Nahoon Sports Precinct friend or foe ? |
The recently published and well attended launch of the " Nahoon Sports Precinct" muted by the Buffalo City Development Committee and appointed consultants Umhlaba consulting to be the next big thing for Nahoon , has residents abuzz with what the real story behind this proposal is.
It was obvious that an element of tension exists between the Nahoon Ratepayers and the authorities and their representative consultants. Having listened to many of the arguments and heated statements , it seems that the municipality have earned their position of mistrust from the community . Reasons for this seem to stem from numerous decisions that seem to have been made regardless of heated objections from residents , most recently on the parking site for the Surfers marathon adjacent to the former Dolphin Hotel site , now Furstenburg luxury apartments rising from the ground. I would love to see the offer that was made " allegedly a few hundred thousand rand more than the winning bid for the land " by a resident in Harewood drive. This offer was largely ignored and it is claimed that the land was sold as private treaty rather than public as claimed by the council.
With this platform placing a cloud of suspicion around the real reason for the "Sports precinct " investigation , obviously wary residents are questioning the time frame of Dec 2008 to complete the investigation into these environmentally sensitive areas. See the link to the areas proposed , Nahoon Caravan Park , Nahoon Beach and Corner , Reef ( Nahoon Point) nature reserve , East London Golf club and driving range , and the piece of ground adjacent to the Stirling high school grounds. http://www.bcda.co.za/businessopportunities.html
After a public discussion around the muted beachfront developments at the Marina Glen and surrounding sites was handled at the meeting , I have to admit some thoughts crossed my mind weather an alternative site for the weekend beachfront party goers may not be a consideration in the councils mind for some of these sites ? I am sure something will need to on offer when hotels and office blocks start taking over the beachfront sites.
So what is the deal , do we accept that the outcome of whatever the "appointed professionals " put forward for our neighbourhood is the right thing for us and the area we live in. Or do we really get involved and have a say in the actual direction. I am wondering if apathy will be the route chosen for the destination of our lovely suburb or if we can truly take this " opportunity" that the BDCA has proposed and truly improve rather than develop our nieghbourhood? Please post your comments and lets get involved in making sure your property investments are secure in the future in Nahoon and Nahoon Mouth.
