Creating Miracles: Three Cups of Tea
“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”
- Mother Teresa

I love reading and being inspired by unreasonable people who have a dream and set about to make a dent in the world! Often, against all odds and logic, their taking action shifts the direction of the future. I recently finished Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. A mountain climber who went to conquer Mt. Everest, Greg has and has spent the last 15 years building schools in Pakistan. He believes educating girls is important because they can bring peace to the world. His story is amazing.

His vision is inspiring. If you’ve had some struggle in your life lately, do yourself a favor and read this book.

Choosing a vision that you are passionate about and using that energy and passion to create miracles is a great way to approach your business planning. What would you attempt if you knew you couldn’t fail? Why not attempt it anyway? New agents often do very well and try things the people who “know” how it works are skeptical of because they are excited and have a vision. If you need a little inspiration along these lines, watch The Dream Movie. And then, start with a vision for next year that YOU are inspired by. Let go of the “how” to get there. Be very clear in the end result. And, then go to work utilizing every crazy idea and resource that appears! Believe me, it will be a very, very good year!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens
can change the world;
indeed it's the only thing that ever has.”

- Margaret Mead (1901-1978), American Anthropologist

Borrowed Wisdom

"If you don't control what you think, you can't control what you do.
Think first and act afterward."

- Napoleon Hill

Free Think And Grow Rich

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill has been responsible for more self-made success stories than any book I know. It’s the best description of success techniques, the best description of the success mindset, and the best description of setting (and achieving) goals I’ve ever seen. Much of today’s Law of Attraction work is just another spin on the sound advice from this book. My friend, Vic Johnson, is currently giving away 1 Million copies! How cool is that?

Planning for 2010

Are you ready to hit the ground running for your best year ever in 2010? I love consciously creating the coming year in the Fall. I start with the trips and vacations (we are going to spend June of 2010 in Hawaii) and then fill in the rest. I am a recovering control freak…so the visioning part…creating what I want is something I just love! I’d have some ways that we can do this together so you can get more of what you really want in 2010? Are you ready?

Three Ways to Play…One for every Budget:

  1. The $12 Solution - My 34-page 2010 Awesome Year Business Plan has been tweaked and is ready for you to use to get ready for next year. This may be the best investment you make today! Order for yourself…or if you are a manager, this is a cool tool to use with your agents, or as a gift for your real estate clients, if you are an affiliate. I have quantity discounts or only $97 for unlimited use!
  2. The $57 Solution - A 3-session 2010 REALLY SIMPLE Business PlanningTeleConference, using the Awesome Year Plan, that will include masterminding and coaching. December 3, 10 & 17
  3. The You Deserve IT! $1900 Solution- A Full-Day Business Makeover! I have a limited number of days available in the next 3 months to come to you and/or your team or office for a whole day of personalized and customized strategizing and planning.

Borrowed Wisdom
Living Well!

My wonderful husband, Bub Fossland says,”If you’re not enjoying yourself, you’re doing it wrong.

One day I misquoted him and said,”If you aren’t having fun, you’re doing it wrong.” Which, by the way, I do espouse!

But, Bub corrected me, explaining that his quote was about liking oneself. Methinks, this is a very good idea too.

That’s Bub with Jean Baker, his 88 year old Mom on his 65th birthday a few weeks ago!

Read this blog post by Jay White, AKA Dumb Little Man, for 39 other good ideas on living well.

Tech & Social Media

The National Association of Realtors® has been surveying members to find out about their use of technology like websites and blogs for several years. Now, Research, too, has its very own Facebook group, Active Rain and RealTown presences, as well as a presence on Twitter and LinkedIn. Research's social media pages are not only a place for our members to receive insight into our latest surveys, commentaries and reports, but also an avenue for you to make your thoughts known to us and your fellow Realtors®. There may be certain special trends in the marketplace that Research may be unaware of - such as a significant rise in foot traffic at open houses or continuing long delays in getting short sales to close. They'd like this to be an open forum for discussion rather than a one-sided monologue.

Apr. 28, 2009 - Getting What You Expect!

Getting What You Expect!

How do you start your day? Which side of the bed do you get up on??? You know…is it the right side? OR????? Try this simple technique to set your intentions and expectations for the day and give yourself a really great place to start from. Do you realize how much power you possess about what happens each day? It amazes me when I stay conscious to it, instead of rolling out of bed and seeing what happens. Start the day with gratitude that you woke in a nice warm bed and saying to yourself: “It’s going to be a wonderful day.” This sets up a nice filter through which the events of the day will come through. Try this for a week and see how those days are different (or not) from days as usual.

I’ve been enjoying some weekly audio interviews that Speaker, Healer, Author, Jennifer McLean offers. Last week she interviewed Dr. Judith Orloff who has a new book, Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life, and shared some wonderful tips on staying away from the negative. One theme she shared was to look at EVERY single experience as a growth opportunity and to be aware of what that situation is teaching you. In my coaching training, I have found the stuckness that occurs for many clients is not learning anything from a previous lesson and getting to revisit the same situation in different clothing, over and over and over. By becoming more aware and LEARNING the lesson, you can evolve and move to the next place. I loved the quote from the Dalai Lama who said, ”When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

Coach’s Tip:

  1. Start your day with an intention that it be wonderful and then look for evidence all that that it IS!
  2. Examine if there are places you are stuck that you could recontexualize the meaning you have attached to the circumstances, and accept the lesson that is there to help you grow.

How Smart Are You???
Now is the time to get more educated!

Apr. 21, 2009 - Volunteers

Volunteers
As I watered my garden this morning, I saw several volunteers that I hadn’t planted but that had taken root. I have a compost in the garden and some little seeds and a potato had decided they liked the environment. I moved them to a better place with more sunlight and have some brand new plants that are going to yield goodies for me. Gardening has so many good metaphors for doing business in a “green” way, in tune with the natural (and attractive) ways of nurturing “seedlings.”
Spring comes early to Tucson, of course. We are actually expecting 100 degree temperatures this week, so I planted many seeds about a month ago. My tomato plants are 3 feet high and loaded with ping pong sized tomatoes. I also have loads of wildflowers that I intend to harvest seeds from once they have flowered. It is so satisfying to plant these seeds, and them water and see the results in the future.
But back to the volunteers…… I am not sure a potato plant will thrive in Tucson, but I am going to give it lots of water and see what happens. I also have a couple of tomato plant volunteers. Much of my garden is kinda unstructured, wild and unplanned. I doubt that surprises you given my style. I tend to plant stuff here and there and then see where it thriv es. Since my personality isn’t given to lots of structure, so this fits for me….going with my strengths!
Because of this, I am constantly surprised with my harvest and the volunteers are my favorites. They have started to grow on their own. Now, it just takes nurturing and they will turn into a nice harvest. The analogy for me while I was watering was understanding that there were lots of volunteers or additions to my garden that had shown up but were not going to flourish unless I nurtured them.
In my business life, I find, there are volunteers all around me. I try so hard, sometimes, to prove my self-sufficiency not seeing I am surrounded by wonderful people all around me who can help; who would love to grow in my garden; who could add something unexpected and extra to my life. How often have I tried to do it all myself, instead of looking for the volunteers? In my experience with Women’s Council of REALTORS® (WCR), I often see Presidents try too hard to get it right and instead of letting go and trusting that the volunteers will bring something surprising and unexpected. When I take my eye off perfection and allow the natural flow and abundance take me in a little different direction, my results expand and there’s usually lots more fun and collaboration.
Where are the volunteers in your life? Have you been ignoring the opportunity to find clients that are unexpected because you didn’t plant them? Or you didn’t plant them or expect them there? I bet you also have volunteers all around you that would love to give you business if you’d give them water and attention.
Are you doing things YOUR way, using your strengths instead of trying to find a magic pill outside yourself? Are you assiduously planting the seeds for the future AFTER you close that deal to ensure that there will be a future harvest, remembering to drip on those seeds, even if it is going to be another season for harvest?
This week, look for the volunteers. Water them. Ask them to lunch! Have fun with the process and smell the flowers!

Apr. 14, 2009 - Inspiration, Education and Resources

Tuesday Inspiration

As my friend Stephen Fells, from Agency Logic, says... this proves you can’t tell a book from its cover. This was recorded just last weekend. I got tears in my eyes watching it. Do you think there’s no hope to attain that dream you really, really want? Think again.

Tuesday Humor

This explains a LOT! How men’s and women’s brains are different. Even Bub laughed. Share it with your significant other and see if you can relate.

Tuesday Thinkers

Michael Bungay Stanier is such a fascinating guy. He is doing weekly interviews with people on the topic “Doing Great Work.” Many of his interviews are about how to work less and how to eliminate the clutter and crap that gets in the way. You can access the Finding Your Great Work Interviews and choose the ones that speak to you! Or, be like me, and listen to them all! And then thank Michael.

In the interview with Bill Jensen, who wrote The Simplicity Survival Handbook, he shares that information is doubling every 55 days and he asserts we can never expect to keep up with it all or handle it all. We need the courage to start to saying no, and to start eliminating all of the things that don’t really make a difference. A new distinction he brings is “speed freak clarity,” saying it will save 2-4 hours a day. More on Bill’s website: www.SimplerWork.com.

This Week’s Opportunities

1. YES, You CAN afford it! Learn How To Get The Vacation You Deserve: My vacations are now business expenses. 2. 1st Quarter Checkup TeleConference - Are you on track with your 2009 Goals? Join me for an hour-long “check up” by phone. We’ll review your goals and design strategies so you can know what you’ll need to do in the coming quarter to be where you want to be! My Awesome Year Plan (in case you didn’t do a plan) and a 1st quarter Checkup form are included in the $17 cost (an hour of coaching for $17…what value!). Friday April 24 at 9 AM AZ & PDT, Noon EDT.

3. Good Morning Real Estate is only offering their $1 special through April 15. If you sign up before that date, you can access all the speakers that have been interviewed this year. Then the site will be taken off line to rework into something even better.

Apr. 14, 2009 - Happy Tuesday

Thoughts For This Tuesday

The pulse of the world seems a bit happier this week! I love it when that happens. Maybe, it is the wonderful sense of new life and renewal that Spring, Easter and Passover bring. I am thankful for this season. Maybe, it’s watching the saga of a new hero, Captain Richard Phillips (and isn’t it amazing there are pirates? How insulated is the world most of us live in). I am thankful for heroes! Maybe, it’s that we finally are seeing some good financial news and hearing analysts saying the free fall is over. I am thankful for news that doesn’t engender fear. And, really, I’m darn thankful that I woke up this morning above the grass in a warm house and a gorgeous pink sunrise. (Waking up to rain would have been ok too! My garden loves the water). There are 3 resources below to MP3’s and videos that I found wonderful. Enjoy!

So how is life in your world? Are you choosing the news and the thinking that make you feel good? What are you thankful for?

I hope your week is a very happy one. It IS up to you!

Apr. 7, 2009 - Friends of Many Kinds!

I have been thinking about the dynamic of friendship lately. It started with the wonderful outpouring of wishes on my birthday last month. Even though technology makes remembering and sending easier than ever, I was so touched by how many of you took the time to send me wishes. And then 2 weeks later, I found 50 more sent from Plaxo that I have yet to thank people for! I appreciated each and every wish. Thank you. And, I appreciated the SendOut cards I received. If you don't know about this cool service, you can try it out here.

This paragraph should be a good reminder for you to review your system of connecting with and touching all your friends and past customers and clients. If you don't have their birthdays, it might be a good warm call. And be sure to clear your spam folder regularly so you don't miss 50 cards!

So, back to friends...the next way this is showing up in my life is all the people who have asked to be my "friend" on social networks. I may be missing something by not accepting everyone as a friend, but I look at each request and make sure there is some relevance. I can't imagine why an Indian IT guy in Bombay wants to be my friend. I ignore quite a few.

This new way of staying connected is very fun and delicious. Since many of us are home officed, we miss out on the camaraderie and brainstorming that happens in a more traditional office setting. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn can provide this or they can suck a lot of time and cause you to waste productive time or ignore the traditional face to face.Hopefully, you have developed a well thought out strategy. Sherry Chris from BH&G says she spends 2.5 hrs a day on social networking. Tech guru, Amy Chorew, says limit it to 12 minutes a day. What is the magic number for you and your plan?

And, yet more about friends...at Bernice Ross's Awesome Females in Real Estate Conference, she invited a man, John King, to share with us about leadership and teams. His book, Tribal Leadership (for a free audio download) sounds fascinating. In the time he spent with us, we were treated to some very innovative and intriguing thinking about what it takes to connect and lead effectively. One of his findings was that a group of 6 was a perfect size for an activity like brainstorming or project creation. Another was that over 80 people will break into sub-groups and must be managed with that understanding. Several years ago, I actively participated in several small masterminding groups that have since disbanded. I believe I am ready to create a few of these groups again to tap into the shared brilliance that mastermind groups offer.

"No one of us is as smart as all of us."

This inquiry into friends is one I plan to delve into a bit more and I invite you to do the same and let me know what you think!

Mar. 17, 2009 - Are you social? Or Anti-Social? Lessons from the AAR Mid-Winter Conference

Karen Kay and Joeann FosslandWe had a great time this week at the Arizona Assn. of Realtors Winter Conference. In walking the talk…a page was set up for the event and an active Twitter Stream accompanied the 3 day event. For those of you that I am linked to with Facebook…you must have thought I’d gone wild…..I have my Twitter feeds syndicated to my Facebook page which is usually a good thing since I get to post 2 places at once. I found out AFTERWARD how this had completely taken over some people’s status pages. Sorry for that. I also learned there is a way to selectively have it syndicated and I will be using that app next time. I did hear from several people that they liked getting the tips and Twitter feed information. We are all learning from each other what works and what doesn’t! I always appreciate your comments and feedback.

Amy Chorew moderated a very informative panel of experts, Dru Bloomfield, Rob Gibbs, Jay Thompson and Phil Sexton. For the folks there that were not “plugged” in yet, they now know what they need to do and how! NAR is saying less than 5% of Realtors are using Web 2.0 tools like blogging, twitter, etc. to connect. For those who are interested in working with the first time homebuyers, this media is what they are using. Not thinking from a generational standpoint will lose (or gain) you lots of business.

Frances Flynn Thorsen did a great presentation on Risk Management and Social Networking  condensed from her 3 hour CE Class on the topic!

So where are YOU at with your social networking?  What do you need to do to take it to the next level?

The Simple Start to Being Social!!!

1.     The 3 social networking applications you must have are: LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter

2.     How to do it:

·        Choose 1 per week

·         Create a word document with a really complete profile (use the categories from the first one as your template) and then cut and paste for future needs. Be expressive and creative in your descriptions of yourself. Use keywords that define your business and your niches.

·        Upload a picture.

·        Spend no more than 10 minutes a day

3.      Blog: The easiest place to start this is Trulia. Once you upload your profile, they set a blog up for you…so all you need to do is post. Keep it short, simple and valuable alternating market data with information about you and your niche that will entice people to find out more. (A cool way to take this to the next level and totally understand and get in action with a blog is to sign up for the next NoBloggerLeftBehind   Teleconference Series It starts  on Thursday and you can attend the first session at no charge!)

4.     Become a Trulia Pro.  Clicking that link will get you 2 free months and give you an opportunity to tap into their awesome traffic with featured ads on your properties or services.

5.     Connect with me and with others I am connected to:

·        Twitter   http://twitter.com/joeann

·        LinkedIn

·        Facebook

Mar. 10, 2009 - What's Your Patience Quotient?

Patience is not one of my virtues! I even have a little sign in my office I bought years ago that says, God grant me patience, and I want it right now! I’ve often said my cautious, analytical, phlegmatic husband was put in my life to teach me patience. He is actually a wonderful model of it as well as being the polar opposite of my energetic, speedy, and sometimes impulsive nature. Ah, it is so true about how we are attracted in a mate to that which we are missing and then once the attraction (or is it lust?) wears off a bunch, it’s what makes us crazy. But then, I digress….

I choose Patience as the topic this week because of the angst I see many agents feeling and expressing about markets that have not felt “normal’. One of the definitions of patience in Webster’s is “steadfast despite opposition, difficulty, or adversity”. In further researching the word, the thesaurus also added having patience means willing to endure and/or being inconvenienced without complaint.

If you are like most agents I know, this is not your Modus Operandi! We are often driven by a control freak tendency that is sorely tried by waiting patiently for buyers to get off the fence or for the lenders to make a decision on a short sale. In today’s markets, our ability to control the environment and circumstances are illusionary (and this is really so in ALL markets-just more evident when the results are not happening to our satisfaction or expectations!). The timing is not unfolding for most of us quick enough. This doesn’t mean you can’t make a great living now. It just means you have to make some adjustments (or Shift, as Gary Keller says in his book of the same name).

You know, as a coach, I am always directing you to look at what you CAN do from where you are. If actually developing some patience with yourself, the clients and the environment isn’t possible, the shift can be to examining your expectations and systems. Your expectations are one of the most powerful drivers for your satisfaction. It is often said, ”we get what we believe.” I know this is true for me and for most of my clients. Our clear vision and expectation of the future we want leads to actions and synchronicities that lead us there, many times, in unexpected ways and times.
Having the ability to feel certain the harvest that you want is coming because you are planting the seeds and watering them is a demonstration of patience. The universe seems to have a sense of humor with the timing thing, it seems to me. The harder I try to MAKE something happen, the longer it seems to take. I have been inquiring into the distinction of allowing vs forcing. Going with the flow and trusting myself, knowing if I am taking daily actions, I am moving towards what I want.

The one thing I do know is that frustration right now is not a useful emotion. If you are in a fog, moving 3 feet in ANY direction is good!

Coach’s Actions Steps >

  1. Visit your attitude. Is there a shift from Forcing to Allowing that would lighten things up and feel better? Re-contextualize the immediate environment.
  2. Visit your systems. Do they address today’s market needs? Do you need to add items to the value you are creating for buyers and sellers? What?
  3. Visit your support systems. Do you regularly spend time with a mastermind group or coach who can help with the perspective and fresh ideas?

Borrowed Wisdom

How do you stay focused on your vision for the future, instead of sucked into the worries about everything you hear around you? James Ray was one of the teachers in The Secret. He shares this wisdom,

"Most people look at their current state of affairs and they say "this is who I am". That is not who you are. That is who you were. Let's say for instance that you don't have enough money in your bank account, or you don't have the relationship that you want, or your health and fitness aren't up to par. That is not who you are; that is the residual outcome of your past thoughts and actions. So we're constantly living in this residual, if you will, of the thoughts and actions we have taken in the past. When you look at your current state of affairs and define yourself by that, then you doom yourself to have nothing more than the same in the future".

What you focus on expands….to move past your current circumstances, a passionate vision, a certainty in your worth and your gifts, are the lighthouse on the shore that holds success.

Feb. 24, 2009 - Time To Start Thinking of Spring Cleaning!

I love Tucson! It may not be Spring yet where you are, but we’ve had a week of 80 degree weather here this week. The wildflowers I planted a few months ago are almost ready to bloom. We spent last week with birthday’s galore: My youngest, my daughter Dawn turned 40, granddaughter Julia turned 2, and step-granddaughter Emelie is now 11. So I threw a party for February birthdays! My good friend, Mary Pope Handy, also had a big birthday this month and is throwing a party! Smart lady-have fun and connect with friends and clients!

How I love parties……. It was so much fun to relax and enjoy friends and family. The house gets such a nice cleaning and organizing when we are planning a party, a sense of order feels good. We’ve been in this house for 26 years and moving is probably going to be the only way to get my husband to let go of things! I have made peace with the fact that this man won’t change and since I’ve invested 31 years with him, it’s pretty silly to let his habits drain my energy! I listened to Byron Katie say the other day, ”If the socks on the floor bother you, pick them up!” (see below in Resources a call with her tonight)

So, for me, it’s was about where can I make impact and I didn’t have to go very far to see the obvious answer: my office. I discovered there were files and notebooks from my old CoachU days (95-95) and tech files I’ve saved that date back to 2000. So I tackled the letting go of lots of old paperwork. I’m giving away books as well. Throwing away floppy disks! I don’t even have a machine to put them in. Maybe you don’t hold onto stuff like this, but if you do, how about making it a project this month to LET GO?

This is a good fit for using the Law of Attraction, by the way. If you want to attract good stuff, make room for it. Overstuffed filing cabinets, bookshelves and closets don’t give you room for the new, good stuff. Now, I am not espousing waste. Do recycle. We have a great listserve called www.Freecycle.com here that connects people who have stuff to give away and people who need stuff. There may be one in your town too. When you put anything back out into the universe, it releases energy. Letting go gives you more energy and gives others that energy! Pretty cool, huh? I bet you could fill 1-2 garbage bags with stuff you don’t need any more.

While you are clearing the physical mental space, how is your internal level of stuff draining energy? I use, with my clients, a coaching checklist called Clean Sweep that you can use to see where your energy drains are. The assessment has a 25 point checklist for four areas of your life: environment, health, finances and relationships. Realize that EVERYTHING that doesn’t work, that annoys you, that you are putting up with and tolerating is draining energy. Some of it you can do something about and starting today with just one of those items, will lessen the outflow of wasted energy. Some of those things you can’t do anything about and you need to stop worrying or suffering over. Let go and accept it is the way it is. Life isn’t fair. NEXT>>>>> Because there are so many great ways you can spend your energy to make a difference. Take the Clean Sweep and see if it helps you identify some areas to “clean-up” “buff up” or let go of. It doesn’t matter where you start with this assessment, but the goal is to get to about 90 because at that place, you’ll notice there is a lot less drag!

There’s one last area I am going to suggest that can lift a weight from your shoulders. What are you still doing or belonging to or volunteering time with that no longer holds passion for you? Sometimes, we keep doing things out of habit, or say yes when we really don’t want to so someone else will be happy with us. Let go here! Personally, I did this lately in a couple of areas that were hard to let go of, but that I knew weren’t serving me or anyone else because my passion had waned. I sold The Real Estate Games to Coach Patti at the end of last year. And I decided to leave the faculty of No Blogger Left Behind. Both of these courses are fantastic and you’ll still get great benefit with Coach Patti or Frances Flynn Thorsen, but it was time for me to move on. Right now, I am really focused on not having my energy be dissipated by too many obligations. It feels good. I am loving my life.

Use March to get a jump on this, and I’ll bet if you do, you’ll see the results in production in the 2nd Quarter of the Year!
