Apologies

The last two years have been miserable ones in this industry. And, the human toll has been awful. When faced with the overwhelming pain, fear, anger and misery it is human nature to want to pull away.

I was reminded today of how this is impacting both real estate agents and the clients we serve. The story was about a soldier coming back from deployment over seas, living in a hotel room with his family, trying desperately to get a happy ending for all of them. They were buying a foreclosure and, as usual, the process seemed never ending.

People under stress can react with anger and rudeness. Clients under stress often take that stress out on agents. The agents, out of self-preservation often pull back, even hide. Over time, given enough stress, even good agents can find themselves trying to avoid client contact. Who needs more stress, especially when you have so little power sometimes to make things better?

But being there for our clients, really listening, telling them the truth, good or bad and sometimes just telling them we have nothing to tell them is what needs doing right now.

So, for all the clients for whom I haven't been a good enough listener, for those whose pain I avoided in order to spare myself, I apologize. I'm going to take better care of me so I can take better care of you!

So True! I have found that the agents who have a balance to their lives are the ones who make it in this industry. Why? Well, for one they are not overwhelmed and give themselves the time and breaks they need as human beings. It is so important, especially in this market to remember we need to take care of our mental and physical health.  By doing so we present a happier, more positive and honest side rather then a tired, worn out and frustrated appearance. Who wants to be around someone who is negative?  No One!  Sometimes it becomes difficult to remember to give ourselves a break, but then I always remind myself if i am not happy, my clients wont be happy. Treat yourselves as you would treat others and you will be richer in more ways then one!

Have a good one!

Thank you so much Julie! I thought I was alone with these feelings. It can get pretty brutal out there today and we need to remember that many times clients/customers do not let us know the difficulties they are experiencing so we take their anger & frustration personally.

Alice,

Thanks for your comment! The people who know me best would tell you that I'm absurdly optimistic. But it hasn't always felt that wy this year. I'm working at improving that!

Take care of yourself! It's hard to really listen if our own stuff is getting in the way!

I totally agree.  Communication is the key.  In these  times it is very important that we call, e-mail, and listen to our clients.  We need to explain to them that the market is what calls for the price of their home.  It is does not matter what they paid for their home 3  or 5 years ago.  Homes are not selling for that now. The market has changed and if they do not price their homes competitively and  strategically it will not sell in this market.   The flip side is that when they buy they will get  the benefits and make up on the buy side.  Most important is that we as Realtors need to not take things personally.  We can not change the market. The only thing we can change is our attitude.  We need to stay positive, remember that our clients come first, and know that this to will pass.
