WILMINGTON NEWCOMERS CLUB
Wilmington, NC
Membership Chairman: Nancy Brennan
We meet monthly at 9:30am on the 2nd Thurs of the month at the Lily's Banquet Room, located at 5025 Market Street, behind the Green Tree Inn, along the north side of the Ramada Inn. We have refreshments and coffee and an interesting program and sign-ups for our satellite groups which are our main thrust. We have about 30 to 40 special interest groups where members can follow their particular interest and make new friends along the way. They are as diverse as bridge clubs, walking groups, painting, book clubs, garden clubs, and travel groups. We also have a very active Community Service group of which we are very proud.
This club was founded in 1952 by 17 women. It was sponsored by the Welcome Wagon organization and the YWCA, where meetings were held the first few years, said Nancy Brennan, membership chairman. About 50 people came to the first meeting. Now the club has about 250 members, who pay $35 a year. Members can stay three years. (It's a newcomers club, after all.) Scene 3, is a club open to all but joined by many "graduating" Newcomers members. Call President Gerri Wendt at 383-3556 for information about that club.
