2008 Is Going To Be An Amazing Year!
For some, it is going to be amazingly hard and, for others, amazingly wonderful. Which place do you want to be in? What do you believe about the coming year? My husband, Bub, the resident devil's advocate, and I were having a discussion a couple of days ago. As a recovering control freak, I love doing planning each year. There is something wonderful about the clean slate that a new year brings that excites me. The old saying about it being the first day of the rest of my life seems so.
I'd asked Bub what his goals were for 2008 and he said,"It's going to be a hard year. I just want to survive." The word "hard" really hit me. I asked him why and he gave me all the same reasons the media has been harping on: the cost of gas, the foreclosures and lending problems, the war. Now, I am an eternal optimist and perhaps, sometimes, even unwilling to be realistic, but what is most relevant for me, was WE ARE GOING TO BE JUST FINE in 2008...in spite of those things. He retired last year and is not dependent on having any work and has a modest income from his Social Security that he can survive on. We aren't touch the rest of the retirement funds yet!
While I am not happy about paying more for gas, we will do it. Maybe the auto companies will finally be forced to make more fuel efficient cars! And maybe we'll combine unnecessary trips and even become more efficient with our time! The real estate market in Tucson has not suffered much decline and so, personally, this won't affect us much financially. Our home is free and clear and I have a break even on my rental property. I could say we've been lucky, but it really is a function of having planned for financial independence. My coaching business is stronger than ever because the smart agents are working on reinventing themselves and their businesses and I am really good at helping people do that!
And, the war.....Ah, I do yearn to be able to do something about peace in the world. Bub did say one morning,"At least we aren't getting shot at!" Like everyone, I would like to see world peace. I am doing what I can in many small ways, such as the www.WebWomenGivingCircle.com and a new organization called Women for Women, where I have become a "sister" and sponsor of a woman in Bosnia.
In contrast to being shot at or raped, there is very little in our lives for 2008 that is going to be "hard" from my perspective. As a matter of fact, I feel incredibly blessed to be where I am today with the people and opportunities I am involved with that make it look to me that 2008 is going to be amazingly wonderful!
Now, the reason I have shared all of this is to ask you how you can make your 2008 amazingly wonderful? The discussion Bub and I had included looking at what we had control over and what we didn't. We couldn't change the oil prices, the numbers of foreclosures or the war. I don't believe in "worrying" about things I can't change. I do believe in taking the realities of the world into consideration when I make my goals or projections, but have found, most of the time, what's "out there" really is much less more important than my beliefs. You gotta remember, I began real estate in 1983 when interest rates were 17%. I was top selling agent my 5th month in the office! I didn't have any beliefs about what was a good market and what was possible. It served me well! I often see new agents do well because of this same thinking.

What beliefs are in the way of you having the most awesome year ever? Are you willing to reframe the belief and have it be empowering?

Are you willing to look at what you can do? Make a whole list of what you do have control over

Are you willing to make goals in areas where you DO have control? Make your goals and give yourself about 20% reserve, so if something doesn't go as planned, you've got a plan B!
