"Do It Now!"

Posted at 3:53 PM, Jan. 8, 2008

Happy New Year! It's 2008 and I, like every other professional Realtor, have resolved to do things differently this year. In my quest for inspiration and motivation toward achieving this resolution, I began reading Rossi's Dog & Dog & Vice Versa.

Chapter One: "Do It Now!" In this opening chapter, Rossi talks about all the simplicity and power of Nike's famous slogan; Just Do It. How we can over complicate, over research and overpay the simplest of actions. He uses an example that resonated with me; "don't try, do it and do it now". Rossi masterfully illustrates that by saying, "I'll try.", we're really saying, "No. I won't be doing that." He asks, "Have you ever been invited somewhere you did not want to go and instead of being honest and just saying, NO THANKS, we say, I"LL TRY. When what we really mean is; I have absolutely no intention of attending."

I resolve not to try but to DO IT NOW! Thanks Rossi!

Hi Jim,

I haven't read the book, yet. But your posting has struck a cord with me.  Last spring I attended a NJ fund raiser for Hope Unlimited for Children, a charity saving lives of Brazilian street kids that I have supported for more than a decade.  During a break in several presentations, a challenge was put to me to make a visit to the campus located in Campinas, Brazil, as several in attendance had done.

I was to be in Sao Paulo, which is approximately 90-minutes south by car, the following month.  You guessed it - I gave the lame response, "I'll try to go."  Fortunately, these strangers did not accept my answer; telling me that I had no excuse not to see what was being accomplished with the children.  I agreed and began making arrangements that evening to go.  It was a life changing positive experience!

Life is funny.  We sometimes travel different paths to reach the same place.  I seems you and I have been lucky to rediscover the simplicity of honesty and commitment.  Either say, "No" or Do it Now!

Hi MJ:

Thank you for your comments.  I hope you don't mind but I found them so inspiring that I read them to my company at our annual "Kick-Off"" Meeting today!

May this year bring you success in every aspect of your life.

Slainte,

Jim
