Using Google Alerts for Blog Post Ideas and More

Jan. 22, 2008
Here's a little secret that pro writers and bloggers won't always share with you.

It's called Google Alerts and to be honest, it saves my butt more times than I care to go on about.

Here's how it works. You set up an alert at the Google Alerts site by entering a search term, the type of alert you wish to receive, and the frequency.

Then, let Google do its magic. If you enter a term like "Clayton NC Real Estate" you'll get websites blogs, press releases and more sent to your inbox at the frequency you asked for that relate to that phrase. I use it to keep an eye on the local real estate market as well as a source of info for blog posts, and as a way to keep an eye on my clients' competition. And MY competition for that matter. Quite often, I'll know when a new competitive threat is at hand before my clients thanks to Google Alerts. And guess who looks like a hero? Me. And now - you can too.

I have no less than 20 alerts set up. When I'm working on a special project, I may have as many as 100 set up for my own use and client purposes.

Give it a try. It's not perfect...you'll see some spam blog posts with your search term in them but 90% of the results are relevant.

Email me if you have any questions.

I agree with you.  I use google alerts for monitoring my name and my company.  I use Drudgreport for ideas for my blog.  I think your idea is great.

Is it at all possible to use Google Alerts for a listing expiration notice (a given # of days in advance) by notifying the listing broker or agent?  That would be awesome.

One could probably plug into the RMLS, but the local MLS system may be out of the question.  I may have answered my own question here, but please share your thought on this.

Larry, when I'm not sure about something I'm the first to say it. And as for your question about MLS expiration notices, I'm not sure.

If there were a national MLS system with an algorithm in place to generate the numbers, then I'd say it could be possible for Google to get involved, track and make every property searchable on Google.com. But your best bet may be to contact the webmaster who runs your local MLS site and talk to them. They may be able to generate a tool that can help.

John, thanks for your kind words. As a side note to Google Alerts, the conent you get from them doesn't just have to be used online in blogs and websites or in print. You can take the info and turn it into a podcast very easily as well. I see PR agencies charge hundreds (even thousands) of dollars to do the most boring of podcasts.

There is a way to bring life to podcasts. If anyone's interested, contact me.
