What are your thoughts on the proposed automakers bailout plan? Think it's a good idea?

Personally I think they should file for bankruptcy protection like any other business would have to. I understand there is a lot at stake but just think if they don't work out their labor, supplier, and plant contracts that throwing money at them would just prolong the inevitable. Working under the bankruptcy laws would allow them to re-negotiate the contracts and make them stronger more profitable companies.

I am not in favor of an automaker bailout. It seems to me that the US auto industry has been in trouble for a long time and the government would only be prolonging the inevitable.

If the government is going to invest, I feel it should go toward developing green transportation technology and energy innovations. Save and/or create new jobs through new research and development investment. The financial bailout was one thing, but the US auto industry is an albatross and perhaps it is time to move toward the future.

Investment in new technology = a positive future for the US

Just my thoughts,

I don't think it's the auto manufacturing that is taking GM down. It was their foray into lending as GMAC that pulled the rug out from under them. Take a look at their 2007 and 2008 quarterly reports. They went into the high gain and high risk area of lending with the new millinium regulations and found that they should have instituded some regulations of their own....just like several other major investment banks and lenders.

However...they could opt to build vehicles with more comfortable back seats, rear air conditioning and better gas mileage. I look at all the sun every day here in Hawaii and keep wondering why I can't plug my car every night into a solar powered system that would recharge it ovenight!
