Sep. 25, 2005 - Bliss in Chimayo

The sun rose into a clear blue sky and a day with just a hint of fall crispness in the air. We spent last night at a bed and breakfast called Rancho de Chimayo, built in 1870. The room has a fireplace in one corner, wood floors, high ceilings and thick adobe walls fronting a beatiful little courtyard with tall trees, flowers and a fountain. Unhooked from TV and high  speed connections and cell phone accessability, relaxation is the operative word. The real reason we are here is for the restuarant across the street, owned by the same Jarimillo family.
Last night Bub got his chile rellenos and sopapilas. We sampled a Chimayo Cocktail, which was an interesting combination of tequila, apple cider and other stuff.
This morning, we are back to enjoy breakfast as this sun rises. Bub tries the blue corn and buttermilk pancakes with is eggs and sausage and Pinon Coffee. I have green chili over my omelet with cheese, chirizo and mushrooms. What a way to start the day.
We drive off mid morning through Espanola in search of a tennis court, though, after that breakfast, I doubt we would have been light on our feet. Everyone just said we probably needed to go back to Santa Fe for a court...so we gave that up and took the road to Ojo Caliente. This is Georgia O'Keefe country with her beloved Ghost Ranch 10 miles up a fork in the road. The vistas are wide and look like her famous paintings. The feeling of being suspended somewhere that time is abundant and moving as it should descends. Ojo Caliente has been a place where people have enjoyed the healing waters for centuries. Separate pools of Iron, Soda, Arsenic, Litho hot water bubble to the surface. One tub offers mud to slather on before baking a bit in the sun. Bub wasn't interested in this, (nor would he go in the arsenic pool!) but I found it like a glorious spa wrap. I had scheduled an hour massage. Bliss is the best word I can use to describe the day.
