I'm a big fan of the Alex Cross novels by James Patterson. I also enjoy his Women's Murder Club series.

I'm about to bust, while I wait for Janet Evanovich's new book, "Fearless Fourteen".

I'm also looking forward to Laurell Hamilton's "Blood Noir" and Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn"

If anyone has any recommendations for me, that would be great. Thanks.

One author whose work I am always impressed by is Pulitzer Prize winning Michael Chabon.

Consistently excellent.

Perhaps the opposite of what you are asking for, though, as with each work he comes up with completely new characters and settings. In "Kavalier & Clay" it is comic book artists in the 1940s New York City. In "Wonder Boys" it is academics, writers, and students at a college sponsored writing convention. In "Gentlemen of the Road" the setting is the Kingdom or Arran around AD 950. "The Yiddish Policeman's Union" is set in Alaska.

So, an author to consider when you don't want to read part of a series.
