What's Wrong with This Picture?

ECAR’s Golf Tournament is ready to roll. I heard Lisa Norton and Sam Kinkaid going down the checklist just today.

“Date?”

“Check – September 19”

“Location?”

“Check – Indian Bayou Golf & Country Club in Destin”

“That’s good; it’s easy for everyone to get to and we haven’t played there before.

“Sponsors?”

“Check – we’ve been blessed with generous sponsors!”

“Contests, prizes, raffles?”

“Check… check… check!”

“Players?” …

“Players???”   …

“Sam!? Do we HAVE PLAYERS!!?”

At this point the scene got crazy. Tears were flowing, hair was pulled (their own, not each other’s), and papers were tossed around trying to find any lost registration sheets.

After they calmed down, they did what anyone would do in that situation. They got on the phone and called ECAR.

“Pat,” they sobbed, “do we have any players signed up for the golf tournament?”

I couldn’t hear Pat’s answer, but it must not have been good because the sobs got worse.  That’s when I snuck away saying I had to go break a computer or something.

The fact is, with just over a week left before the ECAR Annual Charity Golf Tournament, only a few teams have signed up to play. The Realtor Outreach Committee is bewildered, and frankly, so am I.

ROC lowered the cost from $100 to $85. It’s tax deductable (although, I’m not a tax accountant, so consult your local tax attorney… oops, there goes the eighty-five bucks). Members can even charge the $85 to their accounts.

In years past this was the event of the season. As I write this, I can hear a voice echoing in my head (it kind of sounds like Don Dineen). “Why, in my day we used to challenge other offices to try to beat us … the sissies.” Has everyone lost their sense of camaraderie? Their sense of community? Their sense of “let’s kick their butts?”

But,  I think I might have the answer as to why people aren’t signing up to play. I’ve heard a lot of talk. Let me share with you what I’ve heard, although keep in mind that my hearing may not be very good.

THE TOP TEN REASONS REALTORS AREN’T SIGNING UP FOR THE ECAR GOLF TOURNAMENT:

#10… It’s too cold in September to play golf; nobody wants to attend an ECAR event where you might need to bring a sweater.
#9… Indian Bayou’s course doesn’t have a windmill hole and they make you use all of the clubs. Not only that, but the balls aren’t pretty colors. I’ll sign up when they have one at Goofy Golf.
#8… ECAR staff always cheats so that they can win the duffer’s award. That can’t possibly be that bad every year!
#7… There is too much free beer, wine, soda, and food. I would hate to take advantage of the generous sponsors by eating their food and drinking their beer
#6… I live in Niceville and it’s not convenient to – oh wait… Niceville is close to Destin… um, I live in Seagrove Beach, and Fort Walton Beach is so far – oh wait… the tournament isn’t in Fort Walton Beach this year… um, I live in Destin and I don’t know how to get there! [Okay, that’s one I’ll buy, because we all know that Realtors sit at their desks all day long and never travel the streets.]
#5… I was saving the $85 to pay the IRS at the end of the year.
#4… It’s not the last minute yet and I only sign up for things at the last minute.
#3 …I was going to sign up, but then I saw the video of Lisa and Sam and got scared.
#2… Golf tournament? What golf tournament?

AND THE #1 REASON WHY MEMBERS AREN’T SIGNING UP FOR THE GOLF TOURNAMENT…

#1… I don’t want to donate to a charity that I may have to use next year if the market doesn’t pick up!

Please. Don’t make excuses. Sign up and play. It is a ton of fun. There’s food, and drinks, and prizes, and entertainment (especially if you follow the ECAR staff around… we are that bad!). And it’s for an excellent cause.

Please, fill out a form. You don’t have to know how to play. You don’t have to set up your own team. You get to spend four hours on a lovely golf course (longer if you’re behind us).  And you don’t even have to have the money (in the words of Jeff Foxworthy: “a check, oh I thought you wanted real money!”)

Great entry, Geoff!  C'mon everyone!  Come celebrate our birthday with Sam and me!  It will be a great time, and Sam and I and our team will "kick your butt"!  Well, if nothing else you will get a kick out of watching me play (from a distance, recommended), as I haven't touched my clubs since the ECAR tournament in '06!  Don't tell Sam, please!?!

Geoff:

You're a smart guy, unfortunately maybe too "accociation leadership correct" you danced around like edge of the true issue like Fred Astaire but you did not sting like a bee.

Let's tell it like it is; leadership has drifted further away from addressing the needs of membership. I think membership is telling you we don't need another golf outing, most definitely do not need another tax deductable contribution and do not need another goofy gift.

What membership wants leadership does not have the backbone to deliver. They are like little white labratory mice stuck in the wheel afraid to jump off.

Membership does not need free food or drink what they need is leadership. This market is not fun for anyone and when we get the opportunity to take four hours off we really don't want to spend it with a bunch of other broke, negitive sad-sack realtors; I know I for one would rather spend that time strengthening my family ties.

Please tell membership we don't need more realtors, we don't need anymore outings and we cannot fund anymore fund raisers. If leadership hasn't heard; right now we the realtors are our favorite non-profit organizations.

If you want to bring realtors together do it with something that benefits the realtors' bottom line. Tell them how to make money, tell them how to get through this.

Hey Geoff,

I loved your blog.  I do remember that meeting with the tears and paper shuffing.    Heck, I have never played golf in my life but I told Sam to sign me up, that I would play, but I do have pitty for  the team that she puts me on.   I hope they remember it is for a good cause!   After reading your blog, maybe there is room on your team for someone like me, sounds like I would fit right in.  I even convinced Judy Griffin today to sign up and play, we may not be able to get a hole in one, and maybe we will hit the ball sometimes, but I bet we have lots of fun and a great  day.  Like you said it is for a great cause, that's why I am a member of the ROC committee, for 3 years now and love it.   It makes you feel wonderful at the end of the year when you are present and the checks are given out to the local charties and you know that you had a part in getting all the donations together.   So come on, fellow Realtor members, get out your checkbooks or just make a call to ECAR and ask them to sign you up and come on out on the 19th and join in on the fun.

Let's make it the BEST GOLF TOURNAMENT YET..............Penny Ericksen.

Geoff..

Thanks for your support and as always, uplifting words.  The Golf Tournaments is such a tradition at ECAR and such a good cause.  We all have to have perspective that we can help someone, even if it is in a small way.

On the other hand, I would like to address Richard and his concerns.  Because you have been involved with ECAR, I am sure you know where everyone's heart is.  The ROC committee reaches out to our community to help those in need.  The leadership does listen to the membership when the members speak.  Are you speaking for the majority of ECAR membership or for the few Realtors that do not take the opportunity of Education at the Association?  There are many free opportunities to network or go to classes and share ideas with other agents.  The market is what it is and we have to be proactive.  I know many Realtors that will make it through this market adjustment and are doing just fine now.  If leadership can help someone you know, let us know and we will address that.  If you would like, I can share some ideas over coffee or lunch with you, I'll buy..  Have a great day and encourage people to support ROC, just like we did Katrina a few years a go..

Geoff:

I am sorry you had to witness Sam and I at our most stressed!  Ha! Ha!  Thank you for such a humorous version of our golf tournament planning.  It often helps to relieve tension when one can laugh at oneself!  We appreciate your support.

Richard, I am sorry that you feel so negative about our event as doing things for ROC this past year has certainly benefited me as I turned the focus off of my own concerns and turned it to someone else's needs.  It has caused me to realize that no matter how difficult this past year has been for all of us in real estate, there are so many others that have it much worse and I feel grateful for the blessings in my life.  When you realize how many people are in such need you often find that your own worries are miniscule compared to theirs.  I enjoy that wonderful feeling I get when I know that I have in some way assisted someone else in need as I am sure you recall during all your efforts for the Katrina victims.  It is far better to give than to receive, isn't it?

I hope the rest of our association will come and find that wonderful feeling of helping by supporting our charitable event.  If you could see the faces of the charity representatives when we give them their funds, you would realize why I find myself blessed to be a part of our Realtor Outreach Committee.
