Feb. 28, 2009 - How to Social Network Your Website--Viral Websites? Oh Yeah!
There is a lot of talk about SEO and how that can drive traffic to your website. There is also a lot of talk about blogging and social networking such as using Digg for your articles all in the hopes that somehow something that you write will go viral. But what about making your website go viral?
Ok well that’s probably not going to happen. I mean really I don’t think the kids are going to find my Eau Claire real estate website that exciting and adults aren’t probably going to spread the link love or even forward your site to thousands of people. But they might share your site with a few people. Those people might like your site and share it with their friends. Well it might not be the Dengue fever of viral diseases but we can still make your website a slowly spreading disease. Isn’t that a lovely picture?
Well if you aren’t sick to your stomach and you still want your website to be spread around you need to make the tools available to your visitors. Now this is a bit easier for me to do than probably most people because I have a Joomla! website and millions of great programmers around the world building incredible modules. So for me I just find something I like and press a few buttons and voila, I have cool stuff. But you can do it too. First let’s see what I am talking about.

But over on the right you can see I added some stuff to not only let people share it on their social networks but also so they can tell a friend. I think these are two very different things and it’s important to address them. It makes it so much easier to basically speed up the process of word of mouth and it adds an interesting, more modern way of basically doing the same thing. Sure they could just send a link to your website in an email but everyone likes using FaceBook so why not make it easier?
So how can you dress up your site?
Widgets. Badges. One or the other. Both? A lot of them? A few of them? Whatever you think is appropriate. Here is an example link http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php
It’s up to you to decide how you want to do this. I can’t design your site for you but I can hopefully show you some really cool ways to get your site noticed and shared. Oh and in case you wonder how you add these to your site it’s just a simple code that you embed but if web design isn’t your forte then talk to your site designer and see what they can do. Show them some examples if they aren’t sure what you mean.
My point with this is that everyone talks about blogging and trying to make that easier to be shared but seldom does anyone talk about how to share your website. So make your website 2.0 compatible and make it stand out.

Feb. 28, 2009 - Want More Visitors to Your Site? Uggh! Why don’t you Want Re-Visitors? Part 2
Check out the first part in this series here. All the talk is about SEO these days that is if you have a website and you want more visitors. But the thing I never see anyone talking about these days is getting Re-Visitors. Whaaat? Think about this for a minute, SEO is all about driving traffic to your site. That’s important I won’t lie. Without traffic your site isn’t really doing much. So you work on SEO and you bust your buns trying everything under the sun to get people there. Then the SEO gurus preach content, content, content and more content. That’s true. Without good content people go buh-bye and click off your site. If you use Google Analytics you can track how fast people say bye to your site by checking your bounce rate and yes you should be tracking this because it’s important. But and I stress the but, the thing I never see is advocating people to simply come back. Simple enough but why is no one ever saying this anymore?
So like I was saying above you work so hard driving that traffic to your site. You work so hard making sure you rank well in the SERPs but every aspect of this type of SEO depends on being found in the Search Engines. So it’s a crap shoot each time your potential visitor uses Google and tries to find your site. Unless your site ranks #1 for every single key word or phrase (which it doesn’t) then you are losing out on visitors, especially the ones who have already visited your site! That’s what I am trying to get across here. You already did the work but you aren’t even asking them to come back. Why is your site missing out on this niche?
So what can we do about it?
Plenty and that’s what this series is about.
Like I said in part 1, you need a favicon but just having a favicon isn’t going to make people actually save this site to favorites and that’s why I said we need a call to action. So let’s do it! (Oh by the way do you like my favicon?)
First go to my Eau Claire Real Estate site if you haven’t seen what I am talking about and you should see what I mean instantly. Then tell me if what you saw is too annoying. I wasn’t sure if I was going too over the top and I would actually like some input. I know everyone hates popups but this only lasts 3 seconds and it moves so it’s not really in your face if you want to move around and if you click on it this will save it to favorites. It does not work in Firefox and I haven’t found lines of code that will make it work in both. So if anyone knows please let me know. I figure if someone is using FF they probably would know how to do this anyways and hopefully the message gets across regardless.
…Anyways my point is that I am asking people to save this site to favorites. I am asking them to come back. In fact I think I might ask them on every page of my site to come back. I want re-visitors. I want people to come back. I don’t want to have to depend on my extensive SEO work to make my site found every single time. Notice also that I have applied on the top right a simple button that has the same effect. I am asking over and over on purpose. I want people to keep stumbling across the idea and hopefully come back.

Feb. 28, 2009 - Want More Visitors to Your Site? Uggh! Why don’t you Want Re-Visitors?
With all the SEO talk lately I rarely see a post that gets back to the basics of web design and the old but true ways of making your site “sticky.” Almost all the talk is of how to get more traffic and many articles talk about content and how important content is to keeping your visitors on your site, they rarely focus on how to get them to come back. I mean if you are doing all that work to get them there in the first place to me it seems illogical not to mention ways to get them to come back. So I thought I would do something about it.
First part in this series: the favicon.
I am willing to bet you don’t have one. I hardly see any custom favicons except the stock ones that come with Internet Exploder or Firefox. Why do I bother with such a little thing? Well for starters name one professional website that doesn’t have its own custom favicon. Stumped huh? But I bet you never even think about this little thing and yet all the big sites have them. You want a professional site right? Then why doesn’t your “professional” site have one of these?
I won’t get into how to make them because it’s pretty easy and here are some links to do it.

So if that didn’t explain it then just click on that Google search. Also it’s really easy you just need to make an image file that is 16x16 and then draw your little logo. I made mine in about 30 minutes and you can see what it looks like by going to my Eau Claire Real Estate website here.
So now you have a favicon but you need a call to action! Huh?

Feb. 27, 2009 - The Future of the web… More of the Same?
This is one of those pieces that I think is more than just a good read. I am always concerned about new technologies and rightly so. They are shaping the way we do business and we are changing the way we communicate. Technology is changing us or are we changing technology? Is it we that adapts or are we adapting to technology?
But I wonder really, as do many people, what the future holds for us especially as it relates to the internet. Certainly this is one of the most important, if not the most important technologies of the 20th and 21st centuries. It may even go down as the single greatest human accomplishment. I guess that’s hard to even say or swallow but maybe. But then it’s hard to say what will happen. Certainly no one could have guessed the impact that the internet would have on our society, so it’s hard to say that this is it or that something new won’t come a long, but it is certainly undeniable that the internet is here to stay.

Feb. 27, 2009 - A Reason to use Yahoo or a Reason to be on Facebook?
Yahoo recently did something pretty cool. That might sound strange to say because for the most part you can poke Yahoo with a stick when you compare it to Google. But Google and Facebook don’t get a long for the most part so this makes sense. What is it? Yahoo added Facebook to their search results and now your face shows up if you use Facebook that is and of course they are looking for you or for some reason your profile just shows up in the search. That seems like a lot of ifs but you can see the results below.

Feb. 20, 2009 - Oh no not Another Social Network!? Oh Yes! But This one is Much More
Sick to death of social networking? Or sick to death of hearing about all the new ones? Well as much as the idea of social networking has been poked, prodded and dragged around you would hardly think anyone could do something new. But then you would be wrong because Virb has done something rather unique or perhaps you call it a new twist on the proverbial champagne bottle. (You know the cheap kind with the metal twist off!)
Well Virb is no cheap champagne and what it does it does well. This isn’t just a social network per se it’s more of an enhancement to whatever else you are doing. Huh? It works to incorporate all your work from all over the web into a nice, easy to look at interface and it does a spectacular job. It’s easy to work with and if you are a blogger or whatever it is you do Virb works to make your work really shine.

Feb. 20, 2009 - Twitter is Changing to Better Incorporate Real Time Searches
There is an article over at Tech Crunch saying Twitter is basically trying to make it easier to sift through the muck. App after app has tried to do this and if you have used Twitter you probably understand how hard it is to sort out all the Tweeting. This will also lend more to the usability factor. For instance if you are a Real Estate Tweeter it should let the end user be able to find you easier. Win win for everyone? I think so. It’s definitely a good move in the right direction to make Twitter an even better service.

Feb. 20, 2009 - Looking for That Presentation Wow Factor? Check This out!
I came across this article the other day and at first wasn’t quite able to figure out a way that I could use this. Basically this service is like a Power Point on steroids and lets you insert video into a presentation. Not only does it allow you to narrate the slide it incorporates YouTube and Vimeo and lets you directly access the libraries of both.
I think the wow factor possibilities here are endless and I definitely could use this service.
Oh but how you wonder?
Well what about an enhanced virtual tour? I really think this might work well. You could pop a few pictures in the front end of the presentation and then put the video tour at the end. It would definitely be a very enhanced virtual tour since you could incorporate so many mediums. What about putting the data sheet for the listing at the end? What about tossing in some neighborhood statistics?
You can easily put the link to the presentation anywhere and it also includes embed code. Wow. Wow.

Feb. 20, 2009 - Great Way to “Dress up” Your Website or Blog
I don’t know about you but I hate messing around with documents that are linked to in websites or blogs. IT always seems like such a pain and that’s why about a month ago I wrote a post about a service called Issuu that came out which made a great way to embed documents wherever you want. It looks great and functions well. Now another service called DocStoc has been released which works along similar lines. Basically both services work and look great. It’s just a matter of taste which one you think looks better. I would definitely recommend this if not for the wow factor but for the functionality as well.
