A+ Real Estate Newbies

Nov. 3, 2008

Newer real estate agents can find it difficult to get started on the right path during these trying economic times. My tips to new agents who want to be successful are:

·         Create a personal page on www.LinkedIn.com and www.Facebook.com . They should be professional and utilized with the mindset that anyone and everyone will and can see it. Check them and update them daily.
·         Invite your friends and family to join your pages. Create a community. Add value to their lives.
·         Always have business cards with you at ALL times. Your business card should always have your photo on it. Everyone should know who you are and what you do. No “Secret Agents” allowed.
·         Send a hand written card to everyone you know. Let them know you have joined a real estate firm and would be happy to help them answer any questions they might have. Be enthusiastic!
·         Follow up with a phone call to everyone you mail a card to. Make sure they received it and ask if they have any questions. Ask them if you can call them from time to time for help, assistance or just to chat.
·         Mail, call or personally visit everyone at least once every three weeks.
·         Create a book reading list for yourself. You should read at least one book a month if not more. Ask successful people in the industry what they would recommend reading. After you finish the book then let the person who recommended it to you know and ask them what they thought about the book.
·         Dress for success. The first 2 years I was in business I went to the office wearing a coat and tie. I also wore a name tag so everyone knew my name. I wore it everywhere even to the grocery store.
·         Always be early for everything. Everything means business and personal. It shows respect for yourself, others and the event. Agents have lost multi-million dollar listings because they were 10 minutes late and tried to give the client an excuse. The client doesn’t care what the excuse is.
·         Return all phone calls immediately. Develop the reputation as the “Go To Person”.
·         Never take a phone call when you are with a client.
·         Whatever you do, do it 110%. The little extra 10% will be noticed by the people who can make a huge difference.

These are what I would advise any real estate agent to do as part of their foundation for success. I encourage agents to immerse themselves deeply into their real estate careers. I encourage them to develop a professional mind set. I love the profession and what it has allowed me to do. You can achieve anything you want with a real estate career. I look forward to celebrating your successes and many wonderful stories “from the trenches”.

I use LinkedIn as my professional networking. I invite all of my clients to join. I also invite colleagues other than those who are in my selling area. I keep my profile looking like a top notch résumé and send it to prospective clients. Many people will search for my name on Google and Yahoo. LinkedIn helps to add more presence to the results.

I also use Facebook for my social network. It is fun and lets you see what your friends and clients are doing on a personal level. Your past clients will like it too as they can see what you are up to and feel somewhat connected to you.

I tie everything together, my websites, blogs, social and professional networks. On the signature portion of all my e-mails you will notice that I place links for people to join me. I recommend reading the books, “Buzz Marketing” and “How to Work a Room”. With a little effort you can become the Maven of you circle, The go-to person who is always called first.

Did you happen to catch Mark Burrell’s Blogging 101 class at the convention? Most excellent. He is doing a free webinar on Monday. Contact him to see if you can join. mark@burrellgroup.com. You will also need to download a class workbook.

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes for you. Please remember, I am never too busy for your referrals.
