When people call Columbus a cowtown do they mean it in a nice way?

"Hmm...what to say about Columbus? It's flat. The cost of living is reasonable. It isn't as backward as it used to be. It's the worlds largest cow town and a good place to live but a lousy place to visit. I lived in Columbus for thirty years. What I miss the most about Columbus are my friends and family who still live there."

Is it "cow town" or "cowtown"? Is Columbus called a cowtown because there are cows in town? I am from Wisconsin originally but I have never lived in a rural area. Madison WI had cows in town too since it also had an agriculture school..... I did not pay any attention to the cows.

Columbus is a good place to live. The cows keep to their own kind.
