Part-time Student and Medicare Rx Assistance Introduced
Dear Michael,
In New Jersey, many college students are adults balancing their studies with a full-time job or family obligations. We should support individuals who are working to gain a more secure future for themselves and for their families.

Last week I introduced the Part-time Student Assistance Act. This legislation would create a pilot program to develop comprehensive approaches for addressing the needs of part-time students, including course programs, tuition assistance, and child care. It would allow Pell Grants to be offered year-round (currently they are only offered during fall and spring semesters). It would also allow students to earn a greater amount of money without having it count against their student aid, and it would expand child care options for students who are also parents.

Making Prescriptions More Affordable
One of the many problems with the Medicare prescription drug benefit is that it leaves a giant gap in coverage for seniors. After a senior’s expenses have reached $2,400 in a year, the bottom drops out of their federal assistance. During this “donut hole” in coverage – which would be described more accurately as a cliff – seniors are forced to pay for medically necessary prescription drugs out of their own pocket or find other organizations to do so. In 2006, four million Americans had to pay out of their own pocket for medically necessary prescription drugs. There should not be a “donut hole” that leaves seniors in a lurch after they have exhausted their federal benefits.

Last week, I introduced the Helping to Fill the Medicare Rx Gap Act, legislation that will ensure that more senior citizens receive federal assistance in paying for prescription drug costs under Medicare. The Helping to Fill the Medicare Rx Gap Act will allow seniors to be credited with prescription drug costs incurred by a wider variety of medical providers, organizations, and patient assistance programs. This will allow a beneficiary to access catastrophic federal assistance earlier, thereby reducing their personal expenses.

Sincerely,
RUSH HOLT
