“It’s a Urban Dog’s Life” Written by Kevin “The Food Dude” Roberts!
Posted at 3:19 PM on Oct. 15, 2009
92101 Urban Living is fortunate to present a guest blog by the East Village’s own Food Dude…Kevin Roberts. A similar piece will be featured in the next month issue of The Downtown San Diego News. In addition to being a Downtown San Diego Loft owner in the M2i Complex; The Food Dude is executive chef of the successful East Village Tavern and Bowl, author of several cookbooks, and an accomplished TV and Radio Chef Personality seen on The Food Network, and Today Show.
“It’s a Urban Dog’s Life”
Written by Kevin “The Food Dude” Roberts
I bought a puppy! Not just any puppy. I did my research, months upon months of looking and pondering and thinking, What would be the best dog suited to my urban lifestyle? I would walk down the street doing re-con type missions and seeing what other dogs people had. One guy had a great dane, a horse basically, and all I kept visualizing is coming home to my 1 bedroom apartment and seeing the utter destruction afflicted by that enormous dog. I saw a girl with a Chihuahua. Not sure why it yaps and shakes all the time, but probably not the manliest dog for me. I settled on a French Bulldog.
From what I’ve read, they are used to small apartments being from France and all, low maintenance and basically lazy. Now that’s my type of dog. I can go to work, travel and still have a life. But what they didn’t tell me was the constant crying, shitting and peeing I am now enduring on a constant basis. I call it the trifecta of doom. Then my breeder dropped a bomb-shell on my nomadic world. Stinky, my dogs new name, cant leave the apartment for another 3 weeks until she’s had her last Parvo shots. 3 weeks!?! Holy Mackeral, 3 weeks of crying, shitting and peeing. I need a drink.
I got to thinking, are there bars and restaurants or cool shops in Downtown San Diego that are Stinky friendly? A place I can go just hang out and spend quality time with my pet without sitting on the couch all day? Here’s what I found:
East Village Tavern & Bowl
930 Market Street & 9th, East Village District
100 foot long patio, come enjoy your favorite drink or game with your pet
The Fleetwood
639 J Street & 7th, Gaslamp District
Enjoy their wrap around patio on the corner with your pet
Pannikin
675 G Street & 7th, Gaslamp District
Enjoy your exotic coffee or tea with your pet
Café 222
222 Island Ave & 2nd, Marina District
Enjoy the best breakfast tamales with your pet
You can go to: www.DogFriendly.com for an extensive list of hotels, parks, beaches, bars and restaurants.

Winter Shelter in the East Village District in Downtown San Diego 2010 Rejected!
Posted at 12:46 PM on Sep. 16, 2009

The City Council of San Diego proposed to have a vacant lot in the East Village District in Downtown San Diego as the spot for setting up a temporary winter homeless shelter. Downtown San Diego Condo and Loft homeowners, residents and business owners stood up and expressed opposition.
The proposal was rejected on September 15th, 2009 after a 5-2 vote. The San Diego City Council has encouraged San Diego City staff to give alternative places that might be more suitable and located outside Downtown San Diego by early next month.
The winter shelter was supposed to be located around Island Avenue, J Street and 15th Street. Please visit “East Village” to see a map of the area.
The East Village District has hosted the winter shelter the last two years and Councilman Kevin Faulconer, who represents Downtown said, “It’s unfair to keep burdening Downtown year after year with the shelter, especially when homelessness is a regional issue. There are other parts of the City that do need to help. This is a Citywide issue.”
To read the more about the “2010 Homeless Emergency Winter Shelter Program” please read the article “Council rejects shelter location” in the Union Tribune or please visit the City of San Diego.

The Star of India in Downtown San Diego is Getting a Face Lift!!
Posted at 12:33 PM on Aug. 20, 2009

Early Tuesday morning the Star of India took sail and moved from its location at the Embarcadero in the Columbia District to a South Bay dry dock in National City for its yearly inspection and hull repairs.
The Maritime Museum is hoping to have the ship back by September 4th after blasting its iron hull with sand and water to prepare it for a coating that is expected to prevent it from rusting and to keep the Star of India from having to be painted every 10 years. The repairs will cost about $225,000 and the Maritime Museum is paying for it but they are hoping for sponsors to help with the cost. The museum says the work is expected to save about $4,000 per year.
The Star of India is the oldest operational tallest ship in the word and The Maritime Museum says this dry dock is necessary to keep it that way. To see the video of moving the ship please click here.

The San Diego Coronado Bridge is Celebrating 40 Years of Transportation
Posted at 12:23 PM on Aug. 5, 2009
Downtown San Diego Condo home owners and Downtown San Diego Loft home owners and San Diego residents celebrated the San Diego Coronado Bridge’s big 40 years of service Sunday August 2nd. The City of Coronado is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and when the San Diego Coronado Bridge opened in 1969, the bridge became and instant landmark.
The bridge is ascending at a 4.67 percent grade from Coronado before curving 90 degrees towards San Diego. The Navy’s tallest ships are allowed to sail under it because the curve makes the span long enough so it can rise to a height of 200 feet.
The former Hotel Del Coronado owner John Alessio and then owner M. Larry Lawrence told Gov. Edmund G. “Pat” Brown that they thought a bridge plan would gain traction. Since the 1920’s, Coronado officials had looked at proposal to make the City of Coronado more accessible and in 1965 the state officials approved the bridge plan. A state toll revenue bond was decided to become funding for the bridge.
When the bridge opened “It completely changed things” former Mayor Tom Smisek said. “We had car dealerships, a department store. We had hardware stores and a movie theater. You really didn’t leave very often. You didn’t have to.” The bridge changed the City of Coronado from being an un modern no traffic small town into a modern traffic filled City that attracted millions of tourists, developers and new homeowners.
The bridge allowed tourists and San Diego residents to reach Coronado’s wide, sandy beaches with an easy drive over the bridge. People used to cross the San Diego Bay by ferry boat or drove up the Silver Strand by Imperial Beach but that took way longer. The bridge brought in large shopping centers across the Bay that attracted residents and some Coronado businesses had to close. They were replaced by more tourist attracted shops and restaurants.

Coronado’s population when the bridge opened in 1965 was 19,550 and it has not really changed much compared with 22,845 today. More businesses, smaller homes demolished into two or more units in the same lot, the Coronado Cays and the 10 Coronado Shores Condo towers, was developed by the opening of the bridge.
40 years ago the ferry boats that used to transport passengers and cars stopped when the bridge opened because the State did not want any competition when the bridge tolls were paying for the construction of the bridge.
A new mix of commercial and residential projects took place near First Street and Orange Avenue, where the former ferry landing was located. The City restricted the number of large retail outlets and fast food chains long ago and on the other side of town small stores and landscaped streets of historic million dollar homes.
Phil Needham used to work and drive the ferry boats and he says “It was a village, Today it is a City”.
The City has been given an enviable budget reserve, services and amenities since the property values have increased. In June, single family homes had a median sales price of $865,000.
Some residents of the City of Coronado admires and supports the 2.1 mile bridge and its views but some thinks that state Highway 75, that crosses the bridge and heads across town through a residential neighborhood, had brought more noise to a once quite Third and Fourth Streets.
“It cut the city in half,” said Wadleigh, who works at Kippy’s clothing store on Orange Avenue. “It was like having two Coronados.”
Every weekday 85,000 cars travels over the bridge but it was only designed to accommodate 30,000 daily trips. Afraid of increasing traffic in 1986 when the $47.6 million bridge was paid off, some people did not want to get rid of the $1 toll. After the tolls were taken away in 2002 traffic increased with 20%.
Most traffic comes from North Island Naval Air Station, Coronado Officials say about two thirds, nearly 57,000 daily trips. The Navy, that employs 25,000 personnel, reservists and civilian home workers with three ships in port, gives us the number 40,016.
To ease traffic the City officials are studying a tunnel to transport cars from the end of the bridge in Coronado under the City to the Navy Base. This plan is the most expensive option, estimated at a half billion dollars, but it might be the only way.
The City is seeking funding ideas, one is to once again have a toll. Detractors say the the tunnel would be way too expensive and also that the Navy doesn’t support it. The Navy has not taken an official position in this matter. Question is, would a tunnel end Coronado’s traffic problems?
