Monterey Park Kiwanis and the Key Club

This Past regular Luncheon meeting, our Kiwanis group had the pleasure to invite the Key Club from the Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra. These fine young students were very much involved in the community

Jason, the president of the Key Club spoke about different issues concerning the high school students. One of the issues was regarding drinking at the age of 18. It was quite informative.

Kudos to the wonderful group

The Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities.

Today, Key Club exists on more than 5,000 high school campuses, primarily in the United States and Canada. Growth efforts, however, have taken the Key Club experience internationally to Canada, the Caribbean nations, Central and South America, and most recently to Asia and Australia.

Preventing Summer break-ins and mail thieves

How to avoid being vulnerable:

  1. Use common sense. When items are purchased in boxes, don't leave the pachaging out on the curb to advertise your new acquisitions. Cut the boxes into pieces and recycle if possible.
  2. When you go on vacation, suspend newspaper and mail delivery. The post office will hold your mail until your return or can forward it to another address. To arrange this, go online to www.usps.com and chlick "receiving mail" There is no charge for the service
  3. Consider using electric timers when you are not in. It is inexpensive and worthwhle to set it up. Keeping your place looking occupied as much as possible. Timers also can control  a radio or television to make it sound occupied
  4. Your mail delivery should never be tossed into the trash. Destroy documents using a paper shredder. Shredders are inexpensive. Don't forget to shred credit card offiers. Call (888) 5-OPTOUT (567-8888) to have your name removed from direct marketing lists. including credit card offers. You can also opt out for free at OptOutPrescreen.com.  The comsumer credit reporting industry website

I hope these information will help you and a little common sense would help to protect your valuables

Kiwanis Welcomes Princess Ramey of Children Law Center

Ms Princess Ramey gave us a great presentation about the Childrens Outreach Program at the Childrens Law Center, our group donated some money and toys

Princess V.F. Ramey, Community Outreach Coordinator
Ms. Ramey joined CLC in 1993, after working briefly in family law and mediation. Ms. Ramey has served on a number of committees and boards, been featured on the Discovery Channel, and was honored as a "Foster Care Hero" by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2003. In addition to supervising other trial attorneys, Ms. Ramey serves as the CLC Community Outreach Coordinator. In that capacity she manages donor-related programs and oversees the CLC intern program and recruitment of interns.

  Children's Court

Almost 30,000 children who are victims of abuse and neglect are entrusted to the care of the Los Angeles County Juvenile Dependency Court system.

The court's primary mission is to ensure that these youth are safe, healthy, and secure. Whenever possible, the court strives to preserve and strengthen families so children can be raised in their own homes. When this is not possible, the court orders provision of temporary foster homes and supervises the children’s care.

The court works to ensure that all youth receive permanent homes in a timely fashion, either through reunification with their rehabilitated parents or through adoption, legal guardianship, or long-term foster care.  In Los Angeles County Dependency Court proceedings, children are appointed their own attorney, usually a lawyer from the Children’s Law Center.

In an effort to be sensitive to children’s feelings and make the court proceedings less intimidating, Los Angeles established the country’s first courthouse especially designed for children and families.  The Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court in Monterey Park features twenty-five courtrooms designed to be more accessible to children.  Well-appointed waiting areas reduce stress and trauma. Special areas accommodate family visits, and other areas provide activities to help occupy children awaiting court appearance.  An auxiliary Dependency Court located in the Lancaster Courthouse serves children and families living in the Antelope Valley.

For more information about the Los Angeles County Juvenile Court, see www.lasuperiorcourt.org
