Comb the fine print of a 1960s advertisement for a development of "luxurious" new houses in Naperville, for example, and the closest you come is "fully insulated." And, that was an amenity worth bragging about then.

Home buyers today expect a better new house, and they get it. Gone are drafty windows, indoor pollutants and the rot and mold that were once considered natural consequences of a house's aging process. Responding is a new breed of home builders who put microscopes to every building product they consider.
