Historic Mill Valley Home Goes Up in Flames |
A bit of sad news fell upon our community when a home in Mill Valley, with some rich history, caught on fire Saturday night. The home once belonged to naturalist Elizabeth Terwilliger as well as a few generations of families in the Marin area. Firefighters arrived at the two-alarm fire a little after 11:00 pm and by that time the home was engulfed in flames and threatening nearby homes as well. Luckily firefighters were able to keep it from spreading and no one was injured because the current resident was not in the house at the time.
The home was originally built in the early 1950's and was the first home to be built on Strawberry Point's east side. Designed by Roger Somers, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright who designed the Trident Restaurant (now the Horizons Restaurant), located in Sausalito. Although the home was a stunning achievement, it turned out to have several defects and the Terwilliger's moved out after a few years.
Unfortunately, the home was destroyed in the blaze; the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
