Our Founder

What can be said about Marmaduke that hasn't already been said. Simply put, he is The New Riders of the Purple Sage.  Great songwriter, great singer, leader of the band.  Unfortunately his many health issues will probably mean The High Times Doobie Awards show was the last time we'll see him perform.  I had the pleasure only three times, I can only find evidence of the band playing San Diego once in 71 w/ The Dead, and three shows in 74.  These were the three I saw live, during the Skip Battin era.  Fantastic shows, 3/8/74 my buddies and I were 6" off the stage between Duke and Battin, close enough to speak between songs. This was a venue that held maybe 300.  I would have liked to see some of the other incarnations but I treasure the memories of these very special times of my life. Lets all keep John in our prayers, maybe we can see him perform again.

David Nelson Then and Now

David Nelson, only current Rider not to have been featured yet on the blog.  One of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite albums, (High Rollers, Who are those Guys) without David's distinctive vocals would have been just another crappy Terry Melcher song.  His vocals along with his smoking lead guitar were a major part of the early days, and even more so now with Marmaduke not able to participate in the reunion.

Check out www.nelsonband.com to see what David is up to.

New Reader (poster)

Wow!!! Somebody is out there!  Welcome to Neon Gods, who kindly sent these pics of the rest of the reformed band members.

Which brings up the point...If you have comments, just leave them under comments.  If you have pics, stories or rememberences,  more like something to start a new thread, e mail them and (within reason) I will post them as a new thread.  Neon, I am somewhat limited as to space, couldn't post all the pics you sent, but they are appreciated.

NRPS Reunion Shows/Thoughts/Tape Traders

Well, it looks like it's really gonna happen.  The New Riders of the Purple Sage in a series of reunion shows on the east coast.    Sadly, two originals (plus "later original" Skip Battin) have passed to Rock and Roll heaven.  Marmaduke will not be able to participate due to continuing health issues.  But to see Cage and Nelson together again will be a real treat.  I will be unable to attend (I'm on the west coast) but watch this space, I should have a review from my chief reporter from the first nights show at The Rain Forest in CT soon after the show.  I know it will be great, Falzarano is a great addition.  I just can't help but think, I wonder if anyone contacted Stephan A Love,  bassist, singer (IMHO the best pure voice in all the various line ups of the band) and songwriter extrordinaire, or Patrick Shanahan, drummer following Spencer, to try to get them involved.  That would give fans 4/5th of an actual line up.  Not the originals, but close.  Dare to dream...

Here is the schedule

Oct
     5 – www.raindesert.com Danielson, CT
     6 – www.mexicalibluescafe.com Teaneck, NJ
     7 - www.joyouslake.com Woodstock, NY
     8 – www.harvestfest.com Bainbridge, NY
     9 - www.brownies23east.com – Ardmore, PA

Come out and see the guys, if you can.  You'll be glad you did.

Watch this space...I am now listed with Google and Blog Catolog.  As new readers come on board, I plan to set up the Tape Trader Section.  I have mostly "Battin era" NRPS shows, including a show which I was fortunate enough to have attended 3/8/74 from JJ's club in San Diego.  Sound is fair, but the best set I've heard from the Battin era.  Also I have a good selection of Skip solo shows and Battin era Burrito Bros.  To start, I think we'll keep it to trades, later maybe some B&P.

New readers, make sure you leave some evidence you were here, so I'll know you're there.
