then I think it’s only right that the little guy has a voice as well.
