People Watching on The Marginal Way
This scenic walk in Ogunquit Maine is a little over a mile long and meanders along the edge
of the sea up along a cliff. Many benches dot the walk, making it inviting to sit and just watch the waves crash on the
granite rocks below.
The first day we were here, we walked from Perkins Cove towards Ogunquit's beautiful 3 mile long pristine beach.
As we walked I noticed, while some people were chatting as they walked, most had fairly serious looks on their faces.
So, later, when we walked back to
Perkins Cove I decided to say hello and smile at each person as we passed. I was surprised that about one third looked
away & pretended not to have heard my greetings. Women were more likely than men to say hello. But I wonder if my
husband hadn't been walking behind me (grumbling that I should stop-I sounded like a parrot!) would more men have said
hello?
There were people who happily replied and seemed happy I'd smiled & greeted them. I got smiles, "hi's" "hello's" and
one "howdy". Others seemed a little uncomfortable but responded, I imagine, to be polite.
Isn't it nice that the most pressing activity I have this week is to do a survey of responses to hello? Life is good!

Interesting or Interested?
Being Interested
Rather Than Interesting
Do you try to impress others rather than
connecting? Be honest, now. Are your conversations with people
about you or about them. The best sales people ask lots of
questions. Just like a good coach, a salesperson who rally listens
to the client will be the chosen one.
When you listen and are interested
(think curious like a five year old):
-
You will discover what is really
important to them (the money, the timeframe, the perfect
house)
-
You will hear what their fears
are
-
They will get themselves excited about
their future and their dreams and not be so dug in about what they
have to get out of their present house
-
People relax and trust you more
easily
Many times, we ask questions with
practiced responses or spend the whole time they are talking
waiting to tell them why we are the answer to their problem. While,
your ways of differentiating and getting the job done are
important, you can only know the best solutions after you have
heard what they are thinking. Our assumptions about what is
important to them are often inaccurate. Be interested and learn and
then you have the cards in your hand to play the game! Winners
connect.

SDA and More
Joeann's Tuesday Tip - September 11,
2007
I've been working on lots of
things to help you and my clients with planning for an Awesome
2008! The Awesome Year Plan is done
and is 35 pages of step by step planning. My annual Business Planning
Retreat is going to be called REINVENTION this year and will be
an intimate and invigorating event for 40 people in Kona Hawaii on
January 25-27.
In doing the work to plan the planning, I am reminded of
one of my favorite tools...
the SDA,
or
Single Daily
Action
While complex business planning can yield
great results, sometimes, the simple way is even more
effective! Each year I ask my coaching clients a couple of
questions:
-
What ONE action,if you did it
consistently, would make the most difference in your
business?
-
What ONE action, if you did it
consistently, would make the most difference in your personal
life?
Write down your answers right now and
post them! And then each and every day, look at these SDAs and do
them!
Simple? Yes! Easy? Maybe not..... But, your awareness of what could
make the most difference each day, will give you a focus that will
slowly and steadily build your business and your life better and
better each day. By the end of a month or the end of the year, you
will be amazed at the results!

The Tuesday Tip is.......SIMPLIFY
Ralph Waldo Emerson said," The world is
enlarged for us, not by new objects, but by finding more affinities
and potencies in those we have."
I've got the urge these days to simplify, unclutter and
make things less complicated. The world all around me seems to want
to add more and complicate my life. It reminds me of Lily's second Christmas when
she was playing happily with a new toy and her uncle Richard wanted
his present unwrapped and pushed it toward her. She shook her head
no. He pushed it again and again she said no. Finally he put it in
her lap and she screamed, "NO MORE PRESENTS!" There are days
that I feel exactly that way...there are too many opportunities,
too many wonderful new tech toys, too many classes I'd love to
teach, too many books to read......How can I possibly keep
up?
Just
the saying words simplify,
unclutter, relax brings a feeling of calmness to me. Whether
I think of them in the context of things, or time or clutter in my
head, there is a peace that feels great in both thinking about
simplifying and, of course, even more so when I actually rid my
life of the unnecessary. It
produces a lightness! I am asking myself "who said?" I needed to do
all of this, have all these things? Is what I have and what I am
doing adding to a more joyful life or adding
stress?
On
this month's The FSBO Real Estate
Game™,
two participants have identified as one of their goals to spend 20
hours organizing their workspaces. Is it time to tackle yours? Or
is it time to throw stuff out? What can you do
to simplify just 1 thing today?
Lao Tzu in his book, The Tao of Peace
noticed,"Great trouble comes from not
knowing what is enough. Great conflict arises from wanting too
much. When we know when enough is enough, there will always be
enough."
You also may be
interested in thinking a bit more about being time effective: Here
is a recent
post from my ActiveRain Blog: Have You Tamed The Time
Thieves?
Some
fun:
Your 15
minutes of fame can begin here: NAR has a new campaign
titled "The Face of Real Estate for 100
Years" and they
are soliciting photos of members to be a part of a
huge mosaic of REALTOR® faces arranged to represent the Realtor®
"R" membership mark. It is easy,
get your NERDS # and upload a photo and you'll be a part of
it!
