Poppler knows surfing. She also knows about cancer.
The mother of five, a surfing icon in the 1970s, was diagnosed in 1986 with malignant melanoma on her hip.
Pregnant with her second child, Poppler was forced into having the cancer removed by surgery. It also meant she had to lose her growing fetus.
"My husband (Dr. Greg Bartlow) is a cancer reconstruction surgeon and dermatology specialist, but another cancer surgeon had to go in and take a football of meat out of my hip," Poppler said in a 2000 interview. "It was like the tip of an iceberg. They didn't know how long I had to live, and they had to take the baby. I went through so much trauma.
"After that, I didn't go to the doctor for 10 years, and when I did finally go, they didn't find anything. I'm like in this one percentile. It helped that I have a good attitude, but I'm a rare example. It's like, 'I'm here. Hello!'"
Poppler, who still surfs four to five times a week, is a survivor; many diagnosed with cancer are not so fortunate.
For those who are fighting the disease, the Luau & Longboard event, which will be held beginning at 7 a.m. at Scripps Pier in La Jolla, is a step in finding a cure.
The event brings together surf legends and friends as they raise money for continued research grant programs at the UCSD Cancer Center.
"The money raised at the UCSD Cancer Center Luau & Longboard Invitational is so important to the ultimate goal of the Cancer Center," said event Chairman Ken Powers. "Some of these funds are used to start new research that could save a family member or friend someday."
After the early-morning surfing event, including the finals, which begin at 11:15 a.m., a Hawaiian-style luau will follow until 5 p.m.
Music and dancers will entertain at the luau. Raffle prizes and live auction items and a screening of the surfing classic "Big Wednesday" round at the evening.
"This surfing event is probably the finest put on in surfing," Poppler said. "Maybe it's not the hot, young pros doing their thing, but as an event, it's just got a lot of good will and camaraderie and history.
"The legends come and open their hearts and take time to talk to everybody and anybody about cancer. It's a great opportunity for public awareness and for people to meet professional surfers from around the world."--The 30th anniversary of the classic surfing film "Big Wednesday" coincides with this surf fundraiser's 15th anniversary. A special screening of the film takes place June 26, with appearances by Denny Aaberg from the film. Reception begins at 6 p.m. with the film screening at 7 p.m. at La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas.
The 15th Annual Luau and Longboard Invitational features world surfing legends, and plenty of music and food make this day-long affair memorable and a powerful showing of good will and support for Moores UCSD Cancer Center on August 24, with a Longboard Legend Surf Contest starting at 8 a.m. Free entry. At noon there's the Luau and Special Auction at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla.

Batter buffet
In addition to the standard fried Twinkies, fried Oreos, fried meat on a stick and assortment of fried veggies, this year's concession menu includes possibly the most grotesque concoction known to Western civilization: a fried chicken and cheese sandwich fashioned out of a Krispy Kreme donut. After you pig out, wash it all down with a nice, tall fried cola. Yes, fried cola. Good luck figuring that one out.
