About Me

Here is my story. I am a real estate professional with a background in journalism, corporate communications, public relations, marketing, online communities, and a variety of other pursuits and projects.

As most, it took some time to find my spot on the bus. After taking a couple of years off following high school, I spent the best six years of my life in community college. I thought that accounting might be my calling; it didn’t take long to decide on an alternative. There was a shortage of erasers during the first month.

A friend of mine suggested that my gift of gab might make for a career in journalism. It was a pretty fit and I started out at Journalism 101 with an old school teacher named Don Roberge – a classic strong-jawed New Englander who knew the business like few others.

After a few years at Long Beach City College, I transferred over to Cerritos Collage, one of the premier community colleges for journalism in the state. My new mentor was one C.T. Nelson, another guy who knew his stuff. I had an excellent stint at Cerritos, earning numerous awards and serving on the Journalism Association of Community Colleges as the VP.

Eventually, it was time to move on. My first professional gig was as a journalist covering high school football games for a weekly newspaper – the South Gate Press. I love sports and still do. I worked my way up to editor of the weekly publication, then to a position as manager of the entire chain.

During those early days, I covered the Lakers and the Dodgers in the glory days with access to managers, players and announcers. During the Lakers’ “Show Time” seasons, I had press access to the Lakers locker room and Pat Reilly, Magic, Kareem, Worthy and the rest. Value made up --  in terms of love of the game -- because salary was not a motivation.

As a die-hard Dodger fan, the time spent covering Big Blue was heaven on earth. Being there during the times of Garvey, Lopes, Cey and Russell was incredible. The sounds resonating out of the Tommy’s mouth in his office are not suitable for prime time.

After my entry into the newspaper business, I worked my way up to sports editor and then news editor of both weekly and daily publications. In 1986, my team and I were awarded the prestigious national Reporter of the Year award from Scripps-Howard newspapers for our coverage of the Memorial Day plane crash in Cerritos.

My mother lived only a couple of miles from the site. My heart stuck in my throat as I called her, but she was fine. My instinct kicked in and I dropped my kids off at mom's house and went to the site. When I arrived and accessed the crash sceen, it was unbelievable… leveled  homes, scattered jet parts including an engine the crashed through a concrete wall and into the street. Bodies, well, body parts were scattered everywhere.

My team and I jumped into action, providing a new aspect to the story, providing information to victims on how to access help, resources and try to cope with the disaster. Interviews  families that lost everything, including their lved ones.

Six months later, we won the Scripps Howard Reporter of the Year award for non-daily publications.

It wasn’t long after that I was named managing editor for a chain of weeklies. After that, I moved to a position as the weekend news editor and real estate editor for the Daily Pilot in Costa Mesa, CA.

In 1990, I was hired to head up the publications team at Century 21 Real Estate Corp. When the corporation was purchased by HFS (then Cendant and now Realogy) in 1995, I signed on as a consultant and created my own company – One-Stop Desktop.

After several years on my own, I accepted the position of Director of PR and Marketing at HouseHunt, one of the original lead generation firms and one that still is a market leader to this day. After five years, the time was right to make a move.

In November of 2004, I joined InternetCrusade and it was one of the best moves I have ever made. IC is a great company with outstanding leadership and close ties to the National Association of REALTORS through the creation and delivery of the e-PRO Certification Course.

The past two years have been incredible with the launch of the all-new RealTown.com real estate portal. IC has always been the leader in online communities and today is poised to become the number one source of real estate information on the Internet.

I have the opportunity to write, market, promote, edit and create in today’s Web 2.0 environment.

See you online. And, remember, Content is King.
